Senator Hillary Clinton promised voters that she’ll try to overturn Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: the discriminatory policy that forbids soldiers from coming out. Regardless of the Democrats lofty goals of equality, Clinton wants gay military men and women to watch themselves:
In Tama, an Air Force veteran asked Clinton about her support for allowing gays to serve openly in the military. How would privacy be protected, he asked?
Clinton said she believed all service members, including gays, must be expected to observe the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which determines appropriate behavior.
“I feel strongly that if someone wants to serve their country, if they’re a patriot, if they’ll comply with the code of military justice and have appropriate behavior, they should not be disqualified simply because they are gay.”
Who knew a presidential candidate could be so ironic?

Actually, Hillary is saying here that every service member should be treated equally, held to the same standards and abide by the same rules . . . regardless of sexual orientation.
A military that treats gay service members on par with straight service members is a giant leap forward. Get rid of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and make everybody play by the same rules . . . sounds right to me.

Hillary’s saying that even without DODT, gay men and women serving in the Military should not have sexual relationships with each other while serving.
That’s exactly right, sexual relationships of any kind inhibit troops’ discipline and morale. Heterosexual affairs are also banned under the Military Code of Justice.

Not true Mike. Gay folks would not be allowed to have ANY sexual relationships – no partners at home, no flings in ports of call. Nothing. Sodomy (anything other than male/female, penile/vaginal) is illegal according to the Uniform Code.
Heterosexuals, on the other hand, can have wives, husbands, flings around the world, and as long as they avoid sodomy or anything illegal there’s no problem.
This is not about sexual relationships WITHIN the ranks of the military. That is the red herring that repugs and religious bigots always serve up. The real issue is being allowed to have healthy gay relationships OUTSIDE of the ranks and still be allowed to serve honorably.

Actually, Gregg, the military’s sodomy statute applies to both same-sex AND opposite-sex conduct, and is applied far more frequently in heterosexual cases.
Regardless, though, Senator Clinton has said she supports modifying the UCMJ to de-criminalize consensual, adult conduct, whether it is same or opposite-sex.

Many of you are missing the point and/or don’t know the facts about DADT. You don’t actually have to have same-sex sex. All you have to do is say you’re gay, or if someone tips off your unit that you’re gay. Merely possessing some gay porn, or a letter from your boyfriend is sufficient. The grounds for discharge is BEING gay. There is no hetero parity with that- there is no crime for merely BEING straight.
Having said that, it is the height of irony and lunacy that a lesbian, Hillary “Two Presidents for the Price of One” Clinton, gave us DADT and the Defense of Marriage Act. Like many others, straight and gay, I am unable to hold my nose and vote for her, nomatter what.
