It was like a scene out of a horror movie. What started as a one-night fling quickly turned into a violent and degrading sexual assault.
In April, a 34-year-old Canadian man, who was in Philly for a work conference and whose name has not been released, invited another man over to his room at the Hilton Hotel. The two had met on Grindr. When the suspect arrived, he pulled out a gun. Then he forced the man onto the bed and raped him.
“The whole thing was just a giant blur,” the 34-year-old told media at the time. “I was scared and I kept thinking if i just do what he says, then he’ll just go away.”
After the rape, the suspect then made the victim buy four $500 Visa gift cards, then walked him to five nearby ATMs and told to withdraw $200 from each machine. In total, the suspect walked away with $3,000.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“I was afraid to say anything. I was afraid of what was going to happen,” the victim said.
Now, the suspect has been caught.
26-year-old Douglass Spady was been arrested in Florida on June 7. He was extradited back to Philly over the weekend.
The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has charged Spady with indecent deviant sexual intercourse, sexual assault, robbery, kidnapping for ransom, theft, unlawful restraint, terroristic threats, false imprisonment, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
Spady was arraigned on Sunday. Bail was set at $1 million. His next court date is scheduled for June 26, 2014.

Scarey. I think cruising a bar is safer, but I have no evidence of that.

Another horror story with Grindr in the starring role. Never had any trouble with guys from dating apps/sites but now I’m kinda rethinking this. I hope this scumbag gets what he deserves.
Spike
I recall an episode for Six Feet Under that was very similar to this, the only difference was it was long before Grinder and he hooked up with that guy at a while filling his car with gas.
While random hooks ups have a hot factor when they go right, when they go wrong, they go horribly wrong. I bet this happens more often then reported do to the stigma and less then sympathetic law enforcement homophobes.

It’s considered safer to go to the other guy’s place — gruesome thought, but if he killed you he’d have to worry about disposing of the body. If you invite him over, he can do his worst and then just walk away.
That said, if you must hook up with a stranger, ALWAYS alert a friend where you’re going.

i think i’d be more worried about aids than the money.

@Spike: In “Six Feet Under”, David was kidnapped by a psychotic, homophobic hitchhiker.

He sure going to love it in prison, for the next few good years with a good few men.

“indecent deviant sexual intercourse” What is that? If a woman were raped by a man would they charge the perp with this same crime?

For those who don’t know, Philly is a very rough city; has been for at least 50 years. It does teach you how to spot trouble and how to handle it when necessary, though.
