What's Worse for Queen Latifah: Outed As Gay, Or Outed for Loving Strippers?

latifahnatlenq

Queen Latifah is not even a "secret" lesbian these days. Aside from opting not to acknowledge her sexuality to the press, she's about as out as she can be. Or at least she is after these photos, published this week bythe (surprisingly accurate) National Enquirer, reveal the actress-singer and her "galpals" enjoy getting together at private homes to drink enjoy the company of strippers.

When it comes to being gay, Latifah has never opened up, telling reporters only that she doesn't think someone's sexuality is worthy of public scrutiny. But aside from constant industry rumor-mongering, there was the lawsuit from former employees and gay club sightings to confirm things.

And now, the type of publicity nobody really wants: getting photographed with strippers. Being gay aside, this is not good for Latifah's image. She's a CoverGirl and, off-screen, manicures a wholesome image. Paying naked strippers to show up at your house, as the Enquirer claims, is not good for cosmetics contracts. Unless you're Johnny Knoxville, a reputation as a stripper enthusiast is bad for business; Michael Phelps learned that already.

If the story gains traction — which it may not, because less shady entertainment media outlets usually leave closeted gay celebs alone — the best defense for Latifah, then, will actually be to come out … as someone in a committed, long-term relationship with Jeannette Jenkins.

I like Latifah. I think she's done well for herself. I also think she can handle whatever comes her way with dignity and an ass-whupping.

She'll use the same lines that clay Aiken used. "Oh, you can never believe tabloids". It;s a shame, I really think that her coming out would be a very good thing. I used to think she was close to coming out when she was younger. She played a lesbian in the movie "Set It Off" and she was fantastic in the role!

does anyone really care about Q. Latifah? Maybe in the black community but even then, is being a lesbian and hiring strippers that offensive?

Maybe the Queen should do a remake of this song. ;)

I had a girlfriend (sexmate) of and on who was definitely very hetero- but who found it entertaining now and themn to go to a stripper club_ the women were pretty awefull. But she liked to see them twirl their tits in opposte directions at the same time etc.
I've been around a lot of dykes and I have always thought that Latifa was a bull dyke. , I can't figure out anyone doubting it.

So G/D what is about all I can say. She was no doubt set up by someone she probable told "it is time to go get a job and support yourself".

Gay or not I love her and shit like this makes me love her even more.

I love that Queen Latifah is having the time of her life. This news I already knew. She's an amazing talent.

She's in rap. That requires a badass reputation, not a respectable one. Even in movies she normally plays a streetwise, tough woman. It would only be a really big deal careerwise if she was a guy rapper being outed and shown with male strippers.

The Enquirer isn't trusted as a credible source either, like others have pointed out. People will shrug this off like the nutty stories about Oprah and Michelle fighting over Barack's love.

She's even typecast as a lesbian. See: Set it Off, Chicago…

I don't think this qualifies as an outing. She's even more glass closet than Jodie was.

Why are people so hellbent on 'exposing' her or trying to make her publicly come out?

No. 17 · WTF?

I don't think that proves anything. I've got plenty of female friends who are heterosexual and do things like: make out, get lap dances, and generally act like "lezzies". I don't even think you could call her gay if she reared up with glazed donut face between the legs of some chick. That's how straight girls seem to roll. They're all one cosmo too many away from bi.

VCWLTF, these (excuse the pun) bi-weekly papers always date the papers ahead due to supermarket shelf life.

@VCWLTF: That newspaper is also owned by non-other than Mr. A-Hole himself, Arnold Swartzanazi.

I have no respect at all for it. For 8 years there was next to NOTHING printed about our ex-knuckleheaded president, Bush, because Arnold thought he was popular (vain) enough to have the laws changed so that he could run for president.

It was Enron that helped elect this drug user (steroids) into office and I applaud every time disaster strikes that he can do nothing about. What a loser.

You go, Queen Latifah. I love you always.,

She could probably stop the damage to her (nonexistent) career by coming out and just ending this nonsense of not talking about. Just come out, give a few interviews about it and get on with her life.

"does anyone really care about Q. Latifah? Maybe in the black community but …"

@ scott ny'er

I am sure you meant no harm but your implication seems to be that black people and their opinions don't really matter. This is a fairly disgusting premise in itself which also runs counter to the thesis Queerty defends on almost a daily basis which is that the hearts and minds of POC are an integral part of the battle for gay rights in this country.

@ Giovanni
I took what Scott ny'er said in a totally different way, for me it was like when you correct yourself while speaking like: I don't like ice cream, maybe pistacho but that's it…. "does anyone really care about Q. Latifah? Maybe in the black community [...]" <– pretty harmless. But maybe not, I don't want to put words in other people's mouths :)

Anyway, what I really wanna say is that I like QL very much regardless of who she likes to sleep with. It's true that her career is pretty ambiguous and kinda weak and so any news regarding her are like "meh" for me. Whatever.

First of all

So what! It's nobodies business if she is gay or not! Straight people enjoy same sex strippers just as much as gay people! A woman enjoying female strippers does not automatically make her "lesbian."

Second of all

"CoverGirls" Get they freak on too!

Third of all

Who ever hated on Queen by putting out the photo is just mad they can't afford nobody to show up naked at they house.

@Giovanni: @Aminah: Carmen got me exactly. But, I'll note what you felt Giovanni and try to think more carefully about what/how I write things. But never intended that. I feel you took it entirely in the wrong way.

Also, I'm not quite sure Queerty is so pro-POC gay like as much as you think they are.

Straight guys go to drag shows all ttime.. Does that make them transvestites? This is silly!

What the fuck would a straight male want to go to a drag show for? That muthafucka is gay and don't want to admit it.
