Wonderful speech from a man that does more for gay causes than any gay celeb.

Queerty is pathetic! No wonder Towleroad, After Elton and Boy Culture run circles around you. Guess you are worried that you won’t be getting the web hits you need since all you have left to attack and bully is Latifah and Cooper

For any rational thinking person, he’s come out, MOVE ON!!!

Oh please why did you expect?

And he’s got the awards because he HAS done work for Aids charities…..NPH hasn’t? Do you also know that NPH was straight for a long time into his early 20′s…

Do you also know that the only gay charitable stuff NPH has done is the Trevor Project which every other Hollywood star has done?

Don’t know about O’Hare but not seen his name in much…

Alan Cumming yes. Came out as bisexual with mucho fanfare and does his bit.

Uh huh. And if a celebrity suspected of being a MTF tranny were being hounded and guilt-tripped like this for not disclosing their status and volunteering to be a martyr, you people would call it an irrelevant, transphobic, witch-hunt.

Said Bomer: “And I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

      Read more: http://www.towleroad.com/#ixzz1mHRd5v8U

What part of that doesn’t identify Simons as his partner? And so you think others would have made a better, or at least different speech. And apparently, you would prefer the People cover with “I’m Gay” in a giant font.

But this is how it should be, an actor should be able to refer to his family, without giant pronouncements, without fanfare…it’s just a fact.

Queerty’s constant bullying of gay celebrities that don’t behave exactly as they would like, or say exactly the words they would like to hear, has become exhausting. Of course, any second now we can expect the Dan Avery defenders to jump in and dissect every comment and parse the exact language to try to discredit the commenters. It’s as predictable as Dan Avery’s negativity.

It’s called private life for a reason, gay or straight everyone has the right to choose to disclose as much as he/she wants about his/her own private life. When you do a job interview it’s considered discrimination asking for religion or sexual orientation. The fact someone’s a celebrity doesn’t mean they are not entitled to any privacy or respect. Not everyone is one of the Kardashians who desperately want to live under the spotlight all day long.

      That is a LIE.

Read the NY times article on him. Done 2008 I think. He says he went out with women and didn’t actually know he was gay.

Heck I think that is a lie and he’s making up for bearding but that’s just me. It came out of HIS mouth.

People need to stop recreating NPH’s life as if he’s some great gay hero, when he actually isn’t but to be fair to him, he does constantly say that he thinks that the gay community has a skewed opinion of other gay men in public.

Where do you read he knew he was gay since 7 and didnt beard? I’m going to google.

He is talented and deserves all the best. I wish people would also talk about the award he received for his great work. His speech was nice and moving, he is truly a gentleman.

I am very aware that he dated/slept with women. That was all out of peer pressure and curiosity. He has said on a couple of occasions that he was aware of his gay feelings when he was a young child, I think it might have been his Howard Stern interview. He’s done lots of interviews on this subject.

And publicly, he’s NEVER bearded. He always went to red carpets with friends such as Alyssa Milano. He never said “this is my girlfriend…”

Good for Bomer, I’ve never had a problem with him. My problem was with his fans that come in here and hysterically foam at the mouth claiming that he is out of the closet and brave etc…

His life is his deal, THEM lying and trying to make it out like he was leading the gay pride parade was idiotic.

I’ve been coming to this site for a little around a month and am done. Everything posted by your writers is the mentality/social level of a 14-year old girl. Gossipy, nattering, shallow queens. Truly pathetic.

On top of that, the sheer amount of misspellings, bad punctuation and bad proofreading/editing just drive home the juvenile levels this site sinks to.

I don’t think he’s closeted, but rather is matter-of-fact about it. Not all gay celebrities have to scream it from the rooftops and get interviewed by Barbara Walters. I think he’s just doing what Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper does. Neither confirm or deny, but rather they steer all conversations to their work. There’s nothing wrong with that. I look forward to the day when we can ALL have that attitude because it will be a non-issue.

I’m so sick and tired with people saying “Oh no, it’s his private life, he lives it the way he chooses it” Bullshit. I’ll say this form my perspective, I would have been happy as a kid to have a guy like Bomer, who could make it as a big screen A-list hunk, to be plastered all over magazine covers and not have to read pandering headlines about how he’s such an incredible ladies man and masculine and loves pussy and gay doesn’t exist etc. I’m so tired of this vacuous media propaganda STILL surrounding leading men, and I think it would be awesome if we had strong, sexy, successful men like Bomer be role-models and break those sterile barriers.

