The Latino half of my family wasn’t as Gabe describes, thank god, until we inherited my late grandfather’s second wife and her family when I was about twenty. They’re all nice enough but very family-family, all in regular contact with their HUGE extended family, many of them living within blocks of each other. They’re loud, shrill, constantly talking, everyone in each other’s business. Luckily they live across the country and I’ve only had to interact with them once in the last decade.
It’s that side of the family that behaves as Gabe describes. I can brush off the nosy inquiries as an annoyance but the larger picture of everyone in each other’s pockets and all the noise drives me UP. THE. WALL.

From what my parents report, I’m regarded as an oddity. I don’t live near my parents and care zilch about family; home ownership and many children are not my ultimate life’s goals; I have a white collar job; I have a passport; I got married: “late”, to a guy, to an “old” white guy, to an artist, when I got married it wasn’t a blow out 500+ guest thing. They’re shocked I don’t spend every holiday and three day weekend at my parents’ house (yeah, this Christmas-New Year’s I can spend a week in the house where I grew up or my husband and I can go to South America for a month).
Because I don’t speak with them I don’t get the whole ‘you must go clubbing every night and wear a glittered halter top’ thing but I imagine those questions are there.
And Shakira is awful. Ever since that first song where it sounds like she’s being strangled while trying to yodle for help…

I think another part of my equation with this topic is not having a Catholic upbringing. Dad and his family are lapsed Catholics, i.e., raised going to church, etc. and then as adults they all stopped. Weddings and funerals might still take place in the church but otherwise, not even at Easter.
