You may recognize actor Brandon Flynn from Netflix’s recent hit 13 Reasons Why, in which he plays the roguish Justin Foley.

The actor just came out in a heartfelt Instagram post, which does double duty as a plea for marriage equality in Australia.

He was reportedly inspired to come out after seeing “Vote No” in skywriting over Sydney, Australia.

“I hope your hate and lack of understanding fades,” he writes, “just like those words will.”

“Too many of my friends have been kicked out of their homes, kept in the closet, beat up, killed, ridiculed by church and state, institutionalized. And you are scared that if we vote YES, you won’t be able to show your hate for Us. Fuck that.

We’ve been scared shitless our whole lives, thanks to all the stigmas that surround us—stigmas that were set in place by the same kind of people who flew that plane over Sydney.

We’ve fought, we’ve come out bravely even in our fear, and you wrote a message in the sky because you’re scared. Equality takes courage, it worries me that too many people in this world lack the balls to stand up for what is right. #fuckhate”

Just saw the "vote no" message in the sky, looming over Sydney. Thank you for raising money and hiring on a plane to write your lack of support amongst the clouds. I hope your hate and lack of understanding fades, just like those words will. This April, a handful of Instagram posts featured Flynn and his 13 Reasons co-star Miles Heizer in some affectionate poses that led many to wonder whether they were dating in real life.

At the time, Heizer’s rep told Page Six, “Miles and Brandon are friends from the show but are not dating.”

I for one look forward to the day when it’s not necessary to people “come out” either as straight or gay, and people can just be people.

I was thinking about that just this evening, if in the future we could just ever see PEOPLE in love.

Wasn’t he always “out”? Everyone who was his and Alex’s fans in 13 reasons knew this. I’m glad his “coming out” is simply him just being himself and everyone else just making a deal about it.
