Barbra Streisand: Celebrating 72 Years of Fierce Fabulousness

The legendary Barbra Joan Streisand turns 72 today. And, as far as we’re concerned, the diva just keeps getting better with age. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate the iconic singer/actress/director/producer/activist’s birth than by compiling some of her fiercest looks over the decades.

Scroll down to see just a few of our favs. And please join us in wishing Babs a very happy birthday!

Whadda ya mean, “Who?”. An American institution. Like her or loathe her, she got where she was before “shock” and has persevered on pure talent. The only woman with #1 albums in each of the previous 5 decades. The first female Oscar-Grammy-Tony-Emmy winner. Some very memorable roles, some not so memorable. The most number ones in the shortest time secondary only to Elvis.

I remember when she was being interviewed by Oprah talking about designing her massive house, every detail and how she hated orange and the gardner planted orange flowers outside one of her windows (Oprah: “Is he still with us?”) and Babs said she just used the power of her brain and the flowers all changed colors and Oprah just had a look like “OK. Well, you’re Barbra Streisand” and went on to something else.

Of course, Barbra has always had the reputation for the Dr Jekyl/Mr Hyde temperament: I remember when Carny Wilson was in the pop group “Wilson Phillips” and she told Rolling Stone she was out walking one day, was in Streisand’s front yard and met Babs with the “you’re my all time idol” and literally got the old person “GET OFF MY LAWN” from her.

Is that Warren Beatty in the picture where she is wearing a fur coat?

  • Snapper59

No. Warren was pretty but he never had a 60’s beehive and fringe.

A great vocalist and a lousy actress. Oh well, you can’t have everything.

@Desert Boy: Um hello, you must -really- be a boy. Try watching “Funny Girl”, Barbra won an Oscar for that one. Admittedly it was downhill from there, but it’s because Barbra’s personality is so intense and all encompassing/consuming, not good for acting chops. I thought she was a riot in “Road Trip”, so it’s hit or miss. The jury is out (still out in my book) on “Yentl” but it had an interesting premise and it helped Barbra work though her father issues (I believe her father died soon after she was born, in an case, she didn’t have a complete relationship with him). Happy Birthday Ms. Streisand! Oh my God, if only I could look so good at 72! Oyyyy!