As an actor nowadays you have a certain role in the public eye, that’s inevitable, and you can do bad with it, or good. You do have a responsibility. I’m not saying he should go dance on a pole in the middle of Times Square with a fluorescent thong imprinted QUEER HERE, but it would be so wonderful if young people and teens could grow up in a society where there is this transparency, and sexuality isn’t kept in a box on the fireplace of media corporations. Magazines and tv are still extremely heteronormative. How awesome would it be if you could pick up a GQ or any other magazine silently catering to a gay audience as much as a straight one and not have them be hypocrites about the whole deal? This is just a random example, and I’m not saying gay or nay on this guy, but say Jake Gyllenhaal was on the cover of any of those magazines and it said something like “I’m really bad at talking to guys” or “*insert name* is the sweetest boyfriend I ever had”? I’m sorry, but if more male celebrities were just honest about their sexuality, it wouldn’t be such a big deal anymore either, and people wouldn’t get up in arms about it. I understand the writers at Queerty are so frustrated because there is none of this openness right now. I’d agree with Bomers choice to not overtly advertise it if actors and musicians were out in general, but that’s not the case.

Though I came out publicly in my college newspaper over 40 years ago, long ago appeared on PBS and in People magazine in pieces about gays, was photographed and named in 2010 by multiple mainstream media outlets as one of those arrested in a DADT protest at the White House, and have zero tolerance for closeted gays in virutally every other profession, I draw the line at demanding young actors come out. Unlike those other professions, e.g., an attorney, there are VERY few jobs for actors, and I don’t give a flying fuck what the gay Party Line says—NO young actor or actress capable of playing a straight romantic lead is going to get such roles in Hollywood if they’re known to be gay. NAME ME ONE WHO’S DONE IT. And face it, Armchair Activists: it’s not potential food out of YOUR mouth when you’re flapping it about what OTHERS should do.

Sadly so many of us fall into that sad trap. Matt, you are a role model for all and continue living your life on your terms.

Are you suggesting that the only way to come out publicly is to announce your sexuality in a press conference? Or on the cover of People Magazine? Rolling Stone? Time?

Publicly thanking one’s spouse and children seems a very classy way to do the same thing, and it also seems much more focused on love rather than only on sexuality. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?

@Michael Bedwell: Great. Let’s hope nothing ever changes for future actors and actresses so they’ll never have the possibility for a non-closeted life either and are forced to pull a Tom Cruise for the rest of their careers. You call that a better life? And calling out ‘armchair activists’ on something we actually do not have any power over is pretty redundant, methinks.

Yes, the only way to come out properly in this day and age with gay youth feeling so alone they have to kill themselves is to announce it in People magazine. You are gay and you come to a certain status in your career, you now owe it the brave hearts that came before you and after you. I feel any gay who hides is a traitor and somewhat evil (if you indeed describe evil as hurting others in some way to advance yourself in some way) I am not being facetious. I am completely serious.

How dare the rest of you argue otherwise. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Ah the ever-present leftist whiners, desperately seeking validation by forcing actors to come out and destroy their careers so they can play role model for some kid in Bumfuck, Iowa who they’ll never meet.

Coming out in Hollywood is like a death sentence for your professional life.

No, Neil Patrick Harris doesn’t count. He got that role on How I Met Your Mother before he came out, and it’s really more of a caricature than an actual character. Once that show is done, what does he have? A never ending stream of award show hosting gigs? A three minute cameo in Harold and Kumar Go To Easter Brunch? Total A-list material there.

      Oh, ok.

Pretty sure everyone at this point knows he’s gay. Why not allow his career to get to a point where no one will care and he can better advocate for us than try to force him out now and ruin it?

The people who care know he’s gay because he’s already been outed across the internet. The people who just watch his roles don’t and that’s fine too.

Let his career be his own. If he chooses to make it public then it should be when he’s ready.

It’s easy for the rest of us who aren’t famous to claim to know what it’s like to risk your entire career which is already based on chance just to tell the world you’re gay.

Now, we could nitpick and say Bomer doesn’t identify Halls as his significant other—he just rattles him off with the names of his kids…

Ah, Queerty. I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist this, so I just came to check. Thank you for not disappointing me.

Does anyone seriously think that when they made the decision for Matt to publicly thank Simon at this event, the two of them did not know that this would be ALL OVER THE INTERNET within a couple of days? Halls, Hollywood PR Guru, didn’t know that? They thought they’d get away with a little mention at a non-televised event and no one would pick up on it?

Okay then, you can think that, but I think they knew exactly what would happen, which is: this would get picked up by all the mainstream sites, which it has – check them – and would be all over Twitter – just search “Matt Bomer”. The HuffPo article on this is now at 700+ comments.

