Arizona Governor Approves ‘Look Like an Immigrant’ Harassment Law

Though immigration enforcement is a federal matter, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer just approved state lawmakers’ bill making it a state crime to be in Arizona illegally, and giving police the right to question anyone about their legal status if they look, act, or give off the pheromones of an illegal immigrant. Yeah, this baby’s going to court. [American Progress]

The Arizona law is teh lateest example of the kind of racist garbage used to cover the superexploitation of immigrant exploited workers.

The political leaders of both the Democrats and the Republicans have similar racist approaches and it all boils down to easing immigrnats entry into a doubly exploited layer of workers while denying them the rights (such as they are) that other workers have.

Corporations of all kinds arrange for the transport of immigrant and imported workers from border areas, pay them substandard wages and benefits and fire them when they demand more.

      1. Immigrant and imported workers, like all working people, should be protected by US labor laws, paid at trade union rates, encouraged to join trade unions, and treated in all respects as citizens including access to medical care.

      2. They should have the right of dual citizenship and the right to vote here and in their country of origin.

      3. The racist posse’s on the border should be disbanded by force and their members indicted as terrorists.

Leaders of the Democrats and Republicans can’t be expected to get past their own racism.

The best way to combat corporate and political racism can be seen in the work being done in various places to revive El Partido Nacional de La Raza Unida, an independent political party that sprang into life in Texas, Colorado, California and elsewhere during the last radicalization in the early 1970’s. reenergized

The strategy of ‘working though’ the Democrat or Republican parties is a loser’s strategy for immigrant and imported workers and for us.

Agreed for the most part Bill. But please cut this “I’m objective because I rag on both parties” crap. The Democrats are not racists…they embrace immigrants, always have (the Irish, Jews & Italians were so despised by the Republicans even back in the 19th century when they first came en masse that they joined the Democrats even though the Dems were mostly a Southern Party then). The Republicans are keeping the tradition alive by ragging on Mexicans now which is why Hispanics have moved wholesale into the Dem Party. Both parties are not EQUALLY culpable, despite your almost psychotic need to make it so on every fucking issue.

I for one am happy about this law being signed. There is a HUGE difference between leagl immigration and Illegal Immigration. Thes people broke the law, they are not American citizens, do not have a right to our Health care, should not be able to get driver licenses (they are criminals) and should NOT be able to vote.

I am sick of people and espcially the gay sheeple who think this is RACIST..this is NOT RACIST…MEXICAN IS NOT A RACE!!! Idiots.

@james_cambridge: Anything less than full rights for immigrant and imported Latino workers is an endorsement of their superexploitation.

The ugly racism of both parties is expressed as the denial of basic rights, social services, drivers licenses and health care. Obama is a sick racist for insisting on the denial of health care for millions, and if enforced it’ll put us all in danger. Anyone who says it’s not racsim is an apologist or delusional.

“Hispanics have moved wholesale into the Dem Party.” So?

So did a lot of antiwar groups, trade unions, LGBT groups and others. They were fooled by Obama, who got huge contributions from Goldman Sachs and the rest of the looter rich who much prefer working with Democrats like Obama and the Clintons – they’re greedier, they fool more people and they’re able to get away with a lot more than Republicans.

Which proves that P. T. Barnum nailed it when he said “you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time…” but when he added “you can’t fool all of the people all of the time” he accurately described what’s happening to both racist parties, particularly to the Democrat party.

@Ethan: you don’t have a clue how disgusting you sound. Go back to your sewer.

@Bill Perdue…your argument doesnt hold water. The vast majority of Illegal Immigrants that this bill targets are from Mexico. Being against Illegal Immigration is not Racist. Your just yelling at the wind and not helping anyone with your crazy rantings. If someone from Mexico wants to come here legally fine, great, lets do it.
But just to blanketley yell RACIST, when Mexican isnt even a race, then trying to reduce those who blieve differently than you to sociopathic troglodytes is sort of like the little kid on the block who is spoiled and not getting his way so he resorts to name calling…

@Bill Perdue: The clarity of ethnicity/race is as clear as mud- you mistake a Puerto Rican for a Mexican in some cases, you may offend them; in addition, what about a person from the Dominican Republic? They’re black that speak Spanish-they’re not African American. I see it like gay people denying bisexuals not existing or haven’t completely made up their mind.

It’s an unfair profile and assumption without getting to know the person, as Ethan ASSumes illegals come here with no other priority but to break laws, not to make a better future for their family. By the way, these illegals pay into our social security system and won’t see a dime; in addition, I’m sure they raise the children of many self-important politicians scapegoating them, but I’m sure their children will remember who really raised them. Ethan, you have personal issues, beyond a chat board- seek help, pal.

