Well, as one of those fanfic slash writers (though lesbian not straight), I can tell you that, from what I've seen and experienced, women (straight, bi, lesbian, queer) can and do come up with super-hot or incredibly sweet/romantic stories and art.
Why? Because everyone has fantasies and ideas and the internets offer a relatively "safe" medium in which to express said things. There are many female slashers (that is, women who like/love/are turned on by m/m pairings) who have no other outlet. Even now in the 21st Century (sad but true).
Odd. Two of the Minutemen (precursors to the Watchmen) were gay, iirc. Why didn't she do them?
