An actor who appeared in the smash hit Black Panther has been forced to confront his past after being exposed as a former gay adult film performer.
Atlanta-based Patrick Shumba Mutukwa was touring his home country of Zambia talking about the film when images from an adult film he starred in when he was in his 20s began circulating online.
In a statement put out by his publicist, Larissa Long of BlueRed Communications, Mutukwa took about as sex-negative a stance on his past as possible, calling it “unsavory,” an “errored decision,” and “immature behavior.”

How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
And just try and follow this next bit of logic: He also deactivated all his social media accounts because “he knows there are children engaged with him that he knows should not witness the video.”
Read the full statement below:
Recently there was an unsavory video released of Shumba Mutukwa to the Zambian public from his 20s. He was a young man that made a choice not all may agree with however, it does not change who Mr. Mutukwa is as a man, philanthropist, or actor. Mr. Mutukwa has grown and learned from his past as we all do. Although he recognizes his errored decision he does own up to the immature behavior in his past. There is nothing more he can do but continue to use his celebrity to better the country of Zambia. He temporarily closed down his social media accounts only because he knows there are children engaged with him that he knows should not witness the video. He asks that people refrain from sharing the video on social media to look out for young eyes. Again, he was a young man himself and is not the same youthful person he was. His life is dedicated to bettering others and what he did in his past has nothing to do with what he’s accomplished and will continue to accomplish. He has strong pride in Zambia and works hard to make the country and its citizens proud. That is his path and he has proven well beyond a doubt that who he is today and will be in the future. The man you’ve grown to love, not the youth that makes immature decisions. For any questions or statements on this matter please contact Mr. Mutuka’s publicist Larissa Long.
“Thank you for understanding we all make mistakes but know I will continue to bring pride to Zambia. My growth continues in everything I do from errors to successes.” -Shumba

Mutukwa then posted a poem on his Facebook account called 99 Things. He’s also been posting regularly on Facebook since the news hit, making that bit about deactivating all social media accounts for the children even more of a head-scratcher.
Here’s the poem:
99 ThingsEmptiness. It’s what fills my lungs when I inhale. My ribs constrict me, forcing my lungs to collapse. I’m…

This is the shit that most kids don’t think about. They just see the easy money.
isxios
Well, if people like us weren’t judgmental bitches about something like this, as if it has any bearing on him as an actor or a man, he wouldn’t have to now be acting like an idiot out of embarrassment.
Bromancer7
@isxios Exactly. They’re acting like he committed murder. The more scandalous they make it out to be (when it’s not scandalous at all), the more they draw attention to it. It’s just sex, something that humans have been doing for eons.
kille31
God, cant these ppl apologize without trowing others under the bus?
So he did gay porn in the past, who cares?! Just dont come with these BS arguments like “think of the children”, or im dead inside and then talk about sin and whatnot.
ChrisK
His excuse comes up like Kevin Spacey’s. Instead of Manning up to it he tries to make himself into some kind of victim of Satan which plays well with that crowd.
Good riddance to bad rubbish I say.
theowlmike
You are so right. To bad he is in denial. This sin BS is what is wrong with this world. Just go on with your life and try to be an example for good. \\doing good is what counts.
barkomatic
I can understand the comment since he was in Zambia at the time. It’s a much more conservative country and the fact that he was outed while there is probably a danger to him. His comment, while sex-negative to us, is actually pretty tame so far. I didn’t read where he disparaged gay people yet so there’s that.
Anyway, I’m surprised that he didn’t have a game plan in place to deal with the inevitable discovery that he was in gay adult films. Those things are *always* discovered if you become a public figure.
JerseyMike
You know what is as bad as a homophobe? A r@cist!! Homophobia is bad in all communities…Homophobia rise when the white missionaries invade communities with their trash religion. I am sure you walked out of the closet prancing to Modanna and your daddy just loved you…
DCguy
So several years ago NOM said, in memos that were leaked, that their goal was to drive a wedge between racial minorities and the lgbt community. They were going to do this by coming onto lgbt websites, posing as gay people and saying things about minorities.
Look, I get it, your job is to come on here, attack lgbts, ALWAYS support and defend GOP bigotry, and, any chance you get to try to say something disparaging about minorities.
In other words,……Ya Boring!
DCguy
Its, a Christian country where Western missionaries taught the religion. Porn is going to come back to bite you in a big way.
Ummmm Yeah
What was Zambia like for gays before christians showed up?
ChrisK
I did some research into it. Homophobia by and large did not exist until Christianity was taught to them.
Ummmm Yeah
Did your research show no anti-gay written laws before or did you find gay were actually treated well. Those are two different things.
Kangol
Thanks, DCguy and ChrisK. In that volume I linked to above, it shows indigenous names for same-sexual practitioners, spiritual figures, etc. in peoples ranging from the Akan (Ashante) in what is now Ghana to the Zulu in South Africa. It also has a number of articles on same sexual practices before and during colonialism. Zambia, like so many places across the globe, was a former British colony, and is the case wherever Britain imposed its rule, anti-gay laws now exist. The subsequent missionary evangelical push in Zambia hasn’t helped.
Ummmm Yeah
JerseyMike So why don’t blacks leave that religion instead of embracing it. Also, what black cultures supported homosexuals before whites showed up?
Ummmm Yeah
DCguy There no wedge to drive. Blacks don’t support us and gay black people would rather attack gays over Grindr comments than address the violent black homophobia that is aimed mostly at them.
Juanjo
Speak of racist trolls and look who oozes out from under a rock and posts – Ummmm, I’m a douchebag, Yeah.

