Your Phone Calls Are Pissing Off NY Sen. Diaz

“A dissident Democrat who sought to block the legalization of gay marriage says he’s being threatened by gay advocates. Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. of the Bronx, a minister, says the gay community is jamming his office phone and making threats to him and his staff. He also lashed out at newspaper editorial boards that have been critical of his efforts that could deny Democrats a majority and called political commentator and former New York City Mayor Ed Koch a rat. Diaz says he will either join the Republicans, stay neutral to create an impasse, or join the Democratic conference.” [AP]

Ministers shouldn’t be allowed to hold public office.

Awww so sorry our phone calls are bothering him… maybe if he hadn’t decided to endorse hate he wouldn’t be in this position.

Diaz is a rat. I hate when I agree with Koch.

BTW, Japhy, I really hate these gaydar borders or whatever they are. They make the site look cheap. Sorry.

From this week’s New York Blade:

Last month, grassroots activists such as Jeff Campagna orchestrated thousands of callers to phone Diaz’ office and ask him to support Smith as Democratic Senate leader.

Evidently, the calls were made. Diaz told The Daily News’ Elizabeth Benjamin this week that: “The gays are calling my office. They’re jamming my phones. They’re going to see what we can do. They’re going to see exactly what we can do.”

But Campagna sees that vague threat as a red herring. “He’s trying to build up some sympathy. It’s a lie. Some of the people calling him might have been gay, but a lot are straight. A lot of black, a lot are white. They are Democrats demanding that he not hold the Democratic Party hostage.

“I don’t think there’s a need to call Diaz at this point,” Campagna added, referring to the fact the power play had crumbled. “There’s no need to take action on these three people right now.”

BTW: As much as I enjoy ogling the hunk in the margins, it’s a tacky/sleazy embarrassment.

If this is the new face and body of Queerty, I’ll visit the site much less during the day.

Japhy: Publish Diaz’s office phone number so that we may call and share our views with him as well.

Oh poor baby. I wonder how many calls he’d make if someone was trying to avoid giving him equality.

When I called a few weeks ago and “threatened” to fight his reelection, the disaggreable operator asked me if I was “threatening” the senator.

That PISSED me off and I screamed at her NOT TO TRY TO INTIMIDATE ME, she knew full well that I was NOT threatening the senator’s safety, and to cut it out, or I will make it a point to call her bluff, and sue her for threatening MY free speech through unwarranted and devious intimidation.

She got it.

But apparently the RAT is trying to get bullshit sympathy, as if…

CALL HIM and tell him this is his LAST term as he will NOT be reelected!:

If you’re contrary for no reason other than to piss of your party, your constituents are going to call you to ask why. If you’re not comfortable with this, stop being a politician, because EVERYBODY hates politicians.

@Hunky Trog:

Apparently, that is already happening, hunky trog. I have been on Queerty for most of the day, and noted that there were far, far, fewer posts than normal. There has been little or no activity on any of the blogs.

I keep asking myself why so many businesses and Internet site these days seem to be going out of their way to antagonize and turn-off their supporters and patrons?

@walt zipprian: Couldn’t agree more. If they can’t (and obviously they can’t) be trusted to leave their idiot mysticism and bigotry at home, they shouldn’t be allowed to be public representatives.

Folks, Queerty and most other blogs are in financial trouble! Two of Queerty’s sister sites, Stereohyped and Mollygood, closed down over the last few weeks.

Give Japhy and company a break. There is a recession going on that is BRUTAL for advertisement driven media. Look at what’s happening to print newspapers and magazines: they are having massive layoffs, cutting pages, and closing shop.

No ministers could ever hold public office? So…Martin Luther King would never/should never have ever been elected to any public office?

I certainly want these (free) blogs to stay in business. And I support their talented editors.

It’s just sad and frustrating that in gay media, the dependable ad revenue is sexually tinged advertisements, if not blatant ads for hustlers and porn sites.

And I say this as someone who is extremely liberal about sex.

I agree with Nick (the other one) people have to make money and I for one am glad that gaydar is trying to get into the US market it would be nice to see something replace mancunt.

As for Diaz if he wants to be an Republican he should be one and quit pretending otherwise. What ever happened to christian tolerance or was that just a myth to begin with?

@Hunky Trog:

And straight magazines and TV don’t use sexually tinged ads? What about those Levi commercials with the horny girl and guy picking up their clothes from around the street?

As for sex adverts, Queerty is a pretty much a hard PG-13 site. I’ve never seen full nudity or sex ads. How is Gaydar.net different from eHarmony or Chemistry.com? All three are dating sites. Right?

That said, I don’t like the ad since they are kinda cheezy. Also, they continue the stereotype of a young, white guy-only gay community where non-whites, older folks, and others don’t exist.

If anyone does leave Queerty because of a wrap-around ad, then you haven’t been to many other websites. These are desperate times. If you don’t support gay-themed media, who will? Why would anyone bother to publish it if there is no money?

I have noticed that the number of comments has decreased but that seems to be a general trend amongst most blogs because of the end of the Presidential race. Frankly, I’m happy to see that some of worst commenters, racists like Churchill-y, have disappeared.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool capitalist and a business owner as well, so I certainly understand the need for advertising. It is the life-blood of all free enterprise.

You make an excellent point, Hunky Trog. I am no prude when it comes to pornography and like you, I am extremely liberal about sex. That said, however, why must all gays ads be sexually tinged, if not blatant ads for hustlers and porn sites? It makes us look like dick is the one and only thing we ever have on our mind, 24/7/365.

The LGBT community is crying out for same-sex marriage, but if the best image we can put forth for ourselves, is that of a herd of sex-crazed animals, it is not hard to understand why over 50% of Americans do not think we deserve that right, not that I am supporting that view, mind you. I am a fierce supporter of LGBT civil rights.

Just sayin’…

Speaking of Ministers….

This is admittedly off topic, but it was just too good not to pass on. I came across this tid-bit in an article entitled Gay Liberation on Wikipedia last night while surfing the Net.

“Although a short-lived group, the Comite Pederastique de la Sorbonne, had meetings during the student uprising of May 1968, the real public debut of the modern gay liberation movement in France occurred on 10 March 1971, when a group of lesbians from the Front Homosexuel d’Action Révolutionnaire (FHAR) disrupted a live radio broadcast entitled “Homosexuality, This Painful Problem”.[9] The expert guests, including a Catholic priest, were suddenly interrupted by a group of lesbians from the audience, yelling, “It’s not true, we’re not suffering! Down with the heterocops!” The protesters stormed the stage, one young woman taking hold of the priest’s head and pounding it repeatedly against the table. The control room quickly cut off the microphones and switched to recorded music.”

I think this lady was definitely onto something good. Too bad that more sane people have not followed her lead. ;-)

I guess gay new yorkers should just roll over and play dead for diaz. Ain’t gonna happen.
It’s sad that he democratic party made a backroom deal with him and two others. They’ll back the majority leader from their party in exchange for more power and that gay marriage legislation will not be put forth.
