The cheeky Orthodox Calendar is back with more unorthodox behavior. The 2014 edition pays tribute to gay marriage while combining two of our favorite things: hot dudes in calendars and religious blasphemy.
However, according to the Orthodox Calendar’s mission statement — and the disclaimer before the above video — these alleged sexy priests (they’re allegedly priests…but definitely sexy) are meant as a commentary on gay men in religious orders as well as the corruption inherent in the Orthodox Church:
The primary goal was to demonstrate that Orthodox believers do not all fit the backward, hidebound stereotype portrayed in the press but rather are regular people with passions, preferences, interests and desires. At the same time, the calendar takes an ironic approach to the Orthodox Church itself, which in recent years has been embroiled in corruption scandals, artist repression, gay sex cover-ups, outrageous behavior and homophobia.

I appreciate a good taboo as much as the next guy but I just don’t get this. If the message is supposed to encourage the Orthodox Church toward a more LGBTQ-friendly mindset I don’t think you’re going to achieve this by portraying clergy in such a manner.
Seems more like they wanted to put out something ‘edgy’.

Sorry to disappoint you but as an Orthodox Christian I wasn’t upset — even though I’m a gay man and Orthodox. Next time guys do your research. This calendar should be re-marketed. The priests have no beards, the make the sign of the Cross like a Roman Catholic, it looks like a “priest” is baptizing someone CATHOLIC style, there are no indications what-so-ever of anything ORTHODOX in it, and there are women in it. WTF ?
Besides all the hype, the connection to Pussy Riot is ridiculous. There protest was nominally religious and out-right political Its the wrong way to change people’s perceptions of the LGBT community in Russia or other oppressive countries. You end up doing more damage if you ask me. Russia has a huge Gay underground that includes clergy and politicians.
