According to Urban Dictionary, revenge porn (or sometimes referred to in the slang ‘revenge pr0n’) is “a nude photograph or video which is publicly shared online (most frequently by an ex-lover of the subject’s) for the purpose of spiteful humiliation.” It’s become a growing trend in the age of smartphones and social media, and it affects a lot more people than you might think.

A new study from the Center for Innovative Public Health Research has found that 1 in 25 Americans–that’s roughly 10 million people–say they’ve been confronted and/or threatened with revenge porn, with LGBTQ people being the most targeted group of victims.
The survey, which was the first national study conducted on the topic, asked more than 3,000 people ages 15 years and up about their experiences with revenge porn. Researchers learned was that about 3% of respondents have had an ex-lower threaten to post their nudie pics and videos online in an effort to humiliate them, and 2% said someone did so without their permission.

Researcher also found that LGBTQ people were the hardest hit when it came to acts of revenge porn, with 15% reporting being threatened, and 7% reporting having the threat carried out.
Women, in general, were more affected than their male counterparts, with 10% reporting threats and 6% reporting having seen their images shared online without consent. In comparison, 4% of men said they’ve found non-consensual x-rated images of themselves online, and 3% reported having received threats.

Amanda Lenhart, the author of the report, told the Washington Post that revenge porn is “a common tactic among domestic abusers” but that it can also be committed by hackers who break into a person’s email, cloud-storage, or webcam.
“Nonconsensual pornography can have a devastating and lasting impact on victims,” she said, “so it’s vital that we understand how common this is and who is affected.”

The glaring irony was entirely too much to ignore without comment.
For YEARS Queerty has been scouring the interwebs for pictures of men’s genitalia or GIFS and movies of coital acts and writing articles about them and posting links to the sites that host them. If you search back through the website’s archives, you will find that many of these links are now broken or removed at the request of the subject of said images or their attorneys, because clearly these images were released without consent, which this study clearly defines as revenge porn.
While THIS specific Queerty article appears to be neutral on the topic it discusses, which is a rarity as most articles on this site don’t bother to hide the author’s bias when discussing an issue, the study which is the topic of the article is clearly against the non-consensual release of images of people’s naughty bits. So which is it, Queerty? Is the left hand unaware of what the right hand is doing, or has the publication as a whole reversed its stance (literally overnight) on how penis pic leaks should be treated?

@Just for this post: It’s much worse than that. Some “author” here also has a serious obsession with diaper fetishists and looked up pics of teens who posted pics of that online. One kid in particular had his small town find out because of this site. I read his story recently and he basically says he was tormented in town and his sister(for some odd reason) was humiliated even worse.
Queerty is just as if not more guilty and the worst part is they don’t even know the people they’re spammming pictures of. They’re not the only site doing it either. It’s creepy and weird to behave like that. Especially when you know you have a large audience and you could be doing a lot of damage to a person’s life.
I’ve linked this article before because I was horrified that they would just out a bunch of teens that way over something as silly as a damn fetish. Nevermind what could and DID happen when at least one’s parents got involved. Now they write this hypocritical article without a care in the world. I’m sure they’ll raid Tumblr again in a few months posting more fetish pics of under age 15 year old boys to humiliate.

Anyone who allows pictures or videos to be taken of them naked must realise that there is a very good chance they will end up in the public domain. The moral here is that if you don’t want the pictures seen then don’t take them on the first place. What purpose do they really serve?
Pictures taken without your knowledge is a different matter all together though.

@Heywood Jablowme: The article quite clearly refers to it as s slang form. These is often no “why” to these things. Why does crazy become “cray-cray”, why does baby/babe become “bae”, why does bitch become the truely idiotic “biotch”? Why do people think it is cute to wear t-shirts that say “fcuk”?
