Mike Huckabee is claiming those terrible comments he made to a college newspaper about gay marriage — that it’s a “behavioral pattern,” like drug using, that shouldn’t be tolerated — were taken out of context. Except the student reporter recorded the whole thing. Oops!
In an interview published April 9, Huckabee spoke about gay marriage in this way: “You don’t go ahead and accommodate every behavioral pattern that is against the ideal. That would be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs, so let’s go ahead and accommodate those who want who use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, so we should accommodate them.”
He spoke about gays adopting in this way: “I think this is not about trying to create statements for people who want to change the basic fundamental definitions of family. And always we should act in the best interest of the children, not in the seeming interest of the adults. Children are not puppies. This is not a time to see if we can experiment and find out, how does this work?”
But now Michael Tracey, editor of the College Of New Jersey’s newspaper The Perspective, has suddenly become Huckabee’s Enemy No. 1, with claims of the paper taking Huckabee’s remarks out of context.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
In a statement, the former governor and potential GOP presidential candidate says:
The young college student hopefully will find a career other than journalism. I would ask that he release the unedited tape of our conversation. I believe that what people do as individuals in their private lives is their business, but I do not believe we should change the traditional definition of marriage. Not only did he attempt to sensationalize my well known and hardly unusual views of same-sex marriage, he also inaccurately reported my views on Michael Steele as GOP chairman – I offered my support and didn’t “Rip into Steele” as his article asserted. I had a candid and frank conversation with the group about health care, education, the economy and national security while the young journalism student, instead, chose to focus on the issue of same-sex marriage and grossly distort my views.
The newspaper responded in kind:
It is telling that nowhere in his statement did Huckabee suggest he was misquoted in the article, and rightfully so; we have the audio and transcripts to prove that everything reported is accurate.
Huckabee’s problem seems to lie more in the focus of the article, which is centered partially on LGBT issues. We feel that same-sex marriage, laws prohibiting gays and lesbians from adopting children, and ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell‘ are legitimate policy concerns about which to question national political figures. Gov. Huckabee may disagree.
And released the audio, which is actually more damning than the original published remarks. Among Huckabee’s comments:
You’ll notice Huckabee refuses to say gays and lesbians fall outside of this ideal world, claiming Tracey is putting those words in his mouth. But by grouping these so-called alternative lifestyles into the groups of other terrible behaviors — i.e. drug users — he is tacitly categorizing them together. That isn’t the same thing as taking his words out of context; it is, in fact, putting them in context.
Ahem.

Umm hey Mike when a couple of guys do decide to use each other as sexual toys (or whatever) nobody gets left with the *burden* of a child, last time i checked…
Fuck Mike Huckabee for having the gall to dictate morality to anyone, this guy has pardoned several people on the basis of jailhouse conversions to Christianity who have subsequently raped or murdered other innocent people. He helped to whitewash the charges against his son for animal abuse. I think the worst thing about him is that he spews all of his hate with a warm, ‘ah shucks’ grin on his face and people that aren’t really paying attention think he’s not that bad. grrr….
Kenster999
Huckabee is so right! Gays should stop having casual sex with each other, because of all the kids they accidentally conceive and then fail to raise properly. Gays should have responsible sex, like straight people do.
Daniel
It is ironic that Mike Huckabee says not to accommodate people who believe in incest and polygamy, since he was a Christian preacher before entering politics and Christianity is founded on incest (Jews-Christians-Muslims are all descendents of the incestuous relationship between Lott and his two daughters) as well as polygamy (The biblical Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, to name a few, were all polygamists. The prophet Nathan even told David if he wanted even more wives than the hundreds he already had, that the biblical God would provide them to him.)
So it is pathetically and massively hypocritical for Mike Huckabee to bring up incest and polygamy when he spent a great deal of his own life getting paid to convince people to believe in a religion founded on incest and polygamy. What a hypocrite! He proactively pursued a career where he was paid to push incest and polygamy on people! He could have followed any other religious mythology but decided to pick Christianity as a profession. No wonder all the rightwing religious groups were so silent about his comments.

That guy looks like a big B.M. in a suit.

“You don’t use another person (as) a sexual toy and toss them away, leaving them with the burdens of a child.” Do we need to find a first grader that can explain to him that gays don’t make babies? Holy shit, this guy is fucking stupid.

