Axis Nightclub, in Columbus, Ohio, hosted their 5th annual ‘Night of 100 Drag Queens’ on Saturday July 26th — a fitting name for a show that has broken the world record for the largest drag show. Although there weren’t quite 100 drag performers as the show’s name suggests, the 55 who did perform were enough to break the current standing record of 39, set by Neighbours Nightclub in Seattle, Washington this past June.
The event, hosted by Nina West and Virgina West, was an annual fundraiser hosted by Axis to raise money for the 2015 Gay Softball World Series (GSWS). With performances by both drag queens and drag kings, and included a silent auction, the show raised more than $13,000 for the cause. At one point in the show all 55 performers took to the stage to perform a group routine to the classic Weather Girls song, ‘It’s Raining Men’, in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Drag Queen Stage Show.
“Virginia West and I cohosted the event, and have for the last 5 years,” Nina West told us. “She is my amazing drag mother and very best friend. Keith Speers brought this event to Columbus after being inspired by a similar event in Chicago. He and his partner Michael have really been such leaders on the event. And the rest really happened organically. So many people really jumped at taking part this year because of the Guinness World Record attempt…. I reached out to many performers and committee members reached out to softball players and then friends and community members just started jumping in as well because they wanted to be part of it — they wanted to be a part of history.”
GSWS Columbus must now submit their evidence of the performance to Guinness World Records for verification. If successful, the GSWS Columbus submission will surpass the current record of 39 Drag Queens by 16. The verification process can take up to 12 weeks once the evidence is received.
