After watching out actor Stephen Fry’s documentary (which premiered in the U.K. October 14) about homosexuality and homophobia across the globe, fellow Brit John Bird began to wonder about the perennial question that every gay man asks himself at one time: Who the hell would choose to be gay?
Taking a cue from the phrase frequently used by the late activist-politician Harvey Milk at the beginning of many speeches, “I want to recruit you,” Bird tries to get to the bottom of the absurd yet eternal argument that men can be turned gay and notes that he never met another gay person until after he was an adult but felt attraction to other boys during childhood. So who recruited him?

The best statement, IMO, that was ever made regarding this issue was by the late Frank Kameny. He said, “I wasn’t recruited. I enlisted.”

I hate it when people phrase it that way. “Who would choose to be gay?!” – I get what they’re going for but it makes us look like tormented souls who aren’t happy being gay. If I had a choice in the matter, I’d choose to be gay again and again and again. All the people who hate gay people and discriminate against them wouldn’t dissuade me from that, I’m happy to offend them.

@Pistolo: Right on! Being gay is a gift — like having an unusual athletic or musical talent. It’s made my life more challenging in some ways, but also infinitely richer.

@Pistolo: Very well said. At this point in my life, I would absolutely choose to be gay as well. I am very happy with and proud of who I am. If someone is offended by it then so be it. It is still my life, and I will live it my way!

Life is uncertainty. Do you honestly think that straight people have it so much easier? Hah! As long as people exist, others will find a way to judge them. No matter who you are, people will judge you because of it. No matter who you are you will have doubts and fears. No matter who you are you will know pain and suffering as well hope and joy. Being gay has NOTHING to do with it underneath the surface. It is about being human.

@Pistolo: Right – I never really understood that kind of thinking either. When I figured out I was gay, sure I had SOME anxiety about it, but in other ways I was relieved. And that was before taking any action on the knowledge.
For one thing, television sitcom propaganda (’60s & ’70s) had taught me that “women don’t like sex very much,” so I figured at least I’d be getting some sex if I was gay!
