With Sarah Palin again unwilling to address CPAC this year, the honor of deliverying the conference’s keynote fell to Ann Coulter, frenemy to the gays. (Well, she was the opener for Allen West.) This woman, who takes credit for GOProud dropping any semblance of supporting same-sex marriage (“it’s a state’s issue,” Christopher Barron will whine), went after The Left for destroying the family and religion for “making up this gay marriage thing” and making anyone opposed to it a “homophobe.” Oh Ann, I wish you would go on and on. Which you do!
“There is something to being gay apart from the sodomy,” says Coulter. “This is why I get along with gays. We like the same music, the same cocktails, often the same men.” But when conservatives attack gays, they are letting “the left co-opt gays. … Gays are natural conservatives.’
IE
Who cares what this horse-faced nag thinks about anything?
Gigi
And Coulter’s a natural C-U-Next-Tuesday!
Ian
She’s living in a CONservative universe, with the exception of waspish stepford gay men who grew up in rich republican household compounds, the natural inclination of the majority of us who are LGBT is to be liberally minded. As long as what you are doing doesn’t harm yourself or someone else I say GO for it!
Soupy
She only loves gays who are her acolytes. The Men who decorate her homes and such.
christopher di spirito
It’s interesting to me that this gutter heffa has made a career of insulting “teh gays” and people like Christopher Barron and Dan Choi cheer her on.
Whatevah…..
Harbo
Sorry Ann, but you’re full of shit – (surprise, surprise) – but I’m gay and definitely NOT a conservative, natural or unnatural. You’ll say anything to get attention. I grew up a liberal, have always been a liberal and always will be a liberal. Reagan was a doddering old fool who had no idea what the fuck was going on around him and I never voted for Bush (father or son) and proud of that fact. You are the absolute scum of the earth and will do anything for a buck.
Sean
Oh look, someone who built her career on lies continues to blather on. How tiresome.
TheRealAdam
Why all the hate against Ann? Obviously she has a pull on certain gays who buy in to her logic. Perhaps she wants gays to have “barefoot and pregnant” status in conservative parties, but at least she is acknowledging them and welcoming(?) them.
And @christopher di spirito: Plenty of liberals have also made careers insulting gays and other minorities, it just usually flies under the radar because their politics happen to be liberal and pro-gay. However, being liberal does not in any way free a person from personal prejudices – and liberals have plenty of those, just like conservatives.
Yuki
There is something to being gay apart from the sodomy,” says Coulter. “This is why I get along with gays. We like the same music, the same cocktails, often the same men.”
Guess I’ve been doing it wrong. Here I thought being gay simply meant I like men. Oopsie.
Owen
@TheRealAdam: Yes, we all have our prejudices. I, a gay man, can think awful homophobic thoughts at times. As well as awful racial thoughts at times. But the difference is I don’t act on them. I KNOW they are wrong. I do not infest an entire political party with the power to validate those prejudices. I’m sure there are many liberals who are like me, probably most of the people who read Queerty and watch MSNBC and hate Fox News. The difference is we squash those prejudices down as best we can. We don’t hide behind religion to justify our hate. We don’t hide behind a “Tea Party” that has its roots in racism and fear. Conservatives can’t control their hate, simple as that. And since they cannot control they must justify it. I guarantee you Liberals are nothing like Conservatives.
CampusRadical
Well I can say from experience Ann is not a friend of the gays. I grew up in a college town and when I was 15 she came to give a lecture. There was a question and answer session after her talk and I asked an (admittedly sort of stupid) question. She answered, swear to god, “Sit down and shut up you little gay boy” and then they cut my microphone before I could respond. The audience (which was pretty evenly divided between conservatives and liberal) exploded. The whole thing was surreal.
Jeffree
@Owen: That was one of the most honest & truest comments I’ve read in a long time. Thanks !
jason
Ann Coulter is correct about the Left trying to co-opt the gays. It’s how the Left operates – by establishing a coalition of interests. What we – as gay people – should be doing is telling both the Left and Right that we are not to be taken for granted. If you want our vote, you need to earn it.
