Yet Another “Youth” Site Fights Gay Nups

A recent poll indicated that youth voters have been instrumental in the fight against California’s Proposition 8. Such a statement should lift progressive people’s spirits, but that’s just one side of the story.

Last month we passed along word about iProtect, a “hip,” youth-targeting website dedicated to regurgitating traditional anti-gay attacks. Well, iProtect’s not the only one working the barely legal angle.

A new group of guppies in the Sunshine State have launched What Is Prop 8, of which webmaster Kenny McNett says,

The reason why many people are not in favor of Proposition 8 is that they are not informed on how it may negatively impact their lives. We created whatisprop8.com to inform voters of the direct and indirect consequences of same-sex marriage.

Like iProtect, “What Is” relies primarily on tried-and-true half-truths and panic-ridden politics, i.e. “Children in public schools will have to be taught that same-sex marriage is just as good as traditional marriage.” Good heavens!

Hate to quibble but the Sunshine State is Florida, not California. And we have our own proposition problems on the ballot next month.

It seems to have been taken off facebook. I went to the group and all the posts were empty, only a link to the site remained.

I’m getting tired of seeing these Mormon spambots everywhere.

Anytime you see http://www.whatisprop8.com, you know it’s coming from a member of the LDS church.

Head over and check out “How to Blog About Prop 8″ at http://www.whatisprop8.com/how-to-blog-about-prop-8.html …

It’s basically a primer for Mormons on how to become Latter Day Spammers.

A quick check of the comments sections under the news articles that turn up from a search for Prop 8 terms reveals numerous drive-by comments with convoluted “Yes on 8 = tolerance” arguments and always accompanied by a link to http://www.whatisprop8.com

This approach reminds me of some of the stuff I saw getting tried during the Romney campaign. In the current campaign, I don’t think such tactics are well-suited for the target voters the Yes on 8 campaign needs if they’re going to actually win this thing. Californians who’d be persuaded by such obvious tactics are more than likely either not going to vote or are already planning to vote Yes.
