California governor Jerry Brown has signaled whether he will sign SB 48 – the California FAIR Education Act. The bill would ensure the inclusion of historical LGBT figures into the state’s public school social studies curriculum. So now’s the time to send Mr. Brown some e-mails and call him at 916-445-2841.
Karen Ocamb at The Bilerico Project explains how to work the phone’s automated system:
This is an automated line. You will be asked if you want English or Spanish. You will then be asked if you want to express your opinion on legislation – that’s option #2. You will then be asked if you’re calling about SB 48 – prohibition against discriminatory education – press #1. Then you will be asked if you want to support – press #1. Please Note: the automated message is a bit finicky – please wait until the guy finishes before pressing your option.
And if you want another reason for helping the legislation become law, consider this thought nugget from USA Today: “Whatever happens will influence the fate of potential legislation elsewhere. And California, like Texas, is such a massive customer of textbooks that it skews what publishers offer.”
History and education matter.
How about we take this to the next level?

@GreatGatsby2011: What number did you dial? I keep trying and can’t get through.

Guys, don’t bother calling except to thank the governor – Jerry Brown has signed the bill, saying nice things about its author Mark Leno. It just made the news, but has not yet shown up on QUEERTY (it probably will shortly).
