Budapest Police Just Might Leave the Gays Alone for Pride

budapest_pride1

Was it because of Whoopi Goldberg’s endorsement? Maybe, but either way it’s encouraging to hear the Budapest police (BRFK) have, uh, “acknowledged” the gays who plan to celebrate pride on Saturday.

Despite some political groups, like the Christian Democratic People’s Party, voicing outrage over the Budapest Pride Festival, BRFK signals the show will go on: “Each citizen has the right to express or demonstrate their opinion, even if it is different from the views of others.” But that statement comes with this footnote: Participants should “refrain from behaviour violating public taste” or face prosecution. Uh, okay.

For what it’s worth, the Hungarian embassies from Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States have all endorsed the parade.
