I know people need to be scared sh*tless to curb the unsafe sex acts, but as a PWA, I find this offensive. There are MILLIONS of PWAs, and this portrays us as f*ckin the dead. I also don’t think this will frighten anyone, the age group difficult to reach(16-25yo), are confident they are 10 feet tall, and bullet proof, they will laugh at this, as much as they laugh at drug ads with fried eggs.

Here in the UK I am constantly horrified about the complacency about HIV infection amongst gay juves, it’s utterly maddening. Not all, lots are all too well aware of the dangers, but a sizeable proportion just don’t seem to care cos “AIDS is curable now, innit?”

There have been times on gay cruise and chatlines when I have been aggressively attacked by bareback enthusiasts for criticising barebacking! And I mean really aggressively attacked.

I know it’s different this side of the pond cos we have a national health service and the HIV drugs are free but even so, having to take tablets everynight at exactly the right time, and the side effects, – is not good.

@ Tallskin- then just avoid the BBers if you have a problem with it. No one’s trying to hear preachy sh!t.

Mark…you are joking, right? You can’t be this easy to offend. First, it is impossible to say whether or not these are two male skeletons (I can’t really check the width of the pelvic girdles from this angle…), and second, this isn’t suggesting any sort of necrophilia as you seem to see…

But i will agree that it isn’t very effective. I think the French did it better with these ads:

    http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m232/gardyg/ad.jpg

And though it probably isn’t effective at curbing HIV transmission, we can thank the Swiss for this ad: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/213/469657337_dd47084b4b.jpg

    Trenton,
“Mark…you are joking, right? You can’t be this easy to offend.”

WHO the f*ck do you think you are determining what offends a PWA?

When you’ve buried ALL your friends and your lover, and been sick for 23 years…then you tell me what I can be offended by.

what it all boils down to, is how much people don’t really care about HIV/AIDS. its a self inflicted disease – in most cases – so many people dont have a lot of sympathy for people who get it. i certainly dont for middle class white men who have all the education to make the choices. I sympathise with africans over gay white males, im sorry.

what im trying to say is that there is a cure out there for the disease but how much effort do you reckon is really being put into finding it? 70 million people infected, tens of millions of deaths and yet its barely on the news. and the reason is YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER

theres my rant for the day ciao lol

The NEXT wave of MASSIVE deaths will hit America again, but this time an almost equal number of heterosexuals and gays will be dying. Almost an equal number of women and men will die. because for 8 years NO NEW drugs were developed, and AIDS mutates more than any other virus.

    Mark:

I’m not telling you that you can’t be offended. I’m just honstly surprised that it would offend you given that the ad A) didn’t stereotype based on the sex of the two figures B) didn’t use a stereotypical image of two poz individuals and that C) AIDS is deadly (you know that more intimately than most) and they clearly don’t want to beat around the bush.

Like I said above, I don’t find it particularly effective, but they are trying. There is no delicate way to portray the subject matter and at least this is better than silence on the issue. The people who created the ad obviously didn’t intend for it to offensive, nor did they themselves find it offensive, and I’m sure there are PWAs in their ranks. Given that, I don’t see how you could find it so, though I do see why it might conjure up grief for you.

“as a PWA, I find this offensive. There are MILLIONS of PWAs, and this portrays us as f*ckin the dead”

Um, no, it shows people who are HIV NEGATIVE who fuck w/out condoms. As someone living with AIDS, you should encourage ads that scare people into wearing condoms. Instead all you can think if your own feelings.

    Hells kitchen,
I suggest you read my post, before you critique it.
“I know people need to be scared sh*tless to curb the unsafe sex acts”
    and
“I also don’t think this will frighten anyone, the age group difficult to reach(16-25yo), are confident they are 10 feet tall, and bullet proof, they will laugh at this, as much as they laugh at drug ads with fried eggs.”

” it shows people who are HIV NEGATIVE”

and you can tell they are negative HOW?

    August 9, 2008 at 2:08am

btw hell’s Kitchen if both are Negative, they wouldn’t need a condom

    August 9, 2008 at 2:08am
  • gay as life

Mark – I find your reaction to this ad to be disingenuous. Portrayals of HIV+ folks as strong survivors are uplifting, but do nothing to deter negative people from having unsafe sex, and in fact have the opposite effect of encouraging people to see HIV as “no big deal.”

It’s fantastic that you are a survivor. But ads like this SHOULD portray unsafe sex as f*cking the dead, or else what effect would they have?

    August 9, 2008 at 3:08pm
  • mark

    gay as life,
Whatever you think of my reaction, is rather beyond the point, you don’t govern my reactions, and I don’t govern yours.
There are much more frightening aspects of AIDS than this F*CKIN pair of skeletons depict.
Show these young queers living on disability,so they can’t afford a car or car insurance or have to write to drug companies to get compassionate care drugs, or having their organs fail from drug side effects, or constant nausea,or loss of sex drive, or the fat redistributing itself from your gaunt face to a pregnant sized belly…that will frighten young queers substantially more than a pair of dickless skeletons…where or what do you suppose they put their condoms on?

    August 9, 2008 at 8:08pm
  • gay as life

I agree with you that this particular ad will be ineffective, but most of the things you list would be very tough to convey in one concise picture. Though I think the fat redistribution idea could definitely be used for a very effective campaign. But I also wonder if Big Pharma would (or perhaps already has) squash that campaign quick.

    August 9, 2008 at 8:08pm

    gay as life

Just get hold of some BEFORE pictures of doctors adding facial fill to PWA’S faces, that’ll do the trick.

    August 9, 2008 at 9:08pm
  • gay as life

I just read on JoeMyGod that San Francisco tried a campaign focusing on wasting, but there was a big uproar from offended PWA’s. I guess someone will always be offended.

    gay as life,

I assume someone tried to use a photo they didn’t have permission to use.

    August 10, 2008 at 4:08pm
  • gay as life

Mark, I don’t think so. The reason given was the “local outcry from pozzers who complained that such images unfairly presented them as ghoulish-looking.”

    August 11, 2008 at 12:08am
  • Trenton

    Mark:

As an exercise, let’s see if you can distinguish the difference in meaning between the two statements:

“Mark, you are joking right? You can’t be this blind with bitterness to not see the difference in meaning.”

“You can’t see the diference in meaning.”

    Got that?

    Probably not.
