City Of San Diego Officially Renames Street After Harvey Milk

With things looking grim in North Carolina, we thought we’d share some nice news from West Coast: The San Diego City Council unanimously voted today to give final approval to rename Blaine Avenue after slain gay-rights hero Harvey Milk, who lived in the city while stationed with the Navy.

San Diego is the first city in the U.S. to have a street named after Milk.

“A year ago, a group of community leaders came together around the notion the time had come to honor an LGBT civil rights leader in San Diego the same way we have given honor to other civil rights leaders such as Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King, Jr,” said Dwayne Crenshaw, San Diego LGBT Pride Executive Director. “Today marks a symbolic and significant moment in the movement forward towards the American value of equality.”

An official unveiling celebration takes place on Harvey Milk’s birthday, May 22, at the corner of Harvey Milk Street (Blaine Ave.) and Centre Street. Now let’s see if we can get that naval ship christened in Harvey’s honor, shall we?
