Cinderella will go to the ball! Billy Porter has confirmed that he is scheduled to play the role of the Fairy Godmother in an upcoming big-screen movie version of Cinderella.

The gay actor is best known for his role as Pray Tell on the TV show Pose, for which he recently scooped an Emmy. However, he has a long career in theatre and Broadway work behind him. He won a Tony for playing ‘Lola’ in Kinky Boots in 2013.

He confirmed the Cinderella casting news during a Q&A session Saturday at the New Yorker Festival, according to Deadline.

Sony’s new version of Cinderella will commence shooting in London next February. Singer Camila Cabello (“Havana”, “Señorita”) will take the title role. It’s Cabello’s first major acting role.

The movie is being co-produced by James Corden and Leo Perlman. Among the other cast members, there are rumors Idina Menzel will play the part of the evil stepmother, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Porter, 50, has recently revealed that as well as acting in the upcoming third season of Pose on FX, he will also direct an episode. He also revealed Saturday that he has signed a deal to write his memoirs.

On the same day as the Q&A, he also appeared on Saturday Night Live, in a sketch about last week’s Democratic Presidential LGBTQ town hall event.