@TonyD…That was a very nice response with out resorting to name calling, but…Your argument also is flawed. The Illegal immigrant may come here for a better life but there is a legal way to do this. I am sorry they pay into social security with an illegally obtained SSN and do not reap the benfits later on, but again what they are doing is illegal. The problem lies with there government not ours. They should be sent back to there country of origin and their government charged for shipping and handling (haha could’nt resist- don’t yell).

They’re country of origin is the problem, Mexico should look to itself to try to help it’s people so they don’t risk their lives trying to get over here…

In terms of race, it’s an unscientific idea. There are no races.

The very act of being preoccupied with ‘race’ by ignorant, sociopathic troglodytes like Ethan is racist. The Nazis and the KKK were also mesmerized by ‘race’ and it inevitably led to horrific violence.

Really is to bad, the party of Gen Powell, Pres. H.W. Bush, James Baker and all of the intellectual conservatives has died. Now tyrannical half-wits like Sarah Palin are in the drivers seat depositing smoldering heaps of rubber as they careens through the fabric of America. I always felt the greatness of this country was our ability to move forward and heal old wounds no matter how detestable some actions in our history have been. Before you know it the same hatred that lead to the use of prussic acid on humans in Germany 1941 is bubbling up here in America. 1/4 of the people calling an elected officials office were spouting out slurs against Hispanics, really is this about illegal immigration or for people to express hatred that has taken over their very being? I wonder how many of the 3/4 had things on their minds that they were just to afraid to say out loud? I am all for securing the border, but there is something much more insidious at play here. Everyone knows darn well that people are going to be staring at every Hispanic with contempt, some cops will be pulling them over and harassing them because they have been given a green light to do so. Lets trample all over the lives of good Americans because were to lazy to secure our border, as much as this country bashes words like communism, with this new law were ripping a page out of North Korea’s manual.

To add to my comment: The vast majority of the Illegals are good people as well who are searching for better lives, I cannot fault them for that nor will I condemn them with foul language. How many of us would not swim across the gulf if it meant providing a better life for our kids, I know my parents in those circumstances would have done just about anything to give me a better life. I am for securing the border because I know darn well the country can’t afford such huge influxes of people in need. We are a country of Immigrants, besides American Indians, and will continue to be: in order to sustain this country we need a formula that will allow people to come here that will not disrupt the many levers that keep this country in balance. The illegals that are here? I haven’t made up my mind yet, I would have hopped an intelligent debate would ensue, but that is doubtful in this atmosphere. One thing is for sure, I will not stand by quietly while people bully Hispanic Americans or abuse other Humans regardless if their illegal.

@james_in_cambridge: The Democrats are most certainly racist, and Obama is a racist and a tool of racists. http://www.blackagendareport.com/

He organizes the racist mass murder of civilains from Palestine to Pakistan and he wants to eliminate health care for immigrant-imported workers.

Your ahistorical idiocy that “They passed civil right law after law knowing it would lose them the South in the 60’s & yet they are the racists… is a bald faced lie.

LBJ, like JFK opposed substantive civil rights changes until it became clear that concessions were necessary. They were both leaders of the Democrat-Dixiecrat coalition and only began breaking with Dixiecrats when civil rights and black nationalist groups starkly raised the question so eloquently expressed by Malcolm X in the slogan “the ballot or the bullet”.

LBJ advocated voting for and civil rights except for reasons of expediency.

Johnson voted time and again with other Dixiecrats against banning lynching, eliminating poll taxes and ending federal funding to segregated schools and colleges. He was a major opponent of Truman’s civil rights platform.

LBJ said that he voted against civil and voting rights bills those bills becasue they didn’t have a chance of passing. The same excuse used by Obots today when they try to sabotage pushing for our agenda. LBJ said that he was “not against black’s rights but for state’s rights”.

Amnesty, which even Bush supported, is not quite the same thing as a real anti-racist policy which consists of:

Your blind support for Obamma’s racism is part of the partisan sickenss of those who inhabit the last closet, the Democrat party.

Oh Bill. How can one person read the obvious in such a sad, incorrect way? LBJ opposed civil right reforms in the 50’s & before when he was a Senator from Texas. It almost kept him from being asked to join JFK in his run for President and earned him Bobby Kennedy’s enmity. At that time the Dems had both dixiecrat racists and black northerners in their coalition. Something had to give and when LBJ became President he could have kept resisting civil rights reforms but he DIDN’T!!! He signed them and even went further than many Liberal Democrats wanted. This is a historical fact so you’re either full of shit or you don’t know how to read. LBJ, Martin Luther King, The NAACP, FDR & Bobby Kennedy all helped give us our freedom whereas Lincoln ultimately failed us. This is a FACT; no amount of psychotic ranting on your part can change history.

