What’s Your Excuse for Being on Queerty This Christmas?

xmasstockings

Hey, you there? What are you doing on the world wide web on such an important religious — or, according to other religions, pagan — holiday? Well so long as you’re here, you might as well talk amongst yourselves. Tell Queerty: How are you spending Christmas? Are you with family, friends, partners? Is this Christmas better than last year? What did you get — and give — this holiday season? And most importantly: Were you good or naughty this year? Honest answers only!

Or instead, you can debate whether or not Rudolph is a big ‘mo.

Personally, I’m not a member of any of the world’s cults, so today is a day like any other.

Last night went to the coast to see grandparents, then had Christmas w/ Dad & stepmom. Just finished cleaning up after breakfast with mom, stepdad and sister. Off to work out and shower before family gets here. Had to take an internet break, but nothing new on Facebook and no new grades posted.

Got camera, ipod, cross-country skiis, Portland, OR sweater, foot massager, and my ring repaired. Oh- and a book of Oscar Wilde’s works from my sister.

So mundane and yet so fabulous.

Oh yeah, and I gave fancy gloves to mom and fancy scarf to s-dad. Pedicure stuff to S-mom.

And I bought my dad a nose trimmer and sweater vest… literally what he asked for. At least he stopped trying to dye his hair back from gray.

Visiting my bf’s brother in Ohio. Woke up around 8, opened presents with the nieces. Ran out the the Catholic Church with sis-in-law and have been playing games on the girls’ new Wii. There is only so much gaming I could do so I am back to my RSS feeds.

I’m Jewish and my boyfriend is Orthodox Christian, so I won’t be celebrating for another 13 days.

Woke up at 8 this morning only to find that our dog opened, i.e., ripped through several presents … wrapper and ribbon all over the place … god only knows what could have happened had I gotten up 1/2 hour later. Went to midnight mass last night and received a new watch from partner. Happy Holidays all ;-)

my partner and I opened gifts last night, then got up early this morning and he made posole while i chopped a weeks worth of firewood. We spent the afternoon xc skiing for about 3 hours, then came home to a nice dinner and a rented movie. We are not religious, but we certainly share in the spirit of peace and love of the season!

I’m in Kentucky this Christmas (Ech), and we opened presents today as a family. As per usual, the only mention even made of my ‘lifestyle’ was done in a stereotypical way (when one of my nieces got a Twilight bedspread, there were some throwaway comments in my direction about how ‘fabulous’ I must think it is, done, naturally, in the most flamey voice possible – I am not fey. There’s nothing wrong with flamers, I love them, it’s totally what I want in a partner. But when they direct those kinds of comments at me in that way, they’re making fun of me). It really makes me not look forward to family every year.

Yet here I am, and I’m trying to squeeze as much enjoyment out of the holiday as possible – if not with family, then with the ‘spirit’ of the holy days. :)

I got the Steve Madden shoes that I specifically asked for, a French cookbook, and a cooking lesson, and all sorts of crap like 11 chocolate bars which I gave most away. I spent a lot of time with family, and got to see my nephew which was the highlight of my day.

I went to the shelter in Palm Springs that feed the homeless. I donate money to buy groceries. Sorry to say, the homeless charity is losing their lease. No neighborhood wants them because they are afraid of break-ins. Desperate times.

Well, I’m here now because my email has been flaky lately and just came back; I’m going through mail and RSS feeds. Last night: went to my brother’s church two hours away for the 10-12PM music and service, then to his house with Mom and his girlfriend for oyster stew and to bed. (I don’t know how that got started, but we’ve done it every year for a while.) Today: to aunt and uncle’s house for dinner and an afternoon of visiting with them and the cousins, then to Dad and Stepmom’s for supper.

Bored. At parents. Too many kids, too much noise. Enjoying silence. Contemplating how to work off the 10,000 calories I’ve consumed the last 36 hours.

My partner had an important job interview on the 23rd in Sherman Oaks, CA. So we drove down from Apple Valley, CA on the 22nd and stayed at a hotel with our dog, Maxx. We ate at Sisley Italian Kitchen on Ventura blvd that evening, and the next day, he had a nice chat with the 2 search-chair ladies at the Starbucks (of all places) for his potential job.
Then we came home and did nothing for his birthday which is the 24th. My hubby is nicknamed Eve because of this. hehehe.