As for what the Left has done for us gays, OK, it’s fair to say that it has been better than the Right. However, how much better? My view is that we’ve had 50 years of the Left-inspired sexual revolution and all we got was an acceptance based on segregation. At the social level, male-male sexuality is still segregated from the mainstream thanks to Leftist homophobia.
You only have to look at the social elements of our society – the bisexual double standard, for instance. This is where male-male sexuality is made smaller by confining it to the “gay” concept. This enables Leftists to reduce the visibility of male-male sexuality in the mainstream.
Leftists are also sexist in that they promote female nudity far more than male nudity. They also embrace female bisexuality whereas the same can’t be said about male bisexuality.

@Soupy: “She only loves gays who are her acolytes. The Men who decorate her homes and such.”
No different than any other hag, including Madonna and her clone. Seriously, if Ann was a flamboyant pop star, half the gays would be worshipping at her feet.
TwlightoftheDogs
@jason: Your comment is nonsensical. First you say the left is a coalition of interest, and, then you say that we should respond to the fact that the left wants to include us a part of the coalition of interest by telling them we won’t be taken for granted by being a part of a coalition of interest. So we will aid those who will harm us. Huh? Maybe you meant something different. As it reads right now, its nonsensical.
SouthSideShorty
@Owen: How I love it when the angry Left puts its hypocritical foot in its hypocritical mouth time and time again. Laughably, you make the statement “Conservatives can’t control their hate, simple as that” on a webpage deluged with the hateful rantings of liberals. Ironic? Hardly. Just—sorry, but I gotta say it again—hypocritical.
TheRealAdam
@Owen: I agree with your overall premise about political parties.
I only meant to suggest that liberal politics do not remove personal prejudices. We’re just taught to be PC about our differences under a cover of progressiveness. If you remove the cover of open-minded liberalness, you’ll find that conservatives aren’t really that different from liberals. How we interact in day-to-day life with each other, and form relationships, and regard others, would suggest something way different, so I disagree with the idea that liberals are nothing like conservatives. As you’ve said, liberals are just forced to “know better” and not legislate their prejudices, or even voice them.
I really don’t think that you (or I) “know better,” we just know what to say and what not to say in order to keep up the cloak of progressiveness, toward an ideal. It’s a sham, if anything. Conservatives, for better or worse, know it’s a sham. At least they’re honest about it.
@Kev C: Precisely.
TheRealAdam
@SouthSideShorty: Yes, it is, which was the point I was trying to make. But his point about politics and government, I agree with, if only for the fact that it saves face.
christopher di spirito
@TheRealAdam: Gee, TheRealAdam, did you read that in a fortune cookie?
justiceontherocks
@TheRealAdam: Who needs Mr. Ed to “acknowledge and welcome” us? I don’t need a mean-spirited ignorant person to acknowledge me. She’d be lucky if i acknowledged her.
I will never understand why anyone give a rat’s behind what this 70-IQ moron thinks about anything.
SouthSideShorty
@TheRealAdam: I got your point, but my regret is that most gay men tow the liberal line because to do otherwise is to be ostracized by your peers. My conservative friends accept my sexuality much more easily than my gay friends accept my conservatism—believe it. If I’m a “self-hater” for being a conservative gay man, then all of the rich, white, heterosexual males who pour money into liberal causes must also likewise be “self-haters,” because the Left loves to hate those straight rich white guys.
TheRealAdam
@christopher di spirito: You do nothing to contribute to the dialogue.
@justiceontherocks: I think it’s easy to belittle her because she is a conservative and apparently against gays. But Ann Coulter is a smart woman, whether we like it or not. Perhaps your comments on IQ would be better directed at Lady Gaga or Katy Perry?
And I am not saying we need her, but the fact that this kind of dialogue is actually happening in conservative circles is something to be thankful for, IMO.