This was a classy way for Matt to come out – and I truly believe there was no way he was going to accept an award of any kind and not acknowledge Simon – but anyone who thinks that Matt and Simon were not intending this to be an official ‘coming out’ are seriously underestimating the people they are talking about.

It seems fairly open, to me. The first name he mentions as his family is Simon – everyone mentions their partner first. He doesn’t say he’s his partner but it can’t really be taken any other way.
      I don’t think he’s closeted at all.

The Bomer coming out mission was a 100% success as shrewdly planned. Never seen so much acceptance on mainstream blogs and media comments, but it is Bomer we are talking about which makes this classy coming out so acceptable. The best part is finding Queerty again on the wrong side of it, the bullying losing side that back fired on them.

I am sick and tired of gay people connecting AIDS to the gay rights cause. AIDS is not a gay rights issue. It’s a personal health issue.

More and more, I’m of the view that gay men enjoy being thought of as sick.

Oh well, now the daily mail are reporting, it’s trended on twitter and has already made the runs with notorious PR vehicle USA and E! news…which means, his people have obviously ok’d this and his coming out has worked out exactly as THEY wanted to do it, not some mean spirited gay men on some bullying blog.”

Oh right. And Zachary Quinto’s coming out was NOTHING.

Bomer didn’t come out as gay at all. He was simply referring to his boyfriend. He might well be bisexual.

Don’t assume that the word “gay” applies to the orientation of all men who have a boyfriend.

“I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

That statement is NOT coming out. He referred to his “family” and listed 4 names. For anyone who wasn’t aware of him those 4 names could have been his brothers. They could have been his children. No one knows for sure because he didn’t say. Actually coming out would have been a statement like this

“I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: My partner Simon and our three children: Kit, Walker and Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

“Hi, I’m Matt Bomer. Maybe you’ve seen me on my show White Collar? And I’m gay. I was in the running to play Superman. Did I tell you I was gay? I had a minor part in the movie In Time, but I wasn’t gay in that, but I am in real life.”

Honestly, is THAT what you want him to say?

It’s patently obvious that the man is gay, in a good solid relationship, which he is living OUT IN THE OPEN.

Why does he actually HAVE to say “I’m gay”?

I thought we were hoping for a day where a gay person can just be who they are, without the presumption that they are straight? AND without having to announce that they are gay?

      Isn’t that the ideal world?

@MikeE: Yes, it’s obvious to people “within” the gay commnity that Bomer is gay. But, I also want people outside of the gay community to know that he is gay. That’s what helps to move things forward. When the general public knows someone that they admire is gay. Someone they can look at and realize that being gay doesn’t appear to be what the anti-gay bigots describe gay as.

Yes, in the ideal world, it wouldn’t matter. But, that ideal world would include total equality and we aren’t there yet. When more people come out, including well known people like Matt Bomer, it will help move us toward that ideal world.

      @David Ehrenstein:

Please, Quinto’s was BIG. Much bigger and more important because he was in Star Trek. As best friends who went to college together and are still really close, uncanny how they both did it THEIR way. How many people like Queerty used to say Quinto would “never come out”?

I also think you missed my point entirely. This isn’t what Bomer wants. In fact I bet he is having a heart attack he is so shy. No, my point was to Queerty who claimed that only gay blogs would pick up on this and their favourite punch boy “would still be in the closet”.

And I was saying actually, he’s constantly trending. He’s now 2nd after Sports Illustrated on google. He’s got more then 1K comments on Huffington Post, not all nice, some pretty homophobic and the Daily Mail, Telegraph etc in the UK have reported it as fact.

The only people who haven’t are the sanctimonious gang of After Elton and Queerty. Even Boyculture who spends enough time making snide remarks about Bomer, said he was out.

As usual Queerty thing they are more powerful then they are and think that everyone despises Bomer as much as they do.

Everyone from US Magazine, People in the US to The Daily Mail, Telegraph in the UK have reported as fact that he is gay. In fact the Mail went one bit further and lied. They said that Bomer said “The rumors are true….I am Gay”. Lolz

Anyway, I would like to point something out to Cam et al, although I disagree deeply with the way you all argue your points and methodology of coming out as an actor/actress….having followed this on Twitter, I have to admit you are all somewhat right. A lot of people did not know he was gay.

The majority happens to be girls-young women, young men black & white who think Neal Caffery is ‘swag’ and a ‘nigga’, plus foreigners…i.e people from spanish speaking countries.

So I’ll admit that he wasn’t out, although he was in a sense because the reaction speaks for itself.

