We’ll Be Back

Arnie

The Terminator announced yesterday that he would in fact veto California’s bill legalizing same-sex marriage. Citing the voter passed Proposition 22 that states “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” Claiming that he would veto “out of respect for the will of the people,” Schwarzenegger obviously forgot about the civil rights of those very “people.”

There is a light however at the end of the tunnel. Coming up is a 2006 election in which Mr. Terminator will most likely seek reelection. By pandering to the state’s Christian right he has taken the risk of alienating those swing California voters, many gay, who elected him into office believing in his ability to rise above partisan politics. Now he looks like every other Republican even if he claims to not care “one way or the other.”

Oh, but we do care Arnie. And don’t worry. We’ll be back.
