More and more straight guys are opening up about their gay sides. If they’re not talking about hooking up with other guys while stoned, they’re watching gay porn on the DL or confessing to being fascinated by big, huge penises. Now, new research out of the U.K. finds that heterosexual British chaps love to spoon one another, among other things.
A new study published in the journal Men and Masculinities finds that 93 percent of straight-identifying British guys have cuddled with another guy.
Sociologists Eric Anderson of the University of Winchester and Mark McCormack of Durham University interviewed a total of 40 straight-identifying undergrads about their “homosocial” behavior. Of those 40 students, 37 admitted to having “cuddled with another male.” (Cuddling was defined as “gentle physical contact for a prolonged period of time.”)
“We’re always cuddling, my lot,” one of the respondents said. “We’re all comfortable with each other.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“‘I love a quick cuddle,” another young man dished. “Just so you remember your friends are about and are there for you.”
One of the men said cuddling usually happens after a wild night of drinking.
“If your mate has a headache you can like massage his head,” he told researchers. “Or you just lie there together holding each other and laughing about how awful you feel.”
Sounds like a true bromance to us.
A whopping 98 percent — 39 out of 40 — of respondents said they’ve slept in the same bed with another man at least once. Many claimed they did so for practical reasons, such as a lack of bed space in a cramped dorm room or crashing at a friend’s place after a night on the town. Others said they did it to “feel close” to their guy friends.
“Most indicated that it was not necessary to be close friends to share a bed with someone,” researchers said. “These men are able to share beds with other men without risking their socially perceived heterosexual identity.”
Isn’t it all so fascinating?

I was at a ski event and the wind kicked up. I had a sleeping bag wrapped around me and my friend got underneath with me, then he pulled my arms around him. He is super lean and was shivering like a little pup. I opened my coat so he could get closer to my body heat and he warmed up — didn’t move the entire competition. He told me that now he knows why girls like guys to put their arms around them.
I love when guys hold me, I feel protected and cherished.

How did I know this article would be written by this particular author before even opening the page? Because, in his typical fashion, he grossly misinterprets someone else’s point and creates a sensationalist, click-bait headline. This study actually only suggests that 37 college aged British guys don’t mind gentle physical contact with the friends……

@Xzamilio: amen!!!! They used me with that pic too LOL

I wish it were true.

Shouldn’t the blokes in the picture be cuddling?

@Lovelife, yeah, legs are hot. But many guys totally neglect them.

Haven’t we seen this before on Queerty?

remember that OTHER study that said Brits only change their bed linen once a year (at most)? It sorta kinda puts a really nasty spin on spooning when the bed linen hasn’t been washed in a year. I love the note in that bed linen article about some Brit Guy’s sheets were orange because they were sleeping with a lot of girls who had on fake tanning lotion

@Xzamilio: Stole my post.
The stupid hetero worship is vomit worthy though. The pic made up for it.

I think it’s lovely to hear that men are no longer afraid to be physically intimate with their friends.

Didn’t even read the article. I just wanna know who the guys are in the photo?
They’re both F’n sexy. Any porn vids of them together? lmao

The black man is model Kevin Carnell, who has both Instagram and Tumblr accounts. The photo above is featured on both.

I think, based on the European men I have met, that this is just common for European men. They have no qualms about sharing the same bed. It is not even gay for them. Having gay sex and gay attraction is gay to them, but many of them have at least tried that once too. They like experimentation in the sexual realm. Personally, although I have identified as gay for 30+ years I still find the occasional woman attractive enough to make me wonder about trying something new. Normally its European chicks with accents.

@MarionPaige: “…remember that OTHER study that said Brits only change their bed linen once a year (at most)?”
That’s disgusting. A Brit immigrant of my acquaintance used to complain a lot about his average countryman’s lack of basic personal hygiene. Apparently lots of people will only shower once a week, if that. That was 1990, though, so I really hope it has changed.

@Captain Obvious: I do not think it is “hetero-worship.” It is more commenting on how sexuality is fluid and can be seen as even more fluid in Europe, and many things that would be too taboo for the United States are much more common place across the pond. There is nothing wrong with liking straight guys.

@vive: Study after study has shown that it is actually healthier to live the Brit lifestyle. United States has an unhealthy obsession with always being “clean,” but that actually decreases our immune efficiency.

Citations please. Southern Europeans (e.g., the Spanish) are obsessed with cleanliness, and yet have some of the longest life expectancies in the world. I certainly wouldn’t date a stinky-ass guy, but maybe that’s just me.
Xzamilio
@tdh1980: Noooooo…. I have so many pics of that dude and I didn’t even know who he was!!!!
demented
@tdx3fan: Yeah, they tend to be less obsessed with definitions and boxes, and people choosing labels and religiously sticking to them lest they “betray” someone or make the movement look bad. In their case, it’s more a matter of “you know what? It’s cool. Maybe you’re this, maybe you’re that. Just do your thing.”
Clark35
@crowebobby: Exactly. It’s queerty’s obsession with hetero men or the idea that “all men are bisexual but don’t know it!”
@vive: Italians have the highest life expectancy in Europe, especially Southern Italians but people from Southern Italy have a mixture of heritages from all over the Mediterranean like Spain, Southern France, the Middle East, Greece, and Ancient Italic/Latin people.
Clark35
vive-There are also lots of Southern Italians who have a German heritage/genetics.
Clark35
@tdx3fan: If they have sex with men then they’re at least bisexual, and not hetero.
jwtraveler
@SteveDenver: How nice for you.

@Alan down in Florida: Yes, dozens of times. Apparently many gay men are obsessed with the fantasy that all straight men are really gay.

I am so disappointed in the 2 researchers, Anderson and McCormack. I heard of them a few years ago and I thought they were doing good work. But it came out recently that Anderson said some truly horrific and disgusting things about being gay, about how he has had 1000 sexual partners and plans to have 1000 more, how he likes to bed 17-year old boys, about how he tries to have sex with the exploited foreign work force that staffs cruise ships. And there is this gem: ““The damage that’s caused by child molestation is socially constructed by the Western world.”

He is vile. And McCormack has not only failed to condemn these remarks, but apparently is best pals and co-author with Anderson. Disgusting, the both of them. Should be noted that Anderson thinks of himself as “queer” and thus sees it as his role to “deconstruct” conventional norms. Of course, academic honesty is also a social norm, so it is unclear why anyone would trust a queer academic to do honest work.
