Good Morning America‘s Sam Champion is predicting a warm front with a 90 percent chance of “Aww,” after his engagement to longtime partner Rubem Robierb went viral.
“You guys, I don’t think people understand what a wonderful family you guys are,” Champion said on GMA yesterday. “I never saw any of this coming in my life until I met the most, and I mean it, the most wonderful, giving, loving, caring person, I think, on the planet.”
Robierb, a photographer, was in the studio, making for some adorable cutaways of the two of them. Sam was all smiles – all 800 watts – as he recounted the love and support he received from everyone including strangers on the street, a recovering Robin Roberts and…Ben Affleck.
“The amazing response from folks all over the country was just incredible for us,” he said.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“I felt like we lived in a small town…I was born in Paducah, KY, and to me that’s exactly what it felt like. We walked out on the street and everyone was like, ‘Hey, congratulations.'”
Roberts, still on the mends after a bone marrow transplant, tweeted: “You know how thrilled I am for you, @SamChampion and Rubem! Hope to be well enough to attend the wedding. Much love to you both.”
Affleck, stopping by to promote his new film Argo, also wished the happy couple the best. “I want to congratulate Sam,” he said. “It’s to our shame that you can’t get married in every state in the union, but one day I hope you will be able to. It’s very exciting. I was very inspired…a moving, love story.”
We don’t know about you, but there’s about six feet of “Aww” sitting outside our window right now thanks to Hurricane Precious (Based on the Engagement of Sam Champion and Rubem Robierb..by Sapphire).

So glad that we are starting to get to the tipping point where people are actually coming out BEFORE their career’s are over. That is great. Congrats to the happy couple.

When I was a teenager growing up in a small farming town I never imagined there’d be a day when I’d see this on television. Or that there’d be a day when an actor with the visibility of Zachary Qunito could come out and the news would in some ways help his career. There’s also Neil Patrick Harris, Jim Parsons, Jessie Tyler Ferguson…the list is getting quite long. Even Ricky Martin’s coming out is an achievement in my mind. Sure it affected his career but having someone so high profile finally say enough is enough is a very big deal!

THIS is what visibility is about folks. It’s things like this that attain true equality for us. Yes, court room battles and triumphs are worthy. But you wanna know something? what changes minds, your families minds, and societies heart is….when we come out. When we showcase our love, our partners, our relationships to our families and friends. When we teach our loved ones that our partner and our relationship with our partner is just as beautiful and valid as their heterosexual relationship with their spouse. That can ONLY happen via visibility, being out, and being forthcoming about who we are. No change is made through hidden paths. Don’t ever forget that.
