“If this goes through, persecution is coming,” Glenn Beck cautioned listeners of his hate show last week. “I mean serious persecution!”
He was talking about same-sex marriage, of course. According to Beck (and absolutely no one else) the government is intent on legalizing gay marriage so it can launch a secret mission to strip churches of their tax exempt status if they refuse to perform same-sex weddings.
“Mark my words,” Beck babbled. “If gay marriage goes through the Supreme Court and gay marriage becomes fine and they can put teeth in it so now they can go after churches, like the president’s lawyer says, 50% of our churches will fall away!”

How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
How long will it take for Christians to abandon their places of worship?
“Within five years,” Beck predicted, claiming that “the stigma of going to church will be too much” for some Christians, who do not want to risk their jobs, livelihoods and reputations.
“They’ll say, ‘I can’t do that, I’ll lose my job, people are picketing my house, I just can’t do that,” Beck said.
Watch him run his mouth in the video below. Or don’t.

And the World cares what Glenn Beck thinks for why?

If gay marriage passing stops your from being a Christian then you had no faith to start with
Michael Finnegan
Proving the futility of their prayers?
Robert Melanson
Church attendance is going to plummet one way or the other. Its an institution that is no longer relevant in society.
Robert Zakem
What a load of rubbish!!!! And people actually listen to this jackass!
Stephen Meeks
Hmph. It’s going to plummet whether Same-sex marriage is leagalized or not.
Matthew Wallisch
Lol
Matthew Wallisch
Who goes to church anymore??!!
Frank Smekar
Travis Cooper
Stupid, stupid non-even-an-arguments.
Jimm Wiedeman
Yeah right. Those bible thumpers will always go cmon on.
If not to pray for the gays to go away.
Jeez lol
Andrew Vermaak
Churches shouldn’t be exempt from tax anyway!
Michael Haynes
I think church attendance is already plummeting to start with. People are starting to see that the church is not what it once was. Caring about the People, Instead the church of today is only about looking our for yourself. Looking down on and hating people who do not hold to the same values as you. That is why people are leaving the churches in droves.
Howard Steiman
Yes, and we all know he has a good source for this information. What if gay marriage was the right and straight marriage was not legal, would all this ignorance, bigotry and hate still be happening.
tdh1980
It says more about the dogma of one’s faith than marriage equality or one’s support thereof if a church or the institution of religion itself doesn’t survive legalization of same-sex marriage.

Raymond Houston Bridges
Oh! Only if it were true!
Michael Zanger
Quite possibly if priests and pastors can get married 😉
Rick Collier
No, I’m sure the masses of bigots will still flock to hear their demagogue preachers, more Christian inclusive congregations may actually see their attendance grow! Fortunately and hopefully Beck is right and the influence of religious haters is waning in our society! What I fear is that they will become more violent!
Atrius
Let’s hope that’s a conservative estimate. I want more than 50%.
Realitycheck
The sky is falling, the sky is falling……….yawn….
Firs of all church attendance has been falling for decades, thanks to a
small thing called education.
Second it would be a miracle if church attendance was to suddenly drop
by 50%, demonstrating people willingness to actually use their brains and
capacity to think for themselves……..
one only dares to hope……………
Robert Becker
What… people will stop going to church because the world didn’t end as predicted? Perhaps those who convinced their congregations that all hell would break loose if Gay could marry, will have some explaining to do. “To Question is to Learn”
Kevin Anderson-Garrity
News flash same gendered marriage is legalized in 37 stats plus Washington DC and I have heard of no mass exodus from the church. Your argument is baseless.
Brian K Johnson
Well if it brings on the rapture like Michelle Bachman says it should be empty…lol
Robert Christian Show
Many have left the traditional church and have waken up. The Reason is the greed in most churchs, the hate they spew, the anger that resides. The Falling away from the church is not because of same sex marriage- but the lack of trust in the church. Greedy Church’s thrive on fear. Fear this or that, fear something else- Fear sells where as love does not.
Noel Hoklin
They blame the gays on everything – natural disasters, hunger, plagues, single parenting, divorce rate, oil prices, Obamacare, violence (OK, not violence cuz gay people are NOT violent), etc.
Dameon Gene Rogers
Like any small business churches need to adapt to survive, or face dissolution…
Skip Fillers
Why would church attendance decline if gay marriage is passed? We don’t go to church now?!?!? ð???

You say that like it’s a BAD thing!

all the more reason to pass it…! Churches are the real evil.

If the government let the Mormon Church and the Catholic Church spend over 100 million directly pushing anti-gay legislation and never took their tax exempt status away, they will let them get away with anything.
The IRS has been sued multiple times for NOT enforcing the laws that are there to keep churches out of politics, and every time they say they will start to enforce them, and every time they don’t because the Senators that oversee the IRS won’t allow their churches to be penalized for breaking the tax law.

