Yes Virgina, There Are Gay Soldiers

The report that gay and lesbians are among the 2,000 U.S. troops killed in Iraq should not come as a surprise. Remember, the military is in desperate need of soldiers and they’re not passing over any handy homos during wartime. So how many gays are out there fighting?

“Lesbian and gay soldiers are fighting and dying in Iraq, too,” said C. Dixon Osburn, Executive Director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN). “Because of the muzzle placed on the 65,000 gay service members now reporting for duty, the stories of those wounded and killed often go untold. There is no doubt, however, that the LGBT community has served and sacrificed in Iraq, just as they have in every American conflict since the American Revolution.”

You bet we have. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” hasn’t changed shit. We’re everywhere and those gays who’ve braved the battlefield should not go left unacknowledged. You see, some gays are not only proud of their pink triangles but also of their purple hearts! Yes, gays have died in Iraq and they’ll continue to along with their straight brother and sisters as long as W keeps them there. At the very least, get them more stylish duds.

Oh, and note to the SLDN: next time you hire a spokesperson, make sure his name doesn’t sound exactly like See Dicks On Ass Burn? Just a thought.