Schumckabee is one of the most dangerous rightwing loonytoons. He comes off so unassuming as a “ah shucks” kind of guy. Smiling, playing the guitar, just a regular good guy. His show is modeled like a regular talk show, with a band and audience members. ..Yet he embraces and encourages the extreme right agenda at every opportunity…
He is simply Fred Phelps without the inbred family members and hatefull signs………

This ignorant piece of bible thumping white trash would probably blame gays when the Mormon cult introduced polygamy in Utah back in the 19th century. Now, last time I checked, gays couldn’t get married and all polygamists were straight. To date, polygamy is the domain of straights, always has been, always will be. I’d like to ask him for proof that polygamy would re-emerge as a result of same-sex marriage. Its been legal in Holland for almost a decade, there have been no cases of straight polygamy or people marrying animals either. Just what exactly gives this moron the right to use his religious beliefs to promote homophobia by his uninformed, psychopathic statements? Isn’t it remarkable that the majority of these people are republicans with a religious cult upbringing? Psycopathic is an apt word in this context.

He is the worst this country has to offer. He spews his venom with a wink and a polite smile, making him even more dangerous than the obvious crazies like Fred Phelps.
And of course he has his own TV show.

Huckabee was governor of Arkansas, isn’t it funny that he never once, during his campaigns told the enormous numbers of single mothers in his state that they were irrisponsible for the way their children were conceived. Hmm, funny how he forgot to do that.

Huckabee is an irresponsible liar and a shockingly stupid man.

“Children are not puppies” Unfortunately many of the children adopted by Gay Parents have been treated much worse than a dog.
Many of them are cycled thru the foster system time and time again and abused at every turn, subjected to physical and sexual abuse. Much better to let them waste away than be accepted and nutured into a loving home with Gay Parents who are willing to put up with years of nightmares trying to prove to a kid that they are deserving of love, and they are not simply a hole for some pig to violate. to give them a future………..This man is simply a hate tossing demon…..

That’s right gays, you have no business thinking you can raise children in the healthy way the Huckabees did.

There should be a ban on religious cult ministers entering politics, period. Its obvious they’re going to use their religious bigotry to promote their agenda, so much for separation of cult and state. We like to pretend we live in a country free of a state cult. Well, we’re not when these bastards are allowed to run roughshod over us and get a say in who gets what rights and who does not. Now lets see if any democrats go after Huckabee, we all know Obama won’t because he doesn’t want to upset his religious bigoted base or offend Rick Warren and others. He’s not much better than they are.

Funny that Huckabee should mention ‘Children are not puppies’, since his son David was fired from a job at a summer camp for hanging a stray dog. He then had a Arkansas State Police officer fired for not helping to cover it up. Class act fat ass.

Would my partner be considered my “sexual toy?” We have been together for 20 years now and I haven’t “tossed him out” yet? BUT..there is a woman who I work with who is on marriage number 3 since we have been together. Oh..she must live in a “perfect world!” Right?
People like Huck are the reason why my partner and I cannot get married here in Ohio and many other states. I really hope that when we die there is reincarnation and he ends up gay growing up in the bible belt. He needs to experience his own homophobia.

Side note, The View on ABC and those blabbering woman on it ESPECIALLY the worst homophobic offender on t.v the idiot known as Sherry Shepard completely fawned over this man recently, said he would make a great president and would support him in office as he has integrity and isn’t willing to sacrifice his values. If you get a moment to email that BIGOTED show, please do so and boycott it best you can.
This man is a living HITLER. Hitler looks soft compared to Huckabee who’s son hung a stray dog up a tree and shot it, threw bricks at it, and made it die a slow painful death. That’s how sickening him and his family is.
This is the most evil man to ever live. Period.

@Kyle: For me Whoopie and Joy more than make up for the ignorance of the rest. Sherry Shepard is a ditz and very shallow on intellect, her and the Palin asskisser Hasselbeck are just there to provide a sort of counterbalance for the perceived liberalism of the show.

why don’t people ever bring up the fact that by all credible observation, gay people are inherently gay, have no attraction to the opposite sex to begin with, and can’t be molded to be attracted to the opposite sex? This isn’t just some crazy P-flag notion written by drag queens—its the official policy of the ADA. No one is born with an inherent attraction to heroine or cocaine. Drug users aren’t a social class.

