Darren Criss Is Figuring Out How To Succeed In Show Business Without Really Trying

It was at Prince Azim of Brunei’s birthday party in the middle of the English countryside. He’s a fan of Glee. I never thought I would meet Mariah Carey, but I really never thought I’d be introduced to her by Whitney Houston. She’s like, “Hey, baby, this is Mariah.” I’m like, “I know. I’m Darren. I don’t know what I’m doing here.”

Glee‘s Darren Criss, on the sometimes surreal nature of fame, in the February issue of Details.

    I hope Whitney didn’t offer to introduce you to crack because “Crack is Whack!”

  • MEJ

    No wonder he’s so desperate to stay closeted.

  • Esculapio Mitiríades Torquemada de la Cueva

    @MEJ: You seem pretty certain he’s gay. I assume he’s personally sucked your cock?

  • Until

    Take away my gay card but I don’t get the facination with this guy. I understand the tweens find him sexy but after seeing him at an event he is like a 4 foot tall little little boy who is mildly talented.

  • Holla

    Prince Azim “is a big fan of glee” and invites the dude who plays a gay guy to his birthday party, but the Sultanate of Brunei is makes homosexuality illegal and puts queers in prison. I can’t decide whether this is hopeful or upsetting.

  • Esculapio Mitiríades Torquemada de la Cueva

    @MEJ: My bad, then.

    Is it possible to have the hots for a character and not the actor? That’s where I’m with Darren Criss. And no he is not gay. He has a pretty GF named Mia.

  • Cam

    @heydrichmuller: said…

    “And no he is not gay. He has a pretty GF named Mia.”

    Oh yes, and So did Riki Martin, oh and Rosie O’Donnell was in love with Tom Cruise….

    I don’t know if this guy is gay, but claiming somebody isn’t gay because they had a girlfriend is just about the stupidest thing out there.

  • Mark

    He’s not gay.

  • wc1

    You know this because her personally fucked your sister?

  • Lefty

    He’s using London gay street slang – “Prince Azim of Brunei’s birthday party” is a fetish club night in Old Compton Street, London. “the English countryside” means between two leather-clad bears. “Mariah Carey” is coprophilia and “Whitney Houston” is what all the girls call Prince Harry.

    There’s a rumor circulating that “a male member of the Glee cast got hired after one of the show’s producers enjoyed blowing the guy.” I assumed it was Ryan Murphy blowing Darren Criss, as Criss didn’t come onboard until season 2. Ah, Hollywood. Some things never change.

  • steve sydney

    I for one hope he doesn’t have a long career

    Because I don’t want to made to feel as if I should enjoy him for the next 30-40 years just because he played a gay character once!

  • Esculapio Mitiríades Torquemada de la Cueva

    @Lefty: :-) I actually LOLed. Thanks!

  • Mark

    @wc1: you live up to your name. Congrats!

    Strange that Darren Criss is playing the wide-eyed ingenue as to how he ended up at the party. As if some jaded old agent didn’t tell him: “Pack your backing track to Teenage Dream, you’ve got first class tickets to Britain and you’ll be paid $x amount to show up.” Parties hosted by Asian or Middle Eastern billionaires have been a lucrative staple for divas like Whitney and Mariah for some time. It’s the one place they can go where they’re really treated like the queens they believe they are. It can of course go horribly wrong, like when Beyonce sang at the soiree hosted by one of Gaddafi’s sons. But by and large these gigs take place under the radar.

  • Bryan

    @Lefty: A genuinely funny, non-snarky comment on here lol.

    And while he’s probably not gay, hanging around so much gayness in Glee and broadway has probably made him open to experimenting, *wink*, jk.

  • heydrichmuller

    @Cam: Except of course for the fact that Martin and O’Donnell NEVER denied or confirmed their sexuality. Yes they used gender-neutral pronouns but neither gave a publicly definite “I’m straight”. Darren however gave a definite answer which means he knows who he is whether you want to believe it or not. Rumored sexuality of stars who know they WILL eventually come out usually go the route of Martin & O’Donnell to minimize any future criticisms. Some completely avoid the topic and instruct their publicists to filter questions.

    I wouldn’t doubt that he’s dabbled once or twice to see what it was like, because let’s face it: he grew up in San Francisco and he majored in Theatre. But a lot of his friends and former cast mates have posted various places on the internet that they tried as hard as they could, but he’s still straight.

    Also, consider this…he has nothing to lose by coming out. His big break was as a gay character, who people lost their fucking minds over because they loved him so much. It’s not like he’s trying to keep up a hetero appearance as part of his career like Ricky Martin, Rosie O’Donnell, or Rock Hudson. He’s super vocal and supportive about gay rights and how glad he is to be playing a gay character as such an important time in the progression of the gay rights movement. And it’s not like the Glee crew is pressuring him to stay in the closet, because Chris Colfer has been publicly out for a while now.
