Why It Was No Big Deal to Gareth Thomas’s Wife Jemma When He Told Her He Fancied Men

Is Jemma Thomas, the soon-to-be ex-wife of out rugby star Gareth, the classiest lady in all the land? Learning her husband was a gay three years ago, she now says she has no regrets about their marriage — and doesn’t even consider Gareth’s sleeping with other men, while they were still together, to be “cheating.” Of course she also doesn’t want to think about her one-time lover buggering other men.

Jim McGreevey only wishes he were this lucky.

When Gareth told Jemma he thought he was gay, her response was, “I think you are.” Well! “It was very strange, my reply, because I’d never mistrusted him with a woman yet I never knew anything had been going on with a man either. I had my suspicions and there were lots of rumours when he was much younger but there was never anything substantial for me to go on so I kind of just blocked it out and put it to the back of my mind. I knew that Gareth loved me so dearly and he never gave me any just cause or reason to think he was having an affair with another woman. He would always come home, he was a very caring, very passionate person and I didn’t for one minute think it would have been another woman because I trusted him.”

Life is full of surprises, eh?

The pair, who dated off-and-on before their 2001 marriage, and have no children after Jemma suffered three miscarriages, are leaving things on great terms. Or at least as great as they can be when your husband tells you he likes other dudes. But for Jemma, it was easier knowing he was leaving her to be with other men — because if it were for another woman, then she’d feel inadequate. “It wasn’t like I’d done anything wrong or done anything to cause the situation. At the end of the day there was nothing I could have done to change the situation.”
