Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards‘ daughter, Cate, took to the campaign trail on Sunday.
In addition to stumping for her father’s proposed policies, the 25-year old woman voiced her opinions on gay marriage. Apparently she’s not entirely a daddy’s girl:
I’m on my mom’s side with this, not my dad’s. It’s the word ‘marriage’ that he is hung up on. It’s not about gay rights
He very much does not understand–he has trouble, I guess, with the term ‘gay marriage.’ I don’t. I’m not going to try to defend him on that because I don’t agree with it, but that’s where he stands. But I don’t want it to be understood as not standing for gay rights because that’s certainly not true.
Well, c’mon, Cate! We’re sure you can help your father expand his political vocabulary!

John Edwards, like any successful lawyer, is very crafty. Here’s what he’s doing on the topic of same-sex marriage. He’s saying essentially to red states rubes, “Don’t worry, I am against it,” while at the same time saying, “Don’t worry, my wife and children are for it, they will persuade me” to voters with a sense of decency and fairness. Clever, no?
