I agree that the twin parties have mainly cosmetic differences but Obama is not a fascist nor are the Democrats and Republicans as a whole. They’re not even close.

I was disgusted with the racism displayed by much of the gay community in the aftermath of Prop 8 and agree that it shows the gay community has huge work to do in fighting racism. The events leading up to and following the 2008 election also prove that the African American community has a huge problem with bigotry against gay people, something I have yet to see you admit.

I do not doubt, Kev, that some prominent African American leaders would say that Obama shows as much knowledge of and sympathy for gay people as he does for African American people. Most sane people, however, and especially most sane African American leaders, would laugh at them. Don’t you think?

Appropriating Judaism is an intrinsic part of African American culture, not unique to Obama. The slavery link is why AAs are still primarily members of a church that helped to enslave them. If some Black Joseph Smith had come up with an African Jewish cult in Reconstruction, I think it could have taken off. I don’t trust anyone who thinks God loves him better than anyone else. That goes for Blacks and Jews and Mormons and people with autism and Larry Kramer. I understand why we all need to feel that way, but we’re wrong. We can’t help putting ourselves in the center of the universe: it’s when we tell ourselves that we are right to do so that our religious beliefs become dangerous.

I think Barack Obama understands as well as anyone what it’s like to be an outsider and an outcast in many different ways, including in his “own community” (whatever that is).

The sense of always wandering, never having a home, for example. Obama identifies with and understands very much with the cultural Jewish experience.

I could very well do poststructuralist/queer theoretical/literary theory route and queer Obama up really easily.

The thing is most people are so used to putting people into a box (black, white, Jewish, etc.) Barack Obama refuses to allow himself to be placed in a box. Or rather, he fits into too many boxes. But…at the same time, you do realize that whether it be propsotion 8 or almost every other gay rights initiative, we’re just responding to what the opposition has already done instead of being proactive in anticipating it. By doing this, we lose the stategic advantage of not only throwing them off their game, but beating them to the punch as it were in doing so. That’s why, though I refuse to condemn Obama’s lack of…anything for gay rights compared to the rhetoric issued before his election…but at the same time, if we wait, it will once again catch us off guard, and more than likely, we’ll rally for familiarity (democratic party) falling for the same empty rhetoric.

That’s why it’s hard to come down on anti obama and anti democratic sentiment expressed on these blogs. They may be ahead of the curve.

It’s early yet, he has four years, but if he doesn’t come through he’s not getting my vote a second time.

Do you really think that someone is running LGBT communications at the White House? I think a lot of the people who run communications for Obama are gay, so they don’t think they need to worry about LGBT communications specifically at all. That those gay people don’t give a shit about LGBT issues and care only about annointing the feet of their messiah is the reason Obama communication with the gays is so shitty. It’s post-partisan, too, right, just like not giving interviews to gay press.

I don’t think there is some gay person out there planning communication with us and doing a bad job of it. I think Obama Inc. has yet to figure out that they are not communicating as effectively with the gay community as they are with our leaders.
The gay press has decided to give Obama a pass on everything. So has the HRC. Even Andy Towle, for God’s sake, has become a DNC lapdog. As irritated as I am at the reflexively anti-Obama tone here, Andy didn’t cover this story until the change from “change” to “repeal” had been made.
