Not that felony convictions immediately disqualify someone for a Grammy Award, but Buju Banton’s arrest by DEA agents in Miami late last week might influence voters to, uh, shun the guy.
Buju (nee Mark Anthony Myrie), is in federal prison and facing charges of “conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilos of cocaine,” reports the Miami Herald. Which, if the allegations are true, are great news — because we know how much America’s music fans always abandon artists after they earn a rap sheet, particularly one involving massive amounts of blow.
But even if Buju’s drug arrest won’t slow his record sales (we imagine the opposite happening), at least we don’t have to rely on a seemingly endless boycott effort to shut down all of his American tour dates.

I am saddened by this arrest. Buju has done lots of work over the past years to make up for Boom Bye Bye, a song written very early in his long career. I have big respect for Buju and for the LBGT community, and I think misguided protests against Banton should end. Focus efforts instead on artists who are actively singing against the gay community. Buju learned his lesson on that particular front… Also, symbolic violence is common in lots of music, and calls for violence are not necessarily meant to be taken literally. That being said, I will not listen to Boom Bye Bye or other overtly hateful songs. However, Buju Banton continues to be one of my favorite artists of all time. Give him a listen, oh ye of open minds!

Fake Name, Hey Eric!, and seymour: no, I do not work for Buju’s record company. this is just an issue that I really care a lot about, because I feel caught in the middle. I was raised by a lesbian mother, and remember having early discussions with her about the “that faggot” refrain in a Public Enemy song. I was raised to listen carefully to messages in the media, and to think critically about their significance. I was raised to disavow hate speech. I am also a passionate reggae and dancehall fan. Buju Banton is one of my favorite all time artists. Being a fan of modern reggae in general raises some qualms for me. In addition to being very homophobic, Jamaican and Rastafarian cultures (which should not be automatically conflated) have some really questionable views on women’s rights and roles. But I also think that reggae, and Buju Banton’s music specifically, can be uplifting, peaceful, and beautiful. The question for me is how much I can cast judgement on another culture, and when hateful music becomes true hate speech, and also if an artists good works can outweigh their bad ones. I admit I may not be fully aware of the whole story here in terms of Buju’s works since Boom Bye Bye, but I do believe he no longer performs that song, and certainly not here in America. I think those of you calling me ignorant need to reexamine your own knee jerk reactions. I am truly trying to see this issue from both sides. It is not an open and shut case for me. Or perhaps there is no way to rationally justify my love of Buju Banton (the artist) with my love of the gay community, so I will have to accept that paradox… Just please know that I have given this issue a lot of thought, and I am not a troll. Here’s my point…buju’s song BoomByeBye continues to do harm. Continues to encourage violence against the most defenceless people in his or any other culture. I’m sure he’s a nice guy except for the whole violent homophobia thing…and I’m sure that he says some semidecent things elsewhere….but he called for MY death and i’m not willing to overlook that. Why would I need to delve into the rest of the songs in his catalog for an excuse to forgive him for a terrible thing he did that he hasn’t even apologized for?
And I think a better example is the racist movie Birth of a Nation. Sure DW Griffith like buju was just parroting the ignorance of his culture. But does that mean that I have to overlook the hatefulness at the heart of the movie? Nope. (Though if you ask me, Disney and most media companies are corrupt and I don’t have any defence for them.)
And I personally have no views of eminem. First of all I am not a racist! I have fought for civil rights my entire life. I have many wonderful black friends and have had relationships with a couple of black men. I was not speaking of African-Americans and should have clarified that. I was referring to people of color in other countries such as Uganda and Jamaica who feel it is perfectly fine to advocate death to gay people. (In response to Hey Eric!) Buju, have been one of my greatest Idols and still will continue to be. Many reggae stars speaks about homos and gays, this have and always will be the root of reggae, way before Bob Marley, even roots rock reggae. Bob Marley sing “man to man is so unjust” many did not knock him. Buju later came and sing Boom bye bye, still many did not knock, because the people did not really started to understand reggae untill the late 90s. OK, all the hateful comments in support of Buju Banton after my early comments have really soured me on all of this. I can’t stand in league with these biggots. But I would like to leave a (perhaps) final thought:
Buju Banton is a target for the gay community because he is low hanging fruit, an easy trarget to pick on. Jamaica is an exceedingly poor country, and even top musicians rarely gain true wealth. Touring in the US is a major revenue source for these struggling artists. And since 9/11, getting a visa is all the more difficult and therefore valuable for Jamaican performers. You can really effectively mess with Buju’s tour with protest, and deny the west coast from seeing him live. I’m sure this hurts Buju’s bottom line, and may be why he was foolish enough to try this cocaine deal. OK, so you have won on that front in the past.
But Buju is really a tiny small fry that you have inflated to some big satan. I wish the gay community would focus their ire more on the homophobes doing real damage domestically: right wing christians. This incredibly wealthy, vitriolic, and empowered community has and is doing so much more to harm gays and gay rights than one little Jamaican artist.
I submit that the gay community is making a mountian out of a molehill with protests against Buju Banton, because it distracts from their (our) true powerlessness to take on the actual, monstrous enemies of homosexuality. Yes, Boom Bye Bye is hateful. Yes, I can see why the gay community would have little love for Buju. But let’s be clear who the real, significant enemies are here, and focus efforts against them.
And Judail: your hate scares me. I am a huge fan of reggae, and I am fascinated with Jamaican culture. But you are about as bad an ambassador as the island could hope for. I am a black Caribbean woman from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and I am offended by that comment.I do not advocate discrinating against or killing people based on their sexual preferences or for any other reason that makes us different in this world. I also do not know of any friend or family member that feels that way. I have had gay friends in my life time and I see no difference between them and any other person.
You cannot condemn an entire race of people because of the actions and statements of a few. Is that not putting yourself in the same category as those who wish to divide people. A statement like that just adds hate to this world. Don’t we have enough hate already?