The funny thing is it’s only the religious people who are turning this into an issue of religions. At no point do you really hear gay people demanding to be married in a church that doesn’t support gay marriage. All we want is for our marriages to be recognized legally by the government.
If a church does not approve gays or gay marriage, we obviously aren’t going to attend that one, but instead go to one that better suits us. Just like everyone else does with church. They will attend the one that fits them and their faith better.
Chris L. Reynolds
That’s their problem, not those to whom they demonstrate their Bigotry and hatred towards!
Ives Meagher
They can all suck it lol
Rick Gillum
Oh no. Who will support all of those mega pastors? How will they survive? Can they do there own laundry? Cook ? Clean?
John Kuehnle
I think a lot of people have lost respect for the church and priests over the molestation cover up scandal. You can’t cover that up then judge how people live their lives.
Paul David Liehr
If he quits going I might even show up . . .

Whatever. He can’t even say it with a straight face. I’m sorry, when did Glenn Beck start cosplaying Mr. Rogers?

It will not

Church attendance is plummeting…

I want one singe person here to show me proof that letting gay people get married would affect your religious beliefs or your marriage… and I’m asking for tangible proof, not something your whacko brain manufactures as real.

But that’s a good thing….isn’t it? Chuches are shrines to the narcissism of men not God!

Alex Rothwell
Really ridiculous statements coming from these types.
Matthew Katz
yeah that’s it. they were just waiting for gay marriage so the party could get started!!!!!
Greg Morris
That makes absolutely no sense.. I figured with the end days coming because of gay marriage that the churches would be SRO. That is what they tell us, gay marriage is going to bring about the end of the world, right?
EN Hidalgo
Fucking christianity. It is a stupid mind disease. I’m fed up with it.
Steven Alan McGaw
So what?
Transiteer
Only 50%?? I’m disappointed. I would’ve hoped the Institution for Hate and Ignorance would collapse altogether.
Tom Swayzee
In my lifetime, it’s been rock n roll music, segregation, ERA, aids, abortion, gays rights, same sex marriage and religious freedom. They will always find a doomsday event to keep fear in their followers and the tax free money rolling in.
John Andrew K. Carver
How can anyone in their right mind come to that conclusion? That’s right we are talking about Glenn Beck, need I say more?
Tom Strohecker
And why should I care?!
Tim Cobb
Good……hooray at last.
Kevin Braddock
I don’t think the people of “the church” understands that the church has been spewing the same song and dance for decades. If this is made legal it will cause the end of the world is not what will happen! These people need to read Dante’s Inferno, heretics have their own special place in hell. God’s point is to love thy neighbor not to pass judgement. Do not lie steal or murder. Those are what I do. These ignorant people are the ones that need the wake up call! I stopped going to the church due to people like him
Joseph Blickfeldt
Well, we can only hope…
Errol Semple
Good.

That is just a stupid remark…period! I know plenty of gay Christians. Who is going to stop going to church? Only those who come to their senses! Fab!
Rich Herling
Wait. So. This is a win win!!!
Pat McFall
This all so riduculous. People are going to attend church irregardless, especially those that believe and I am one of them.

Actually my calculations say church attendance may rise due to finally being accepted into the church… Just saying…
Doug Feltis
Mr Beck, can you explain why that didn’t happen in Canada?
Bobby Glenn Brown
Re-Dick. Stupid is as stupid does. God is everywhere
Marc Bossa
Therefore: there are a lot more closeted homosexuals in churches now….? Trying to find some logic in Mr. Beck’s statement here….no, no such thing(logic)there.
benandy
Okay, so church attendance was NEVER EVER 100%. Currently, according to CHURCHES, the number of butts in pews on an average Sunday is under 20% of the population. So, you can look at it that a rabid 15% or so are in choich EVERY Sunday [might be 12%], even if they have the flu or are constipated, and that everyone else who goes is there for Christmas or Easter, maybe both. That would just about compute to the actually choich attendance reported by choiches.
I went ONCE last year with the Lutheran Pastor hubby, to LA’s 1st Congregational Church for the Xmas Eve service. Fabulous, the world’s largest church organ, gigantic choir, cast cement Gothic setting [much preferred in LA to masonry], lovely decorations, playful lighting. The LA Gay Men’s Chorus rehearses and performs in this location [they like big organs, I guess]. We even donated when the plate came around.
Fall by half, Glenn? Sure, because as you well know, those aged butts in pews are dying off and the kids ain’t making up the numbers. Nothing to do with the gayz getting married. In fact, if the message was one of inclusive love rather than defining hate, you might actually see a slow turnaround. But, hey, we’ll find something to do w/ the buildings. Even the Hagia Sophia is still a museum at nearly 1,500 years old.
Remington Graves
Good.
Bauhaus
Look, church attendance has been plummeting since millennials figured out the their clergy was full of shit, and their congregations not inclusive. Nothing is gonna bring them back, either.
David Mitchell
Oh please…what he won’t do for ratings and keep his name out there.
Sandy Waddell
Well, if church goers plummet then obviously they arent into their faith very much are they !!
Ken Painter
Simple question: Has church attendance plummeted 50% in the 37 states and the D of C where marriage equality is already legal? No? Then why will it elsewhere? Glenn Beck is just trash talking as usual.
Adrian Zavala
Yay!! That means fewer people spreading hate!!!
Shirley White
Who cares? God is not in those churches. They are full of hate
Loyd Hawkins
Boy, these right wing zealots sure think we gay people have enormous, almost supernatural powers if gay marriage will lead to half the Christians in America abandoning their faith.
Eloweez Rainbowz
Then they attended for the wrong reason in the first place….