In the same way Obama is anti-GLBT and a tool of the rich.

LBJ was a Dixiecrat and a racist who made concessions rather than face a revolution. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adiy075EGOs&feature=related

He continued FBI wiretaps in MLK and his administration never went after the killers of civil rights workers in the South. LBJ’s racism was expressed in the invasion and attempted occupation of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos which led to the deaths of over a million people.

Here’s LBJ trying to explain his racist mass murders to a more than skeptical MLK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVqNg1B2zP0

A few concessions on voting and accommodations were won. Any fool who thinks the US is the ‘Land of the Free” is far too deep in the closet for the light of reason to penetrate.

Is it that they’re paying to get sent back. What the fuck happened to humanity how many ilegals have died constructing houses for Americans and how many more have to? It’s cruel how border patrol kill people crossing because they thought it was an animal r u kidding? Just keep this in mind fucken borack Obama u have foreign people in ur family so fuck them too. Latinos have more rights than u think remember some of your western states weren’t American to begin with. Only latinos and native Americans should be here remember white comes from Europe and black from African descent. I think many Latin countries should take the same actions towards them so they can keep their countries safe. And then America asks why many cartels and criminal organizations kidnap their people and show no mercy just look at how many people have disappeared or have been found dead in Mexico? Not only America has balls all along its been the money that gave u power not the strength and courage to give ur faces. A lot of latinos have gone back to their countries and besides the fact of America not knowing how to manage money that is the reason economy has gone down. Just remember one of the richest man of the world is Latino. They are underestimated.

“Comprehensive immigration reform” is just a euphemism for amnesty for illegal aliens. That’s all it is. In Arizona, where the problem of illegals has reached crisis proportions, the citizens there have taken action in the opposite direction. Through their elected representatives. The governor, following the expressed wishes of something like 62% of Arizona residents — including legal Mexican-Americans — signed the legislation instead of vetoing it, which is her legal and state constitutional right.

How is this fascism? It sounds like constitutional representative democracy to me.

Also to everyone who is upset by this law…If you or I go to any other counrty don’t we have to have “Papers” Proof of why we are there? I can’t just go to Canada,France,Brazil, or even Mexico without papers. If I am there Illegally and caught I would be deported back to the US, even if I was tyring to make a better life for myself…

I’m not sure many of you who are against this law understand this…this isnt racist or anti Mexican – My husband is half mexican from AZ and is for this. His family came here the right way long ago. Im Of Irish descent but don’t think Irish people should come over here illegally..I don’t understand sometimes…

@Ethan: @Ethan: People who support this law are racists.

It’s too bad if racists don’t like being called racists.

@Bill Perdue…I’m asking an honest question…what Race? Serioulsy can’t you see the flaw in your arguement? I’m against Illegal Immigration… not against mexicans…

There are tons of Mexican-Americans who are against Illegal Immigration are they racist as well?

@Ethan: And I’m giving you an honest answer to your dishonest question.

There are no races in a scientific sense.

Although races don’t exist racism does.

Anti-black racism in its modern form was the invention of pre-Revolutionary Southern preachers as a defense for slavery. It’s one of the most durable and intractable form of bigotry in the US. Racism can be based on skin color and other superficial features or on ethnicity as it is in the case of immigrant and imported workers in the US or as it’s used by zionists against Palestinians or by colonists in English occupied Northern Ireland.

And there are racists. Racist are those who support bills like this to discriminate against working people based on where they come from.

Racists work to divide working people and pit them against each other, a tactic that the looter rich readily appreciate. It helps them bust unions. It leads to pay inequality and workplace discrimination.

You’re one of them. That’s contemptible. Too bad if that makes you uncomfortable.

@Bill Perdue… Im so not uncomfortable, Im just trying to get a straight answer from you – which you refuse to give.

You say “Racist are those who support bills like this to discriminate against working people based on where they come from” That’s not what I’m doing, I am discrimnating against people who came here illegally…you refuse to acknowledge that…why?

We don’t have open borders in this country, we have laws which illegal aliens have refused to acknowledge then want a free pass, i’m sorry they should’nt get it. You Bill are the one making it about Race(albeit a made up one), you Bill are refusing to acknowledge that Illegal Immigrants are exaclty that Illegally here – regardless of what their country of orign is, the color of their skin, their gender or their sexual orientation…

The new law being discussed, is about what a person looks like. If one has certain features, that person can be asked to show papers.

This is a proper time to start a discussion about removing ALL questions on the Census Forms about one’s race. “Race” has nothing to do with counting this country’s population.

I’m American Indian. In the year that I’ve been living in Arizona I’ve had two experiences of euro-american women coming up to me while I was quietly listening to NPR,to ask me if I spoke English. I’ve never had that happen in a lifetime of living in Seattle or San Francisco.