So the 25th, Xmas is today. My partner goes off to the Episcopal church to celebrate. I stay home, check out the internet and walk the pooch. After husband returns from worship, we leave the house and eat at a greasy spoon place. I had a grilled chicken sandwich with onion rings and he consumed a chili cheese burger. We both drank bloodies! slurp.
Tomorrow the fun begins. We’ve already packed our bags and I’d love to report that we are meeting up with Marc Jacobs and his “fiance” in St Barths. However we are flying to Greenville, SC and visiting both of our families. They are very supportive of us and love us both immensely, as we do them, so it will be a good time in the Red South. Happy Holidays!

Santa gave me the bird when I asked him for a Christmas goose :\

This morning I opened the package that Mom & Dad mailed last week, which contained two pairs of woolly socks, two tins of cookies, a small bag of chocolates, a box of chamomile tea(?), and a gift card to Target. That was followed by a phone call to them, thanking them for the gifts, and extending my best wishes to the rest of the family, regretfully whom I would not be seeing for Christmas in Maine this year, due, unfortunately, to extenuating circumstances.

What I failed to mention to Mom was that it was mainly due to my reluctance of having a repeat of the last several Thanksgivings and Christmases, where dinnertime conversation covered such lively and engaging topics as “Why do you look so thin all the time, are you depressed?” and “Why are you single? That’s not healthy, you know, to be alone like that.” and “Really, you like your job? You should have become a teacher.”

After the remnants of lingering guilt had past, I joined a group of my like-minded friends, who prefer to spend the holidays together than with their own families, at a hotel downtown that does a truly impressive and somewhat Christmas brunch-lunch-dinner buffet. We royally pigged out and then waddled our satiated selves over to one of their houses for a few hours of wine, cookies, and Wii Sports Resort.

All in all, one of the better Christmases I’ve had in recent memory.

@ no. 20 Lance — Xmas with friends is the best. As gay men we learn the families we build are as, if not more important than our blood ones.

And since I’m about as religious as a crack-pipe, I would love to have gone off to some exotic locale and spent the big day fondling hunky natives, but my starving artist bank account protested.

Maybe next year. :-(

Also not a member of any of the big dude in the sky cults. I do sortof celebrate the passing of the solstice since the days start to get longer and I start anticipating getting the garden together for next year. Also enjoy getting so many days off in a row vicariously. Glad the 25th is over though because today I have to set up the hotel and flight schedules for a mid-january trip to the Keys for diving. Yaaaa.

The religious right has driven the Christmas spirit from us so no tree or decorations this year or any year for that matter.

We used to spend the holidays with our friends and family, now living at the end of the earth it’s just the two of us on this Caribbean French island, the bi-national exiled couple we are. Of coarse EVERYTHING is closed until Monday, even the gym, the beach is open as usual but it is cloudy and rainy here, not good beach weather.

Hubby working today and tomorrow so here I am commenting on Queerty.

Happy Holidays to all you Queerty readers, let’s hope this time next year we have equal rights.

Very traditional/conventional but enjoyable holiday for us: Christmas Eve our daughters and I went off to Midnight Mass at Episcopal Church nearby while my hubby held down fort at home, then home to open one present each. Xmas morning big present-opening scene; Sam and I got each other “Nuke” readers that haven’t arrived yet :-( , but we’re still excited about them. Big Christmas dinner with catered food from local market. Today, off to lunch then movies (Avatar in 3D—yay!), then girls off to visit their mom and other step-dad (these girls are well-supplied in fathers and father-figures!).

I spent Christmas with my family and girlfriend. We stayed at my sister’s for the Eve, baking cookies, watching specials, stirring the excitement in the kids’ minds. My girlfriend and I woke up early to watch my nephews open their Santa presents stacked on the couch and then ate a fabulous family breakfast just to start opening the presents under the tree.

Next, my girlfriend’s dad’s house. We missed most of the morning activities, so we drank and watched Superbad on blu-ray. We spent the day after Christmas at my girlfriend’s grandmother’s house on the lake: a full house both of people and love!

All in all, I received some gift cards, TV seasons (Dexter, Weeds, Roswell, My Name is Earl, Dollhouse, Fringe) and a buttload of candy via stocking.
