“Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear that Del Martin had passed. Del committed her life to fighting discrimination and promoting equality. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her spouse Phyllis Lyon, and all those who were touched by her life.” – Presidential candidate Barack Obama on gay rights icon Del Martin, who died yesterday.
The Obama’s talk about Stonewall and gender identity. They know who Del Martin is and refer to Phyllis Lyon as her spouse, and not her partner.
They get it.
Marco, I agree. And Obama also came out against Prop 8, which would amend California’s state Constitution to ban gay marriage.
Why “passed”? I hate that euphemism.
The term “passed” is not necessarily a euphemism. To many of us,
the only part of a person that actually “dies” is the physical body.
But the person who inhabited that body, their spirit, their essence,
“passes” or moves to it’s next plane of existence. They may reincarnate into a new body, they may remain in a purely spiritual state existing on another plane of reality. Many use the term passed because they simply do not believe in the term death and the finality that is often associated with it.
So are those who have railed against Obama’s failure to recognize marriage equality going to listen closely to what he says here (“SPOUSE”) and realize that yes, Virginia, there IS a difference between Obama and mccain?
Good point EMB.
