Girls auteur Lena Dunham has injected some much-needed levity into this election with her ad supporting President Barack Obama, in which she describes losing her voting virginity.
“My first time voting as amazing. It was this line in the sand – before I was a girl, now I was a woman.”
She also encourages first time voters to find the right guy to pop that proverbial cherry.
“You don’t want a guy who says, ‘Oh hey, I’m at the library studying,’ when really he’s out not signing the Lilly Ledbetter act. Or thinks that gay people should never have beautiful, complicated weddings like the kind we see on Bravo or TLC all the time.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Unsurprisingly, the ad has already drummed up some controversy. The New York Daily News reports:
[One] of the many sick things about this degrading Lena Dunham ‘lose your virginity to Barack’ ad? The Left thinks it’s ‘empowering’ to women,” wrote conservative commentator Monica Crowley.
“How could a president with two young, blossoming daughters release an ad as disgusting as this,” asked John Nolte of the conservative Breitbart News site.
“Apparently Obama sees young women as helpless & sex-obsessed,” he added.
And apparently Romney sees them as slips of paper in a binder. Men are pigs. Lena Dunham’s awesome. When is Girls coming back?
