A humorous tweet on how to deal with an LGBTQ-phobic family member has gone viral.

Posted by Twitter user @jaboukie, it says: “if you have an lgbtq phobic family member tht merely tolerates you. take them aside and explain how you have seen the light and are trying to be cishet. there are classes but they’re expensive–you want it to be a surprise to the rest of the family – so you need $8500 to be straight.”

In just over seven hours, it’s had over 100,000 likes and 15,000 retweets.

Of course, the subject of so-called conversion therapy is a serious matter. The dangerous, if not deluded practice, has been banned on minors in several US states and countries. Attempting to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling or other psychological means will not work and is likely to cause harm.

That said, most of those commenting on the tweet appreciated the pre-holidays joke.

Some speculated on whether it was a monthly or weekly fee.

Some wondered if producing a fake pamphlet might help with the hustle.

Some even shared a little of their own experiences. @renegademom said: “My parents barely tolerated me and my girlfriend. I spent my 30s (the 80s) choosing either my partner or my family on holidays. Sometimes I’d run back-and-forth on the LIRR trying to do both. To this day I hate holidays. I’m glad it’s a joke now. it was horrible and hurtful then.”

And then there were the memes.
