Christopher Cantwell, a.k.a. the sobbing neo-Nazi, surrenders himself to police

This just in: Crying neo-Nazi Christopher Cantwell is currently sitting in a jail cell in Lynchburg, Virginia after surrendering himself to police.

Just to recap: Cantwell attended the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” white supremacist rally earlier this month. While there, he was recorded shouting hateful, racist rhetoric, waving guns and other weapons in the air, and threatening violence.

Days later, he posted a pathetic video to YouTube in which he sobbed like a baby over learning that there were multiple warrants out for his arrest.

Cantwell told The New York Times last weekend that the warrants stemmed from an incident during the hate rally when he pepper-sprayed a stranger. He claims it was in self-defense.

“I thought that spraying that guy was the least damaging thing I could do,” he said. “In my left hand I had a flashlight. My other option, other than the pepper spray, was to break this guy’s teeth. OK? And I didn’t want to do that. I just wanted him to not hurt me.”

The New York Times reports:

In a statement released late Wednesday, the university police said they had been notified late that afternoon that Mr. Cantwell had turned himself in to the Lynchburg Police Department in Virginia. The brief statement did not say when Mr. Cantwell turned himself in.

He was being held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Lynchburg, Va., pending transport to Charlottesville, the university police said.

Cantwell is charged with two felony counts of illegal use of tear gas plus an additional count of malicious bodily injury by means of a caustic substance.
