April Murdoch, a trans New Jersey woman, is suing both her landlord and employer after, she claims in her lawsuit, each egregiously harassed her. It began, her attorneys say, when her landlord entered her apartment without permission and found documents related to her gender reassignment, verbally assaulted her with anti-queer slurs, kicked her out, and then told her employer about it — who promptly began tormenting her at work and forced her to work overtime without pay before ultimately firing her.

Sounds like when her lawyer gets done with them, she’ll either own the whole apartment building or have the proceeds from its sale.

@B: B, I would like to believe that but, in fact, it’s very difficult to prove discrimination in court even when it seems to be staring you in the face. There have been very few cases of blatant discrimination against trans people which have resulted in any sort of big monetary settlement. One of the few I know of was the late 90s settlement with trans teacher high school Dana Rivers in California where she got a couple of years salary after being fired. New Jersey has good anti-discrimination laws for trans people but they really haven’t been tested, so there isn’t much precedent. I wish April well and hope her attorney’s go for the gold.
