HOMO FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Christmas Divas: Five Singers Who Ought To Release Holiday Albums

Most singers record Christmas albums to make a quick buck. It’s a cheap and easy way to fund their holiday shopping sprees, and it keeps the fans happy between studio albums.

Every now and then, however, a Christmas album can have a lasting impact on an artist’s career (Mariah Carey’s 1994 album Merry Christmas, for instance, has sold over 15 million copies and remains the bestselling Christmas album of all time).

Given Mariah’s success, we can’t help but wonder why more divas don’t release Christmas albums. We’ve compiled a list of divas who we think should consider releasing holiday albums.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé surprised us with her fifth studio album Beyoncé earlier this week, which she kept a secret until the day it was released. That got us wondering: What other tricks does the diva have up her sleeve? A surprise Christmas album, perhaps?

Bey made her first foray into holiday music back when she was a part of Destiny’s Child. The girl group released 8 Days of Christmas in 2001. The album went on to sell over two million copies worldwide.

Given Beyoncé’s success since leaving Destiny’s Child, we think follow-up solo Christmas album would be a huge hit.

Britney Spears

We’d love a Christmas album from the Princess of Pop. She wouldn’t even have to sing. She could just breathe heavily over a dance beat and the sound of jingle bells in the background and we’d be satisfied.

Miss Britney Jean released her first (and only) holiday single back in 2000. “My Only Wish (This Year)” was a hit in South Korea, selling over 600,000 copies. It took about a decade for the song to catch on in America. It finally made it to Billboard‘s U.S. Holiday Charts in 2010, peaking at #49.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie teased us with her extended play A Kylie Christmas back in 2010. The EP featured two holiday tunes, “Let It Snow” and “Santa Baby.” Since hearing those songs, we’ve been dying for a full-length Kylie holiday album.

Kanye West

Diva/rapper Kanye West gave us a taste of what his Christmas album might sound like with the song “Christmas in Harlem.” The hip hop holiday jingle is about — well — Christmas in Harlem, and features a slew of artists, including Big Sean, Teyana Taylor and Musiq Soulchild, among others.

“I like the way you think, mami. Now pour some more eggnog in you drink, mami,” West raps. “You’ve been a bad girl, give Santa three kisses. Gave her the hot chocolate, she said ‘It’s Dee-ricious.'”

Cher

Believe it or not, in her nearly 50-year career Cher has never released a proper holiday album. She did a Christmas TV special with Sonny once, and she’s put out a few holiday singles (including one featuring Rosie O’Donnell), but no actual album yet. We think it’s high time the diva consider recording one. After all, what does she have to lose?

Listen to her auto-tuned holiday dance song Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) featuring Rosie O’Donnell. It’s a-maz-ing.