Should be interesting how this pans out! Seen quite a few I won’t watch WC anymore! :-(

      @David Ehrenstein:

Well it means that I am not god, nor do I have the right to presume some sort of gay outing framework, when most people think so differently from me!

Look, I deal with facts, not emotions. When I enter a discussion, I try gain as much background information as I can from various sources and I also look at the market-what are people thinking? What do they look like etc The demographic. Lastly I look at the main channels-news from TMZ to E! to Twitter. And I will also look at the niche-gay sites mainly and some tumblr sites.

Then I will make up my mind about a decision.

For a long time in my life I assumed everyone did the same, I mean this is what we had to learn at school before doing an essay at 15. It’s what you learn about debate. You research..no?

So using that framework, not only is Matt Bomer out, he has gone three steps further the Spacey and Quinto ever did by

      1) Taking his partner to events. At least Parson’s does this part.
      2) Officially hosting and giving money to gay charities with his partner, visible on financial statements NOT anonymously.
      3) Publicly lent his name and support gay events/charities. At least Quinto did this part.

So any person with half a brain cell can figure out that a spectrum appears to exist and maybe the glass closet isn’t one big fat wardrobe where they are all held accountable on the same issues. Especially as it obvious to any nutjob that Bomer and his super publicist partner, were playing a strategy on THEIR terms.

So this is why it should be obvious that he is out but because 99% of human beings are THICK and do not know how to research, accumulate or analyses simple information, he’s not out.

I mean whether it’s gay guys on Queerty with their mentalness or the fangurls on Quinto’s imdb thread that even after the blog master told them she saw him introduce his boyfriend Groff, they would go rants to anyone who accused him of being gay by saying that he is Bi or….Asexual!?

Mindblowing but the gays are just as dogmatic when it comes to who they decide to conveniently pick and choose to lie over.

“1) Taking his partner to events. At least Parson’s does this part.”

He has also done “Broadway Bares.”

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_KkygG_HW0&feature=player_embedded

“2) Officially hosting and giving money to gay charities with his partner, visible on financial statements NOT anonymously.”

“The Gay Charities Fianacial Starement Hour” is my favorite BRAVo show.

“3) Publicly lent his name and support gay events/charities. At least Quinto did this part.”

Quinto did a hell of a lot more than that. He came out specifically in order to do his part to counter the LGBT suicide epidemic.

“So any person with half a brain cell can figure out that a spectrum appears to exist and maybe the glass closet isn’t one big fat wardrobe where they are all held accountable on the same issues. Especially as it obvious to any nutjob that Bomer and his super publicist partner, were playing a strategy on THEIR terms.”

“Let’s drink, Jedediah, to love on my terms. They’re the only terms anyone ever knows.”
      Now what’s that from?

“So this is why it should be obvious that he is out but because 99% of human beings are THICK and do not know how to research, accumulate or analyses simple information, he’s not out.”

Being out does not require reasearch on the public’s part You’re either out or you’re not. You make it sound like being “slightly pregnant.”

Matt Bomer is now out. No one had to go to the Antoine Doinel Detective Agency to find this out. Bomer said so himself in public. That’s what public figures do — they live their lives in public.

“I mean whether it’s gay guys on Queerty with their mentalness or the fangurls on Quinto’s imdb thread that even after the blog master told them she saw him introduce his boyfriend Groff, they would go rants to anyone who accused him of being gay by saying that he is Bi or….Asexual!?”

The IMDB is a hotbed of homophobic denial. There are even people still in there asking “Is Neil Patrick Harris really gay?”

“Mindblowing but the gays are just as dogmatic when it comes to who they decide to conveniently pick and choose to lie over.”

I wouldn’t call it dogmatic as the pickers and choosers are a sub-set unto themselves. My position has always been OUT THEM ALL!!!!

When I hear him actually say in some context “I’m gay”, then and only then will he be out. Rattling off a list of names, one of whom is your partner’s name, without identifying him as your partner is NOT coming out. And I couldn’t agree more with the person who characterized the IMDB message board as a “hotbed of homophobic denial” Indeed it is. Fangurls have been SCREAMING about how “straight” Matt is ever sinse ’09. That will continue and the stigma of being gay will continue until he REALLY comes out.

I thought it was Monty Cliff Ms. Bankhead was referring to in that ancient story, but never mind. Believe it or not, gay people are just human beings like anyone else. Let them announce their sexuality in their own time and in their own heartfelt way. It’s the ones who are still trying to fake it that bug me. They are morally cheating and defrauding the folks who still give a rat’s ass who someone bunks with. But for gay performers just trying to live their lives with quiet dignity, let them announce it when it feels right, K, sister?
