The Arizona law is teh lateest example of the kind of racist garbage used to cover the superexploitation of immigrant exploited workers.
The political leaders of both the Democrats and the Republicans have similar racist approaches and it all boils down to easing immigrnats entry into a doubly exploited layer of workers while denying them the rights (such as they are) that other workers have.
Corporations of all kinds arrange for the transport of immigrant and imported workers from border areas, pay them substandard wages and benefits and fire them when they demand more.
1. Immigrant and imported workers, like all working people, should be protected by US labor laws, paid at trade union rates, encouraged to join trade unions, and treated in all respects as citizens including access to medical care.
2. They should have the right of dual citizenship and the right to vote here and in their country of origin.
3. The racist posse’s on the border should be disbanded by force and their members indicted as terrorists.
Leaders of the Democrats and Republicans can’t be expected to get past their own racism.
The best way to combat corporate and political racism can be seen in the work being done in various places to revive El Partido Nacional de La Raza Unida, an independent political party that sprang into life in Texas, Colorado, California and elsewhere during the last radicalization in the early 1970’s. reenergized

To add to my comment: The vast majority of the Illegals are good people as well who are searching for better lives, I cannot fault them for that nor will I condemn them with foul language. How many of us would not swim across the gulf if it meant providing a better life for our kids, I know my parents in those circumstances would have done just about anything to give me a better life. “Comprehensive immigration reform” is just a euphemism for amnesty for illegal aliens. That’s all it is. In Arizona, where the problem of illegals has reached crisis proportions, the citizens there have taken action in the opposite direction. Through their elected representatives. The governor, following the expressed wishes of something like 62% of Arizona residents — including legal Mexican-Americans — signed the legislation instead of vetoing it, which is her legal and state constitutional right.

The new law being discussed, is about what a person looks like. If one has certain features, that person can be asked to show papers.
This is a proper time to start a discussion about removing ALL questions on the Census Forms about one’s race. “Race” has nothing to do with counting this country’s population.

I’m American Indian. In the year that I’ve been living in Arizona I’ve had two experiences of euro-american women coming up to me while I was quietly listening to NPR,to ask me if I spoke English. I’ve never had that happen in a lifetime of living in Seattle or San Francisco.

Why not raise an alarm about the White House and Pentagon war criminals and the looter rich being free to walk the streets. Oh no. Instead you want us to concentrate on persecuting our ‘real’ enemies; working people making the minimum wage or less without benefits who face a daily onslaught of racism.

I am sorry but I gotta support this bill. Too many of these illegals are gang members who are not exactaly the types to fly the rainbow flags. While there are going to be abuses, the real targets are the gang members who are basically taking over some neighborhoods. I have friends in Huntington on Long Island who recently adopted a kid. The area next to the school is so overrun with gangs and the Police are so powerless to control them, that they are considering actually closing the school. the gang members Patrons of a local Gay bar have been bashed by gang members as an initiation ritual. Majority of them who are caught and arrested are here illegally.
Sure there are those who come here for a better life, but we as a Gay community have enough demons who wish harm on us and our famlies. If there is a group who are targeting us and there is a way to have them removed from the equasion we should support it………….

Do China, Brazil, France, etc. have the 4th Amendment to the constitution? I don’t think so. State laws in the US have to comport with the constitution.
And yes, every country asks for documentation at the port of entry, but once you are already in the country, the AZ law states that you must provide documentation if an officer has “reasonable suspicion” you are in the country illegally. Also, the law allows for warrantless arrests.
And you say you’re of Irish descent. Even to this day there are tens of thousands of illegal Irish immigrants is this country. If Mary O’Brien, who is illegal, were in AZ and Ricardo Diaz, an American citizen were there to, whom do think the authorities are more likely to stop and ask for papers under this new law?

It’s clearly violative of the 4th amendment and Congress’ plenary power with respect to setting immigration law.