TheRealAdam
@SouthSideShorty: I agree with you, including your point about your conservative friends’ acceptance.
GoNorth
I have to disagree with her. I think homosexual men are as varied as anyone, and that way because they develop it naturally, not by being influenced by other groups. They’ve ranged from Ernst Roehm to Allen Ginsburg and all types in between. And lots of gays are so naturally hardcore-left wing they’d kill their enemies at a rate that made Stalin look like an amateur.
Chris
Oh fuck off coulter, I’m so left I cant even turn right.

Enough already. It seems as though this thread has been co-opted. What’s with all the back and forth. Coulter says things to be provocative, and it looks as though it’s MISSION ACCOMPLISHED once again. She called 9/11 widows harlots, harpies and money-grubbing whores. She said that Muslims shouldn’t be allowed on airplanes – they should take “flying carpets” instead. And she said that “Liberals are attempting to teach kindergarteners about ‘fisting.'” The “gay community” is just as diverse as the straight community. We’ve got Christians and atheists, we’re got liberals and socialists and yes, we even have conservatives. I really don’t believe that we’re as divided as she or “they” would lead us to believe. I would have a modicum of respect for Coulter’s comments if she didn’t come off as being a thinly-veiled, nasty provocateur. GOProud can have her!
reason
@TheRealAdam: If you really believe that progressiveness is just a cloak for underlying hatred, you are sorely mislead. Everyone doesn’t hold the prejudices that you do, I feel sorry for you, to hold all that hate. Rip that “cloak” off and you will find fundamentally different people. You become what you do, if you live your life in an accepting and open manner it is what you become.
The idea that liberals hate rich white people is ludicrous, if you look at the statistics the majority of educated rich white people are part of the democratic coalition. Even the apex of success, wall streets, sympathies are with liberal causes. The right wing coalition of white males are generally those that are dirt poor or call themselves middle-class but haven’t really made it, they are looking for “others” to vent there failure on. Unlike their liberal counterparts they haven’t learned that cash doesn’t define success. You become rich by treating others fairly, protecting the health and environment that other people share, trying to make this a better world for everybody.
greenmanTN
Ann Coulter doesn’t like political correctness? Ok, Fine. She’s a fucking attention-whore whose bloody murder would only improve the world.
How’s that for unvarnished truth, Ann?
GoNorth
GreenManTN : I think she already knows liberals are into that, so..
GoNorth
The only thing I WILL admit that Coulter is right about is that in most gay ghettos they try to push their values on younger gays and newcomers. If you move into the gay ghetto in NYC, for instance, you HAVE to follow the “rules” (hate Israel, love the Palestinians, hate Republicans, love Lady Gaga..) or you’ll be, in a sense, “rejected” by the community. But, in fairness, I think Right Wingers and Conservatives, gay and straight, might try to push their values too. Fortunately younger guys, gays included, seem to have a tendency to make up their own minds these days and give the middle finger to any of the gay cliques that say “Think like us or else..”
Soupy
Coulter is notorious for calling John Edwards a “faggot”. Wrong again.
GoNorth
Soupy : In the high school sense of “faggot”, meaning a weak wuss, John Edwards most certainly is one.
Patsy Stoned
The worst thing GOProud ever did was drag this bleached, rotting skeleton out of whatever coffin it was in and prop it up to give it (and themselves) attention. The fact that those idiots paid that walking biotoxin to insult them to their faces tells me all I need to know about them.
Stephanie
The difficulty with Ann Coulter is that she makes a living off being sensational. There are some tidbits of substance but most it goes unheard in her complete fanaticism towards the right. While, there is a strong case to be made that liberal Democrats do not push steadfast for LGBT rights, they still are more favorable to the queer community. The problem with GOProud is that they will never see itself as an innate proponent for LGBT rights but rather a convergence between conservatism and being a gay individual. I’m all for a variety of perspectives and different approaches to achieving equality but not in joining organizations like GOProud that will generate more harm than good for the gay community.
