Here’s the thing: If you’re going to willingly pursue the limelight as the world’s most popular boy band pop act, you’re going to have to be cool with some people thinking you’re gay.

It’s just inevitable.

And if you’re One Direction, constantly egging these rumors on in the media, it’s pretty foolish to think they’ll just go away after you’ve had your laugh.

But according to a recent interview with ex-bandmate Zayn Malik, that self-inflicted gossip is, like, really hard.

Here’s what he had to say:

“There’s no secret relationships going on with any of the band members,” he says. “It’s not funny, and it still continues to be quite hard for them.

“They won’t naturally go put their arm around each other because they’re conscious of this thing that’s going on, which is not even true. They won’t do that natural behaviour.”

He adds: “But it’s just the way the fans are. They’re so passionate, and once they get their head around an idea, that’s the way it is regardless of anything. If it wasn’t for that passionate, like, almost obsession, then we wouldn’t have the success that we had.”

It’s not funny, ok?
