Douglass Spady, the alleged suspect

It was like a scene out of a horror movie. What started as a one-night fling quickly turned into a violent and degrading sexual assault.

In April, a 34-year-old Canadian man, who was in Philly for a work conference and whose name has not been released, invited another man over to his room at the Hilton Hotel. The two had met on Grindr. When the suspect arrived, he pulled out a gun. Then he forced the man onto the bed and raped him.

“The whole thing was just a giant blur,” the 34-year-old told media at the time. “I was scared and I kept thinking if i just do what he says, then he’ll just go away.”

After the rape, the suspect then made the victim buy four $500 Visa gift cards, then walked him to five nearby ATMs and told to withdraw $200 from each machine. In total, the suspect walked away with $3,000.

“I was afraid to say anything. I was afraid of what was going to happen,” the victim said.

Now, the suspect has been caught.

26-year-old Douglass Spady was been arrested in Florida on June 7. He was extradited back to Philly over the weekend.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has charged Spady with indecent deviant sexual intercourse, sexual assault, robbery, kidnapping for ransom, theft, unlawful restraint, terroristic threats, false imprisonment, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Spady was arraigned on Sunday. Bail was set at $1 million. His next court date is scheduled for June 26, 2014.
