Kate Pierson, whose buoyant vocals helped lift the B52s to their status as one of the most beloved bands of the 1980s, tied the wedding knot with longtime girlfriend Monica Coleman in Hawaii last weekend. The 67-year-old singer posted the good news to her friends and fans on Facebook Tuesday and shared a few photos of her and her new wife along with the caption #itsofficial!
According to E! News: “The wedding was attended by the entire B52s band, Sia Furler and husband Erik Anders Lang were the witnesses. Sia performed the song she wrote for the couple ‘Crush Me With You Love’ on Pierson’s first solo album Guitars and Microphones and was accompanied by the famous Hawaii music group the Lim Family who serenaded the attendees during the event. Fred Schneider [fellow B52s founding member and vocalist] made the best man speech.”
Pierson, whose pioneering new wave band has been a favorite of queer music fans since its inception in Athens, Georgia during a music boom in the late ’70s that also launched REM, and is beloved for its many party-friendly anthems such as “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack” and “Roam,” also recorded solo music. Last winter she released “Mister Sister,” which she’s referred to as a trans anthem. She told HuffPo the song was “inspired by all who are transgender and LGB, multi-dimensional and still transcending. I hope it becomes a trans anthem, but it’s really meant to empower anyone who feels ‘betrayed by the mirror.'”

This was taken at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii resort on Hawaii’s Big Island. My husband and I renewed our vows at the same hotel for our 10 year anniversary last year in the same place. In fact our room was quite near the photo. That’s the Oldest volcano on the island behind then named Kohala. My husband and I loved the big island so much we bought a home here and are living our dream life out here. She’s got good taste!

Never heard of this woman or her band, but I listened to that Mister Sister song, and wow. She’s 67 and she’s got an amazing voice.

HUGE CONGRATS, Kate & Monica! Can’t believe Kate is 67, then, I have to remember my own age… Cripes! Too bad younger folks missed The B-52s, especially “Love Shack” and “Roam”, still two of my faves! Most popular music of the last 25 years has no audial ambiance.

I loved the B-52s! So glad she’s found someone and is happy! So original!
