"There is an appalling level of endemic homophobia in Liverpool…These people need to be challenged in an open way. I’ve urged the chief executive to take up the programmes we’ve been running across the city, but so far they’ve been limited to the work we’ve done." – Liberal councillor Steve Radford on the English town's levels of gay acceptance. This is the first that I've heard about the murder of Michael Causer. Is it just my skewed perception, or has 2008 already been one of the nastiest years in terms of the number and severity of homophobia-related attacks?

Yes, it seems to be Trenton. I think there might be some connection between the massive volume of anti gay filth coming out of the mouths of religious figures around the world and the increase in attacks on gays.

Not sure you can actually pinpoint a direct connection between, say the poop making an anti gay statement, and some gay juvenile being kicked to death on the streets of liverpool, but there if definitely an increase in street attacks on gays and the volume of anti-gay rhetoric spouted in the media.