If he were any younger, all he’s have to deal with is the new “Rite of passage” urgency to post selfie dick pics.
Erik
“You know what is as bad as a homophobe? A r@cist!! ”
You know what is worse? An atheist. Atheism is a prejudice, just as foul and depraved as homophobia, but it targets far more people for hate and degradation.
“with their trash religion.”
Homophobes declare same-sex relationships to be trash, racists declare people of color to be trash, and atheists declare religion to be trash – all of that trash talk serves the same sick purpose – denigrate other to feed one’s ego.
Atheists are the worst bigots in humanity. And since promoting any prejudice, including atheism, nurtures all prejudices, GLBTQ atheists are traitors who vilify their own community as well as nurture homophobia and racism along with their anti-religious hate.
Nate842
Interesting points. I’m sure I don’t need to point out you’re prejudiced here, right?
Daniel-Reader
Ummmm Y… Africa has a rich history of homosexuality being accepted by tribes before european caucasians showed up to inflict mideast religion onto everything. Not much different than North American tribes acceptance before euro colonists showed up.
mrbaze
Who cares? OMG! He did a porn film a long time ago. So what? Get over it folks. No need to apologize unless the acting was crappy. Hello? It’s 2018.
JARR25
I believe he was in some black (is that PC, I am Black-not from the USA not the Americas nor Africa-) film a friend long ago in the 80s was watching called Black something…and he was a power-bottom.
Kangol
He was in a film in 2015. He’s not that old.
Kangol
@Ummmm Yeah, your r@cism always comes through loud and clear but to answer your question: same-sexual desire and practices existed in Africa long before Europeans arrived. They were fully integrated into the culture, as excellent essays in collections like Boy-Wives and Female Husbands: Studies of African Homosexualities and Queer African Reader make clear.
Queer sexualities were fully integrated into African religious and spiritual practices, as they were in the new world with Indigenous people (the two-spirit people, the berdaches, etc.), as they are in Polynesia, etc., which is why Afro-syncretic religions in the New World (Candomblé in Brazil, Santería in Cuba, Vodoun in Haiti, etc.) often include gender-transitional states and welcome queer people as ministers. But all of this is out there. Open one of these books, free your mind.
It’s so unfortunate that again and again on Queerty you can’t just respond to the article but have to check the racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic, etc. crap coming from supposed gay commenters.
fur_hunter
It so irritates me that people are NOT judged on their merits and accomplishments but their sexuality. I wish every church that has had a minister, priest, or whatever who has preached from the pulpit HATE for gays would burn to the ground. I blame religion for the HATE that is propagated towards gays. And they use a book written over 1500 years ago as a reference. Not modern knowledge and legitimate unbiased research. Nooooo. But writings of some moron who knew NOTHING about homosexuality. I wonder how many people who believe that $H!T go to a doctor who uses a medical book written over 1500 years ago as his reference?

