In the decades before CGI, Hollywood took science fiction fans to worlds that were unlike anything we had seen before – some good, some bad, and some oh-so-bad-they’re-good.
However, the best special effects from the 60s, 70s, and 80s were the hot heroes (from the beefy to the twinky) who made us want to buckle up and engage our warp drive. Some are still at it, some have sadly passed on, and some are now bat-shit crazy, but at one point they were the brightest stars in the galaxy.
So break out your tricorder and get ready to scan the area as we take a look back at these 17 classic sci-fi studs you forgot were totally hot!

You added noted misogynist, anti-Semite, homophobe, and all around asshole, Mel Gibson? Your list is flawed.
Tobi
I remember the gorgeous Jon-Erik Hexum for starring opposite Joan Collins in the Making of a Male Model and for the fact that he accidentally managed to blow his brains out playing Russian-rou lette with a gun loaded with blanks.
BigG
Kyle Reese was my fave. Damn he was and still is sexy as hell. That voice and lips. Big crush on Marc singer from V when I was younger and jeff bridges. Back when men actually looked like men.
ryuichi
I would put Mel Gibson on a totally different list, which would include Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.
Mack
Jon-Erik Hexum will always the be the one. Too short of a life though. Remember it clearly.
DavidThomasCurran
@Mack: Me too! He was my first crush! So sad!
silveroracle
Who wouldn’t want a bit of Harrison Ford and also Gil Gerard.
ppp111
@ryuichi:
Totally agree. I would have removed Gibson and replaced him with Lee Majors from the Six Million Dollar Man. The scene where he and Lindsay Wagner infiltrate Dr. Franklin’s island and he’s running around only in shorts still lives in my memory. Glad I bought the DVD to relive it!
PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
Ben (the bulge) Browder from Australian sci-fi nonsense Farscape

PS Damn did that dude fall off!

Michael Bhein. In The Fan, killing all those queers for the love of Lauren Bacall. Gil Gerard I had fantasies and still do. And Jon Erik what a tagedy. I even fantasized about Bruce Lee even though he struggled to get those English words out with difficulty. He was a cutie and so confident. Mel was perfect too bad he had a rotten personality. And William Shatner wad cute in the 60s but what an a**hole. And a short diva.
Next, do the hunk from 60s TV westerns. Robert Fuller made me cream jeans quite a few times. Robert Conrad in those tight pants. They all had a swagger with a gun holster bracing their buns with a cowboy hat framing their perfectly chiseled good looks. Another Sci if hunk is Dolph Lundgren. Incredible. Not a tv star but still. I would.

It looks like Bill Shatner is holding two men or women’s heads to his crotch doing the deed. What is that ? I have a photo made with Bill and he comes to about my belly button and had a terrible rug on his head. Poor thing.
BFIrrera
LEE MAJORS! Steve Austin running around in shorts or with his shirt blowing open in the breeze, showing off all that fur on his chest.
PATRICK DUFFY! The Man From Atlantis!
Chris
@IDoNotHaveToAgreeWithYou: Really! Maybe not SF strictly speaking; but it’s fantasy in more ways than one.
Sansacro
@ppp111: Yes!
Sansacro
@PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID: Nice find! Definitely, yes!
Sansacro
@BFIrrera: Patrick Duffy, Gil Gerard, and Lee Majors, Most definitely Yes Yes Yes.
And who is this Michael Dorn. I lived through that era. What a hot man covered in all that prosthetics.
Mars414
I’m adding Michael Billington from the 70s UK sci-fi series “UFO”, Wesley Eure from “Land of the Lost”, Richard Hatch from “Battlestar Galactica” (way hotter than Dirk Benedict), and James Naughton from the “Planet of the Apes” TV series.
Silent_Joe
Yeah, when your most iconic role is Superman, there’s no way people would forget you’re hot.
Silent_Joe
I also remember my first exposure to Chuck Wagner was as Rapunzel’s Prince in the original Broadway version of Into the Woods. Had a bit of a crush on him there.
BECQueerty
Patrick Duffy in “Man From Atlantis”! As a kid, I loved that show… like a lot! Kinda of the first time I noticed I like half naked men on TV – and in real life. Hee, hee! Someone mentioned Ben Browder… man, the Farscape season where he has spiky hair and is walking around in that leather long-coat…! Schwing! Also, Harry Hamlin in “Clash of the Titans”, which I guess is more fantasy than sci-fi, but who cares! That nipple through the ENTIRE movie. I worshiped it!
Stilinski26
@IDoNotHaveToAgreeWithYou: Lmao Beastmaster was my childhood!
Masc Pride
In what classic sci-fi universe was Ms. George Takei ever considered a stud? Thanks for my LOL of the day, Queerty.
Christopher Reeves is definitely the hottest hands down, but no Dean Cain (even though half of him would’ve helped to meet the obvious Asian/minority quota here)?
