Now let us compare this logic to another disease… breast cancer.

@Ian: With all the stereotypes thrown at the gay community over the years, I don’t think we are in any position to start throwing them at others. Also, the Jewish people taught circumcision way before the Christian religion did, and the Bible doesn’t really touch on circumcision for Christian people that do not have a Jewish background. Also, circumcision has long been thought of to be more healthy and more sanitary (which it actually is in many cases). The medical community has done much more in regards to pushing for circumcision than religion ever has, so this it not even remotely a religious issue.

Since men in general are more at risk to get HIV/AIDS than females and HIV/AIDS can not be cured while breast cancer can, I would think that the logical decision would be to do whatever it takes to reduce the risks.

Actually, it’s 72@ of men who were HIV+ were Muslim, while only 60@ of the population in general is Muslim, and Muslims circumcise their boys while none of the other major social groups in Malaysia do. And that’s only a population comparison: on an individucal basis, in at least six African countries, more of the circumcised men have HIV than the intact. Until that is explained, cutting men and boys to prevent HIV is madness.

It was not limited to the 1980’s.
A lifetime on antivirals and other meds is no picnic for guys with HIV. There are early reports of nasty long term effects from the constant antiviral drug use.
All this being said, I think that in the USA, there are much better ways to prevent AIDS than by circumcision. Probably the great majority of US gay male AIDS related deaths have been circumcised guys. Small hidden ulcerations under the foreskin are a mode of infection and transmission. Condom use, know your partner, more oral sex, and booze moderation are all great practices to reduce the chances of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Don’t use “club drugs”. Repeated non HIV infections make some guys more vulnerable to contracting HIV.

It’s true. Tattoos and prince alberts would be mutilation as well. However, notice that not all of these can be done to a child without any ramifications. Notice that doctors aren’t performing tattoos and prince alberts to prevent AIDS.

If reports are correct, at least 117 children die a year due to circumcision. These numbers are conservative because doctors who want to keep their reputations and keep making money from this often attribute the death to something else, such as “hemmoraging” or “septic shock.”

Circumcision doesn’t prevent HIV in Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, and Swaziland, not to mention Israel and America.
The rate of circumcised men in this country was at 90% during the 1980s, when the HIV/AIDS epidemic hit. It is still at about 80%, and yet we still manage to have the highest rate of HIV transmission in the industrialized world. Some cities, such as Philadelphia and Washington DC rival hotspots in Africa.
“Researchers” and circumcision pundits can make all the claims and “studies” they want, however they fail to correlate with reality.
On July 7th this year, Malaysian AIDS Council vice-president Datuk Zaman Khan announced that than 70% of the 87,710 HIV/AIDS sufferers in the country are Muslims (all Muslim men are circumcised). The Muslim population accounts for 70% of the incidence of HIV, but only 60% of the population, which would mean that HIV is spreading at a much higher rate in the Muslim population, where all men are circumcised.
Let’s have “studies” explain this one.
Cumming is right on the money. Circumcision doesn’t do diddly-squat to protect anyone. The procedure costs money in and of itself, but it’s going cost even MORE money, because promoting circumcision as HIV “prevention” is already causing men to become complacent about condom use. The Wawer study showed that women in Africa were 50% more likely to contract HIV from a circumcised partner. As men use less condoms they will get infected and infect others, resulting in more HIV cases on which money for drugs will have to be spent on.
Promoting circumcision is the biggest disservice to the fight against HIV. What a waste of precious funds.

It’s important that we not argue with the victims here who slag off the Brits, and support child abuse. They know not of what they think. They are living in their heads and not their hearts. We could feel sorry for them in the fact that they are damaged people who need love and understanding. Deep down, they know that male genital mutilation is wrong. We have to realise their denial, a common symptom of the sexually abused used to validate the cycle of future abuse, and psychologically justify it.

@Lee: It isn’t really known how many babies die each year from “circumcision”, but the truth is they have, do, and will die. This issue isn’t just about the adult victims, it’s about the big picture concerning the corrupt nature of “circumcision” itself. It’s about preserving the choice of the men that babies will become. It’s about exposing the fact that interns learn this procedure not on dead babies, but on live ones. They often make mistakes some of which cannot be corrected. Each time a parent allows this, regardless of having been informed or not, another person is going to grow up a potential enabler of “circumcision”. That’s how the quack doctors who do this stay in business.
If any of the naysayers here are to actually see an infant being tortured during the travesty, they might change their minds. If not, there is something wrong with them. Can’t they think of anything other than their own feelings and consider those of others? Since “circumcision” can’t really be reversed, we need leave the penis as formed. That person, not object, may want to keep it just that way regardless as to how it makes anyone feel. The intact penis has been around in the majority for thousands of years, and it will be in the majority long after the naysayers are gone.

@@Acem.: : You know you call it just a cosmetic procedure but its not it is mutilation and the source for this fact is simple the world health organization and many countries consider even a single pin prick of a girl’s genitals to bring a single drop to blood to be female genital mutilation and since male circumcision is the tearing away of the foreskin from the glans because they are fused, along with the crushing of the foreskin and the cutting away of the foreskin it is very clear by using logic that male circumcision for non-medically justifiable reason is also mutilation.

I agree that the regulation seems silly; it’s been proven that circumcision doesn’t effectively prevent the spread of STI’s. Of course Alan Cumming would be the first person to speak out against it, lol. He also helped compose a music video about same-sex marriages recently.