Well, that’s interesting. You chastise Mike Huckabee for “having the gall to dictate morality to anyone,” and then IMMEDIATELY criticize him based on his moral viewpoints.
“Fuck Mike Huckabee for having the gall to dictate morality to anyone. Now, let me proceed to dictate to everyone some of the morally wrong things that he has done.”
Way to go.
reason
A few of the topics he touched on were meritorious including the parts about having children and the need for those individuals to take responsibility, that failure to take responsibility is something that severely dampens the greatness and possibility of Americans; a neglected kid more often than not grows up to be a negligent adult that never reaches their true potential. The part about sexual toys is geared to straight people made obvious by the consequence he is talking about, but I believe a part of that is applicable to the gay community which I will not probe in this topic because it deserves a topic of its own.
Then there is the unmeritorious part, he amalgamates truth with statements that don’t hold water; his introspection that it is up to the gay community to prove that we should change 5000 years of recorded history on marriage is false, here in the United States we are not bound by 5000 years of recorded history, were bound to the constitution. The question that needs to be asked is if Huckabee is trouncing on are constitutionally granted liberty. If he wants to wax nostalgic about history he should read the Declaration of Independents, which has been described as the “philosophical backbone of our government,” that includes the brilliant phrase “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” The Declaration of Independents lays out the reasoning behind the revolution and the ideals the fledging American government was to be built on. Why is Huckabee so un-American?
I also take issue with his remarks about the military, he doesn’t know to many active duty soldiers who are supporting the repeal, then he starts talking about social experiments. The questions I have is does Huckabee think desegregating the military was a social experiment? If not why is he taking talking points from that point in history? For a past presidential candidate his statements seem to be peppered with overused talking points engineered at foxnews.
For good measure he did some good political maneuvering by turning the time spent on DADT into time taken away from veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the war, something that in truth is debilitating. Huckabee is a slick political operator, but apparently not slick enough to realize that his conversation was being recorded.
Robert, NYC
No 24, Kyle, I agree. What pissed me off even more was that Whoopie even said that Mike Huckabee is a “nice guy”. She’s that naive to think that Fuckabee wasn’t implying that allowing same-sex marriage would herald the re-emergence of polygamy, incest and drug abuse? Really? The thing that enrages me with The View is that they NEVER have an authority representing our side be it ex-gays, marriage equality or DADT. They always allow those wind bags like Huckabee, O’Reilly and others a say but they never have anyone from our side pushing back and refuting their absurd statements. Walters is an asshole and a media whore. She should know better. Her show is hardly balanced even with Hasselbitch on the team. I wish they’d get rid of her and that ignoramus Shepard, they contribute nothing but stupidity, the essence of airheadedness if you ask me. I’d like to see that show taken off the air, once and for all.

All of you who listened to the video are basically hearing what you want to hear, even if this video was unedited. Huckabee’s views on the LGBT community are not any more radical or sensational than the rest of Americans that do not support the lgbt agenda.
Did Huckabee say that homosexuals are the equivalent of drug users? No. He made the comparison because of the similarity of how each group would go about attaining what they want legally, and how opening the door to one is opening the door to the other.
Did he insinuate that homosexuals can procreate? No, although I can see how someone chomping at the bit to bore a hole in him would hear that. Huckabee clearly transitions from talking about homosexuals in the bit before this, shifting to the importance of a man and a woman both having a role in the raising of a child. He even states later in the interview “Two women cannot produce a child.”
The journalist does a pretty decent job in the interview, letting Huckabee get his opinion out, it’s the reactions here that are disturbing. If you disagree with those people who don’t agree about LGBT issues, fine, but Huckabee is not changing the game here or adding any fodder to the debate. Rip into him, fine, but you have enough fuel to your fire by comprehending what his position actually is.

Unless a same-sex couple use surrogacy or invitro fertilization as do many straight couples, then yes, they can procreate but not in the conventional manner of course.
Yes there is importance in a man and a woman raising a child, but I don’t hear anything from these right wing demagogues in regard to straight widows and widowers alike left to raise children and who do not remarry. Its clear Huckabee is a bigot just like the rest of them because they ignore or dismiss it just because either parent isn’t gay. Nor does he castigate single women who give up their children for adoption. In fact, NONE of the religious cults that I know of have ever publicly denigrated or dehumanized a single straight parent because of their widowed status with children. They can’t have it their way, the religious way, because there is indeed more than one way to raise a child and some single parents have done a fantastic job doing it.