I’m terrified at the idea of being stopped by the extremely racist law enforcement officials in this area, demanding proof that I’m an American citizen.

@Ethan: If you comfortable in your racist skin thats your problem.

Your hypocrisy is as rancid as your racism.

You’ve never commented on the illegality of the war or never said you were angry because only one or two members of the looter class who wrecked our economy will spend time behind bars.

All you’re interested in is the ‘illegality’ of poor working people driven here by NAFTAs degradation of their economies and environment.

Why not raise an alarm about the White House and Pentagon war criminals and the looter rich being free to walk the streets. Oh no. Instead you want us to concentrate on persecuting our ‘real’ enemies; working people making the minimum wage or less without benefits who face a daily onslaught of racism.

We have to be on the side of working people and not the rich. It’s a principle.

I am sorry but I gotta support this bill. Too many of these illegals are gang members who are not exactaly the types to fly the rainbow flags. While there are going to be abuses, the real targets are the gang members who are basically taking over some neighborhoods. I have friends in Huntington on Long Island who recently adopted a kid. The area next to the school is so overrun with gangs and the Police are so powerless to control them, that they are considering actually closing the school. the gang members Patrons of a local Gay bar have been bashed by gang members as an initiation ritual. Majority of them who are caught and arrested are here illegally.

Sure there are those who come here for a better life, but we as a Gay community have enough demons who wish harm on us and our famlies. If there is a group who are targeting us and there is a way to have them removed from the equasion we should support it………….

Do China, Brazil, France, etc. have the 4th Amendment to the constitution? I don’t think so. State laws in the US have to comport with the constitution.

And yes, every country asks for documentation at the port of entry, but once you are already in the country, the AZ law states that you must provide documentation if an officer has “reasonable suspicion” you are in the country illegally. Also, the law allows for warrantless arrests.

And you say you’re of Irish descent. Even to this day there are tens of thousands of illegal Irish immigrants is this country. If Mary O’Brien, who is illegal, were in AZ and Ricardo Diaz, an American citizen were there to, whom do think the authorities are more likely to stop and ask for papers under this new law?

@Giovannidude: Teabagger idiot. It’s funny how you morons conflate majority rule with constitutionality. Just because a majority of people support of law, it can still violate the constitution. It’s clearly violative of the 4th amendment and Congress’ plenary power with respect to setting immigration law.

It’s funny how you simps think that the health care law in which the government bans insurance companies from denying coverage based on preexisting conditions is tyranny, but a “show me your papers with no probable” cause law us freedumb. God, you people are sick.

And don’t forget, St. Ronnie signed amnesty in 1986 and GWB tried again in 2007. :)

Everytime one group of people has attempted to round up and move another group of people, it has turned out badly:

      1. America’s time with Slavery
      2. Trail of Tears and other incidents of oppression of Native American peoples.
      3. The Holocaust
      4. Armenian Genocide
      5. Apartheid

Yeah, this will go REAL well.

The bigots don’t even realize how they are being bigots. These are the same people who will whine about a police state, and then they don’t see how requiring people of color to carry papers around (regardless of citizenship) proving they belong here is wrong. Hint: It is because in your mind- we aren’t citizens. Just like when Katrina happened, they kept referring to people of color out of NOLA as refugees. We are not Americans in your mind. Thus, you doesn’t occur to you that this is inclusive of American citizens. You are discussing illegal immigrants. But what if we aren’t illegal immigrants?

@reason. I wouldn’t mind Mexico going to war with the united states. If u haven’t been able to control the so called “terrorists” wat makes u think they will bow down to this country at this point of revolution. It seems ur big head is filled with shit that makes u think this country has the same balls it had back in the day of the American revolution. Don’t compare rifles with AK-47s. Haha. Man I’m just hoping one day u go to a country and not b accepted because of the way u look and ur traditions. I’m not 100% for violence but when it comes to dignity I would do just about anything. Oh n another fact thanks to those terrorists in Mexico ur crack head fellow Americans have wat they need to survive. Ring a bell yet? Of course not cuz u only see the bad of us but not how we somehow become useful resources. Here’s a good question why do “american citizens” celebrate 5 de mayo? Or eat Mexican food? I see racists eat Mexican food and drink Mexican beer wat a bunch of hipocrits. Let’s just hope ur wosh and my desire of war would come true. I would actually join Mexican army. And to think I almost became another Hispanic to join the army to defend a country that hasn’t showed any respect to people of different race. If its only the blacks and whites who brought and helped this country then why do u have Mexicans picking fruit and vegetables? Can’t u do anything? oh wait no that’s wat u have the Hispanics asians and blacks for lol.