Dee78
Who!? Was he an extra? Smh!
miguel
wtf?? The overhwhelming and overly dramatic contrition is the only stain I see here. I realize he was in Zambia when all of this hit. He could’ve either ignored the “outing” or finish his publicity tour elsewhere. Was he being compensated for these appearances in Zambia?
I would rather see him simply man up and say “yeah I did it. So what? It’s not for everyone. I needed money at the time and I am not constricted by sexuality. So live and let live. I retired from the porn business not long after I did the video. I respect all people, and expect them to respect me in return. To anyone offended, I would simply ask that you do not watch it. To every one gay and straight, practice safe sex and live and let live. My past does not define me, and I stand unashamed for myself and for anyone else being judged by anyone but God. Now I’m done talking about this. My movie Black Panther has broken practically every modern day movie record in sales and cultural influence. So let’s get back to talking about that!”
Man up homie. Cut out the dark abyss poems and “children” talk. You’re not living in Zambia now. If there’s rampant homophobia there be a light for all the gay kids and adults suffering. You didn’t hurt anyone for God’s sakes.
JORIAL
Exactly. I also agree this may have been a strategic move to get out of Zambia in one piece. However, if he ever wants to work in Hollywood again, he’s going to have to issue an equally passionate apology for his first apology when he gets back.
CastleSF
All the twists and turns! Now you are saying that this is his ploy to apply for the gay asylum to get out of his country. I can’t say it is not a clever move if it is proved true.
karl61058
Such hyperbole! Take it down a notch. I am with fur_hunter guy, to a point. Expelling hate back at hateful people defeats the purpose of retaliation.
And, what’s the name of Mr. Mutukwa’s porn movie? I would like to know how to get a copy.
Something to consider- Most of the hateful biblical crap is in the Old Testament, not written for Christian. Really take things out of context and you can make anything sound bad.
Bob
I’ve heard so much about the Bible being anti-gay, which parts are. But remember when it was written, when children were VERY important, either to put in armies or to grow population. now we have extreme overpopulation. Sounds like a great time to have more gays!
Besides, I’ve never heard Jesus say anything against gays. With 12 men following him everywhere, who’s to say one of them wasn’t his boyfriend??
dinard38
@Bob Funny you say that, because there are scriptures that suggests that he had a boyfriend amongst the disciples.
karl61058
Sorry, I mean stuff, not “crap.” Don’ t want to offend people (too much). And, Christians-plural not singular.
Thanks.
K
Mmmrrrggglll
I feel sorry for the guy. Fear, shame and self-loathing are stock-in-trade for most homosexuals regardless of the “advances” in acceptance of the last couple of decades in primarily western cultures. Couple that with a short-sighted decision to commit your sexual proclivities to film, only to have it surface when the light of modern celebrity is shining on you must feel devastating. It seems like he has been trying to use his newfound fame to lift up others where he can, and now this chance may be lost as well as his own livelihood. Even in the US, some actors still believe exposure of ones sexual orientation can be “detrimental” to ones career if it affects the audience’s ability to suspend disbelief and enter the contract of wonder films require of us. In Zambia, same sex attraction can be “detrimental” to your life. According to Wikipedia, Section 155 of the Zambian penal code provides for up to 14 years of imprisonment for carnal knowledge of another person “against the course of nature.” I assume this means this actor, while travelling in Zambia and raising monies to benefit under-privileged children, could be arrested at a moments notice and possibly incarcerated for more than a dozen years. I can’t imagine a single person reading, or commenting on, this article, while hiding behind their internet, could possibly have dealt better with this under the same circumstances.
scotshot
Judging us from a homophobic stance no answer given would be acceptable.
Don’t you “people” have something to do on your own side of the fence? It seems you might want to give a care for the children sexually molested by heterosexuals who account for roughly 97% of all child molestations.
F*CK OFF
Juanjo
Oh jeez, scotshot has shown up to demonstrate how a true homophobe operates.

