It must’ve been very difficult for Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin to actually record this episode of Ben & Dave’s Six Pack, because they were cocktailing on the Turks and Caicos beach the whole time. But never say these two gentleman don’t care about their audience (leave that criticism for this website), because they took very precious time away from ocean side massages to lay into — and defend! — Newsweek‘s Ramin Setoodeh.
Listen to the new podcast above, subscribe via iTunes, and check our their archives at BenDave.com. Queerty is pleased to power the Six Pack‘s Top To Bottom.

I love their podcast but I’m not sure how I feel about the position they had on Ramin. I agree with Ben that when you spend a long time on television people identify you a particular character… but that was never what Ramin said.
And maybe there’s something to the point that the gay community itself has a problem with effeminate guys… but why is that a defensible position?

I can’t help but be reminded of the MadTV sketch with Melissa Joan Hart landing in Oz and meeting Glinda the Good Witch. Glinda asked, “Ah, Sabrina the Teenage Witch! Are you a GOOD witch or a BAD witch?” to which Melissa responded, “No, I’m Melissa Joan Hart, I’m an actress!” Glinda replied, “Ahh, so are you a GOOD actress or a BAD actress?”
It all comes down do whether they’re good actors or bad actors, straight or gay.
Setoodeh’s piece was douchey, though. You’re talking about musical theatre on Broadway! Are dyed-in-the-wool heterosexuals “straight acting” on Broadway?!

These people are pathetic.

certainly no gay actor should automatically get a gay role…what happens if they suck at that too?…..
bobo
queerty, i am sending you a bill for wasting my time and exposing me to this crap-ass podcast.

@Shade: Its not. Its internalize homophobia raised to a virtue because the homophobic know what they are doing, but can’t deal with it. I equate it to an issue that was more prevalent in the African American community between the darker and lighter skin blacks. The issue there was that lighter skin blacks were considered socially better than darker skin blacks. Why? The reason should be obvious. The lighter skin blacks were closer in color and features to whites. Thus, perfectly internalizing the racism against them. The interesting thing is how long this occurred over generations and was not only tolerated, but justified as acceptable. The same is occurring here. This kind of behavior only shows up in a group that has a deep self hatred that arises out of oppression from a greater society. So African Americans they learn to discriminate in group against those perceived to be less like the majority group that’s oppressing them, and the gay person learns to oppress the members of the gay community that are perceived to be less like the straight person. In each case reinforcing the oppression. That’s how deep oppression runs. That one can find analogies in other oppressed groups doing the exact same internalized thing. It won’t change unfortunately until gays truly are accepted in greater society or gay people collectively start to say no to the internalized homophobia rather than justifying it.

@bobo: What’s so “crap-ass” about Ben and Dave? I enjoy their podcast very much. Just because they don’t try to encourage us to become drag queens or try to make us feel invalid if we don’t sleep with black men?

When does the marketing spiel end? About 15 minutes in? That’s 15 minutes too many. Sheesh.
