I disagree, though I would say that there is only a “black community” to the extent that said community resists racism. I would say the same thing about the “Irish-American” community, the “Italian American” community, the “Arab American” community etc.

And nowadays, yes, there is a discernable “gay community” to the extent that of said community’s resistance to homophobia.

Okay, I just skimmed this…not a whole lot addressing what I wrote.

You do realize gay people existed during the time when blacks in America had no rights…right? You do realize there were closeted gay American citizens during this time period who contributed to taking away the rights of black Americans who were living in this country both during and after slavery…right? So yes anyone with a brain can say gays contributed to the stripping of rights of black people.

I’m so sick of this faceless “gay community” argument. Considering the fact that anyone of any race can be gay and considering the fact that a vast majority of gay people worldwide are not a part of the “gay community” there’s no reason to toss it around. The only people in the “gay community” are the unified few who actively create said community. The rest of us are not in said community just because we’re gay.

The same can be said about every other “community” argument. There is no “white community”, “black community”, etc, etc.

My skin is light brown, I’m not a part of any “black community”, I’ve never attended a “black community” meeting, and I’ve never voted on any “black community” issues.

I’m American and that’s about the only community I’m a part of because I’m surrounded by other Americans daily.

I would even go further and say that I could never see gay people voting like that on black people’s rights EVEN IF THEY HAD THE POWER TO DO SO.

The important thing is they were all straight people (other than the 4% of gays who voted yes on Prop 8 in California, wtf!). And, for the most part, there is no shame that straight people have at their homobigotry.

Well, we certainly can’t lay the blame on the black community for the passage of prop 8 in california, but we can say that they contributed just like the whites and hispanics who voted. In that regard, it has the power (along with white homophobia) to rob me (qua gay) of potential rights. I don’t live in CA (thank god…not cali people…like what woody allen had to say about them), and even if it were legalized nationwide, would never consider the option for myself; but that it should be an option is the point. We can’t say the same about the gay community’s power to contribute to stripping black people qua black people of their rights.

I’ve always been an independent. I usually vote dem, yes, but not always.

Mind you, I ask the same questions to black people. What power does the gay community have over you? Neither community has much power, really, in the scheme of things.

Absolutely. Those are great cases for homophobia in the religious community and amongst whites.

But, there is a higher degree of homophobia amongst black democrats than non-black democrats, and I think it’s because of an increase in religiosity, which also maintain sexist gender norms. I also think that it indicates that there’s a higher level of homophobia in the black community than in the non-black community–on average. There are groups that tie and exceed the black community per capita, too (white christian evangelicals, for example). But it’s a pretty significant problem, and one that can’t just be explained as no better nor worse than homophobia in any other demographic.

And that is where their method of exorcisms and the type I grew up with conflict, and this in itself is a problem for us. You see, my mother would believe that the moment that guy stops shaking the demon will be straight back inside him and he’ll still be feeling teh gayness (which, rather obviously, will be the case). My mother would say that to properly exorcise him you need to end the demon’s right to occupy the guy’s soul, and that the histrionics are caused by the demon fighting to stay where it has a right to be, so if the demon’s right to be there was taken away before it was cast out it would go quietly. So she’d take his continued gayness as confirmation that she’s right and the wingnuts in the video are wrong – because in her eyes the exorcism wasn’t done properly.

To be fair though, the method of exorcism my mother uses is as radically different from the one in those videos as chalk from cheese and can actually be very useful in most situations. It’s a lot more like a guided meditation, and very similar to Quaker mediation, so it is highly effective at dealing with deep-rooted personal problems like alcoholism. My only issue is (for obvious reasons) the use of it to try to “cure” queerness, though to date my mother has never had any success there. I mean, look at me – I’m still bent as a nine bob note!