Soupy
Yes, GoNorth. And Coulter has the sensibilities and maturity of a particularly nasty high school girl. I love to watch her shut down and storm out of interviews where she can’t defend herself. Love the clip of the CBC humiliating her:

I tried to “translate” this article into English using the button at the bottom of the article. It didn’t work.

Some of you may recall the 2005 Time Magazine cover story about Coulter. After reading it, I was pretty much convinced that she does not believe in over 50% of what she spouts.
As some folks have already mentioned, she does it all for attention. Which in turn brings in the money.
She is an Ivy League graduate, yet has spouted insanities such as “We don’t have to take care of the environment. God gave us this great green Earth to rape and pillage and use up any way we can.” (paraphrase)
She’s an amoral wh#re, shucking and jiving just to stay in the limelight. She doesn’t care about the social ramifications of her actions. How sad and irresponsible. She has no credibility among the sane. Where is the “off” button? If I never see her name in another headline, it’ll be too soon.
Gregger
This insane excuse for a human Can’t Understand Normal Thoughts. Stop paying her any attention. She lives for it.

@Rick Gold: wow. you can cut AND paste you lame twats, or tweets-whatever. you are smarter than the average conservative! 😉
Cam
The one thing that facisnated me was that you had somebody like Coulter, at CPAC saying that gays should be part of the conservative movement and she was being applauded.
I didn’t like a lot of what she said about marriage, but I have to admit, hearing the applause when she is saying the GOP needs to include gays was shocking to me. hell, let her keep talking if it will cause a rift and send the evangelical gay haters out to Siberia in that party.
hephaestion
Ann Coulter has built her fortune on spreading hatred of gays. And now suddenly she’s our friend? I don’t think so. She’s just learned that there’s more money to be made in befriending us, I suppose. But no way in hell will I forgive her 20 years of ridiculing gays.
Soupy
You have to be self loathing, submissive, and know your place in the hierarchy if you want to be Coulter’s friend. Or a gay republican for that matter.
DR
@Cam:
There was a lot more that it sounded like she wanted to say, but didn’t.
Although if she really wants to be genuine, she’d speak more like a lawyer and less like a daytime TV show hostess. She has a degree from Cornell in history and a JD from U.Mich and has clerked in the 8th Circuit and worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee. She is a very intelligent woman, I wish she’d be less about the sensationalism and more about the smarts.
Sadly I think she’s succumbed to the money.
Soupy
No, she succumbed to her own ego years ago. Her and Glenn Beck are comparable hysterics.
the crustybastard
Know what else is a “conservative value”? Providing for one’s family.
This is commonly accomplished by having access to the special rights granted to married persons under the law, such as family insurance, beneficial tax rates, surviving spouse social security benefits and access to pensions, automatic survivorship presumptions with regard to real estate and other intestate succession guarantees, etc.
Without these benefits, when one partner becomes unhealthy or dies, the other can end up on welfare or bankrupt — which conservatives just hate.
But apparently not as much as they hate the idea of gay Americans permanently committing to take personal and financial responsibility for their partners.
whatever
@DR: So you’re saying she dumbed herself down for a conservative audience? That doesn’t speak to well of herself and even worse for conservatives as a whole.
Kieran
Well she’s definitely right about one thing, she’s certainly not without sin. Ann admits she’s a sinner. That’s a step forward and something many self-righteous social conservatives would refuse to acknowledge.
buttholez
i take it back this isn’t hot…
Little Kiwi
that’s the stupidest fucking thing i’ve ever heard.
Little Kiwi
then why is it that those of us gays with “leftist” families and communities are actually loved, accepted and understood while gay “rightists” can only win their families’ “tolerance” by being anti-gay themselves and cutting off their own balls?
i wasn’t “co-opted” by the left. they’re the ones who’ve never once given me shit for being gay.
wise up, Ann.