… Good-FOR-Him!?!
johnnymcmxxx
He has nothing to apologize for. Everyone has a past with closet skeletons and porn isn’t shameful and can be a lucrative job for good looking young guys as long as they are smart and stay away from meth. Only in USA are we forced or expected to apologize for our sex life.
Wayne_in_NYC
His name is ZULU on thugseduction dot net. You can see screen caps of his video.
Kangol
I think he’s also in an Entertainment West Studio film too.
crisseugenioo
how it become gay porn when he do only solo?
Kangol
@crisseugenioo, on EWS, he lists himself as “bisexual,” and invites a guy to come pleasure him. Sounds pretty gay to me. And it’s targeted at men attracted to other men, so that makes it…gay, no?
CastleSF
In an act of contrition, this actor admits that performing as a porn actor is wrong and that he is sorry for what he did, even if it is not illegal. Nobody knows for sure if his remorse is truly heart-felt but let’s see if the public is willing to forgive and forget and get him more acting jobs
Kangol
Well, which public do you mean? In Zambia, from the posts I’ve seen, many people appeared to be worked up about the porn history, but they’re blaming it on the evils of the US, Atlanta, etc. In the US, where he filmed Black Panther, I seriously doubt most fans of the film care about his background. Will the director and actors ostracize him? Nope. There are a number of out Black gay figures (Lee Daniels, Jussee Smollett, Tessa Thompson, etc.) in Hollywood these days. Will White Hollywood cut him out of jobs because of his porn past? I doubt that too.
CastleSF
I don’t care about his past and I’d like to see him get more acting jobs. So whatever he had to do to achieve that goal (even if it means apologizing for something he shouldn’t have to), I support that, esp. considering the harsh environments he now finds himself in.
Bromancer7
Except being in porn is not wrong. And the only people who care are those whose ass-backwards attitudes about sex are stuck in the 50s, like you. The rest of us who don’t care about something that’s not worth caring about see nothing that needs forgiveness.
And clearly you do care about his past or you wouldn’t have even bothered writing your original inane statement.
JORIAL
What a drama queen. Actors should perform his poem with extreme sarcasm and post it on YouTube.
Billy Budd
The ONLY important thing is: does he have a BBC?
chris33133
Who cares? Except people in Zambia, that is. But then, as Ron Paul once said about someone else: that was a youthful indiscretion.
Question: What role did he have in Black Panther. I just googled the cast and could not find him.
Kangol
He was a speech coach and played one of the warriors.
nm4047
did the same, was (as the saying goes) 1 of a cast of 1000’s, still gets him the publicity that seems to be the main criteria for doing these ‘new’ worthy stories.
ShowMeGuy
Porn is not a crime.

Isn’t that both TV and the internet was invented for? I look at both daily.
rparnell44
It never ceases to amaze me why people feel that it is necessary to try to make some look bad because of things that they have done in the past. We do not know the circumstances when it happened. If it was something he wanted to do and he did it then more power to him. If he did it because he needed the money or some other reason it was a long time ago. Its none of our business.
What kind of man is he what is in his heart. I would submit this is a attempt to try and embarrass him. Well it did not work. Patrick man you look great and I hear you did a fantastic job in the movie can not wait to see it. Best wishes

Hello this is Hollywood, I am sure about 90% of “straight” actors have engage in some form of gay sex to get ahead (no pun intended) as an actor.
Usually it is not filmed so there is no evidence. Mr Mutukwa is not so lucky so he got busted. You bet you last dollar he is but one of an extremely long list actors who engage in “gay for pay”.
MuslimSlutBox
I wouldn’t blame him for going sex-negative to save his azz while in Zambia. He may need that azz for a future film.