Hope springs eternal…..

All that money the church spent to prevent same sex marriage sure seems like a waste now. How many people could they have really helped with that money? You know like the poor, or the sick, or the homeless, you know, the people that Jesus actually talked about!
Vincent DeFeo
Good!
Bauhaus
@polarisfashion:
Church-goers don’t like to talk about “those” kind of people. It requires them to take a good look at their belief system and their politics, something they conveniently ignore, thinking they are “good Christians” fighting against abortion and gay marriage (something they can sink their teeth into). Evangelicals have the highest divorce rate, interestingly.
IcarusD
No one is going after the Churches to force them to perform same-sex marriages, and Glenn Beck knows it. No one has gone after them to force interdenominational marriages, or marriages between people who aren’t part of the congregation but think their church is picturesque.
But he is sort of right about one thing. No, church membership won’t drop 50% BECAUSE of same-sex marriage. Rather, same-sex marriages have been made possible because of already declining church attendance (which in turn is driven in part by younger people not being able to relate to their parents’ churches more strident teachings).
Roger McCollum
Good, too bad its not zeroes
Stu Hipwell
Why?!?!
Dakotahgeo
@Bauhaus: I would beg to differ when you paint with such a broad stroke of a brush! I was a ordained Christian pastor for ten years (8 in the Baptist church!). I literally talked people out of joining our church because of the vileness of the congregation. I sent them to other churches which were accepting of ALL people. When I retired, I joined a progressive GLBT-supportive Mennonite church and this spring we will be accepting 30 new people between the ages of 22 and 35 into our church membership! This marks the difference between the recalcitrant christian bogus fools and those who chose to uphold each other in love. You simply cannot say that every church and every minister is the same, just because you’ve had bad experiences with the church or pastor. I have many atheists and Gnostic friends and I treat them as brothers on earth. And I have enough respect for them that I refuse to act like a christian assh*le to them! There is a BIG difference between a christian and a CHRISTIAN! I have no time for the religious right American christian Taliban… never have, never will! Pastor George M Melby (Ret.).

What a moron!
Church people gonna church!
Suddenly the persecution of YOU is bad? when the persecution of US? was just fine and dandy?
Not just a moron, but a hypokritkal moron as well!

Church attendance is plummeting, yes, bit for very different reasons…
Monica Stamper Haggard
When will people remember if you are judging others YOU are sinning?!
Giancarlo85
Church attendance has already been going down for years and same sex marriage had nothing to do with it. Education and modernization did have everything to do with it. In Argentina, society has become highly modern and less than 20% actually go to church. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. People are now thinking on their own more. Oh and Glenn needs to realize not all christians are going to go to church.

@enfilmigult: THANK YOU! Spot on the mark from a retired minister! The majority of “Christians” are over this argument, have moved on, and have to put up with idiot christians like the extremists all the time.

Glenn Beck’s prediction is the best news I’ve heard in decades! Unfortunately, same-sex marriage is not a “cure” for religious craziness; religion is a more virulent pestilence than that. Too bad one can not vaccinate against the deception of religion.
Carlos Manuel Perez
We should be so lucky!
Joe Watters
Yes and there will be earthquakes, famine and drought bla, bla, bla!
Vigo Beninger
I highly doubt that’s the reason
Lee-Gwen Booth
Um, what? Is it going to plummet because people will be too busy attending secular same sex weddings? Or will disgust at the negative reaction of their church to same sex marriage mean that people stop going to church?
jwtraveler
@Pat McFall: You don’t need to attend college. You need to attend an English writing class to learn how to express yourself in the English language.
