With Mayor Adrian Fenty’s Signature, Gay Marriage Is Officially Legal In Washington D.C. (Almost!)

Congress still has 30 days to review it, but D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty just signed into law marriage equality in the nation’s capital. “The ceremony at All Souls Unitarian Church — one of many in the city that supported the legislation — opened with comments by Fenty, Council chairman Vincent Gray, and Council members Phil Mendelson, David Catania and Jim Graham. In his opening remarks, Fenty recalled that when his own parents were married, many states would have refused to recognize their bonds. Fenty’s father is black, while his mother is white. ‘Today an era of struggle ends for thousands of D.C. residents,’ he said. ‘Our city is taking a leap forward.’”

Lets hope there is no glitch during the congressional review period. Gallagher has vowed to have it overturned if and when it passes.

Since I live in New York City, I’ll be going to Connecticut and spending my money there to get married depriving NY State of much needed tax revenues since 8 conservative democrats in our state are okay voting against the state economy that affects everyone in our state, not just LGBT people. The negative impact on states’ economies by denying us equality will have ramifications over time, especially in our state where we are bordering on bankruptcy if Paterson’s drastic budget cuts are’nt implemented. Losing money to Connectict can only harm NY in the long run. Bring it on.

So when this is official

Congress has 30 working days to intervene. A “working day” is one on which Congress is in session. With long weekends and the holiday recess, It will likely be a couple of months before the new law takes effect. It’s unlikely that Congress will block the law, but another tactic opponents may try is to prohibit the district from spending any money to implement it. DC passed a medical marijuana law in 1998 and only this week did Congress stop blocking funds for its implementation.

A happy day for us in DC. Local news shows are running stories about how this could benefit the economy here in DC quite significantly. And a great gay minister, Rob Hardies (who is brilliant beyond belief) was standing by Mayor Fenty as he signed this legislation. I love DC today. And we’re about to get wallopped with 20 inches of snow on Saturday.

it is amazing that a predominantly minority populated place like the district of columbia can pass legislation like this where Maine and California cannot this will end this canard about how anti-gay African Americans are.

It’s not a canard. African Americans disproportionately do not favor equal rights, including marriage rights. Every survey that’s broken down by race shows this. Same for Latinos. For whatever reason, Asian Americans are the only racial minority that trends toward supporting equality.

No. 13 · FakeName: Amen, I can never understand the very short memory of the black community. It was not too long ago they were denied the same rights we were seeking…….
