A gaggle of angry conservatives are up in arms over a book discussion being held at the University of California, Santa Barbara later this month on “the anti-fat stigma that persists in American culture.”

The event is scheduled for January 20 and is being hosted by the UCSB Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity. It will feature Dr. Jason Whitesel, whose book Fat, Gay Men: Mirth, Girth, and the Politics of Stigma explores the impact of fat-shaming the gay community.
When UCSB student and blossoming antigay activist Carlos Flores got wind of the event, he immediately alerted conservative blogs in an email subjected: “Another day, another degenerate email from the UCSB LGBT Center.”

Flores told the website Campus Reform, “As I understand it, they’re using taxpayer money and my tuition dollars to talk about how to sodomize overweight men, which doesn’t seem like the best use of that money.”
“I don’t think the university should be using my funds to hold a morally questionable event,” he added, “I’d rather they spent someone else’s money.”
The Resource Center responded by saying that funding for the event “comes from student lock-in fees that are voted on/reaffirmed by the student body every four years.”
In other words: It’s not taxpayer money. It’s the students’ money. And they have elected to have it spent on this event.

Without having read the actual article, this does seem a bit inappropriate.

That sounds like a great title

I am liberal but this is something that could be held off campus, it is a bit tackless to have this subject right in students faces.

I don’t see, in reading the article and the title of the book about which the discussion will be, where there is going to be lurid and detailed instruction on the fine art of anal sex with bears.
As a man who is not a hard body with abs and a sexy pelvic “V” who wears size 29 Levi’s, I would like to be in a frank discussion about the gay propensity toward fat shaming. Hell… Even the guys bigger than I am don’t want to date guys my size. In our community, it is the young boys, under the age of 35, who weigh three and a half pounds fully clothed soaking wet who get the second, third, and fourth eye undress.
This is not a “conservative” student. This is a narrow minded, hateful bigot who, more than likely, has latent homosexual tendencies, if not a flaming queen in the closet, and who would rather create a raunchy scenario replete with debauchery and his wildest fantasy.
rand503
AND they have a voice. Students are represented in their own student government, which allocates the fees. If they don’t like how the money is spent, get involved in student government, and make the changes you want. Of course, you end up learning about compromise and other sticky real world things too, which won’t make them happy either.

What is wrong with everyone? Tackles? Inappropriate? Kids barely get sex ed in school. If we can’t discuss sex openly and intelligently at a university, where are we going to learn about it? Get a grip!

What is “morally questionable” about this event is not the sodomy; it’s the normalization of obesity. Being overweight or obese greatly raises your risk for other health problems:
Coronary Heart Disease
High Blood Pressure
Type 2 Diabetes
Abnormal Blood Fats
Metabolic Syndrome
Cancer
Sleep Apnea Sleep
Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome
Reproductive Problems
Gallstones

Fack reading the article, but what a HOT cutey! O.o <3

@ingyaom:
Look. There’s a difference between being overweight and being obese. In fact, this is more based off of perceptions and judgments from someones body image. You can experience all that regardless of how your body looks. Plenty of the beloved muscle Mary’s drop dead from heart attacks and etc. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Am I missing something? Where do they say this talk is about sex? Call me crazy but it sounds like they’ll discuss fat shaming in the gay community, which is clearly (1) real, and (2) necessary.

It amazes me how many of the comments here are from people who did not bother to read the article and are commenting based entirely on the warped perceptions of the anti-gay activist; as if his idiotic comments are an accurate perception of the content of the seminar! Come on guys!
dwes09
@dwes09: Of course, part of this can be blamed on Queerty’s use of an inaccurate sensational headline.

@ingyaom: Let’s make a deal – you don’t worry about my weight and I won’t worry about your complete lack of compassion you superior sounding twat.
ingyaom
Do the CDC, NIH, WHO, WebMD, etc. also have a “complete lack of compassion”? The message is slim down, not attempt to normalize an epidemic problem.
moldisdelicious
@ingyaom:
It’s clear that you are more disturbed by obesity from the way it makes peoples bodies look than by its associated health problems which are not limited to a number of obese people.
This idea of forcing people to look a certain way due to being socially conditioned on what the ideal body is supposed to look like based on the tastes of a few people in control of the media is counterproductive. This form of manipulation is constantly pushed by the fitness industry to get more people to sign up for the gym and other businesses. Nobody but western countries like the us and the uk make obesity an issue. Why is that? At the same time, there’s an alarming amount of people with eating disorders and etc trying to have the media image of a perfect body. We need less people with your mentality.
DarthKitsune
as a fabulously fluffy man, I think a class on how to give me a good rogering is a must!
ingyaom
@moldisdelicious: I don’t know what part “social conditioning” is supposed to play in this conversation when the CDC says that people who are obese are at increased risk for “all-causes of death (mortality)”. You don’t have to look like an underwear model or go to a gym every day to stay healthy, but you do have to eat right and get some exercise.

According to one of the websites, Carlos Flores “is interested in defending orthodox Catholic and Thomistic thought from both secularism and liberalism.” Sounds like total closet case Catholic queen.

“How To Sodomize Overweight Men” is a label by the conservative folks simply because the event is about the gay community.
gaym50ish
People write books about all kinds of things, and they should all be fair game for discussion in a university setting. Isn’t that what universities are for? Should they refrain from discussing Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” because it’s about an event that is more than just “morally questionable”?
martinbakman
I ‘agree Flores is probably a closet case.
In 20 years he’ll probably be out and proud, and hopefully a nice queen that doesn’t fat shame, and the like.
jaack
Anti-Gay Carlos Flores own words “I don’t think the university should be using my funds to hold a morally questionable event,” he added, “I’d rather they spent someone else’s money.” Who are you to impose your bigoted views on other students? Are your moral views the only “unquestionable” view? The university setting is to expand information that students will encounter in the real world. NOT to limit it to a narrow view of what I consider bogus beliefs expounded in bibles cobbled together in the 5th century. Always there are those who refuse to live and let live. They MUST impose their limited views on the rest of humanity to the detriment of us all. Go to a religious school and surround yourself with similar creatures. You won’t have any morally questionable events until you leave the classroom. An ignorant man ages like an ox. His flesh may increase, but not his understanding.
Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace. Irrespective of whether we are believers or agnostics, whether we believe in God or Karma, everyone can pursue moral ethics.

I am a proud gaucho, and I had no idea this was happening. I might check it out for suits and giggles. If the budding neoconservative wants to take down a massive boondoggle though maybe he should try to shut down Extravaganza, the one day music festival that has featured artists like Snoop Dog, Dada Life, and Kendrick Lamar. I’m sure he’d be real popular then.
Having said that last bit sarcastically I sincerely wish they’d get rid of it. I was lucky and liked the artists for two of my extravaganzas, but they’re still a massive waste of money.
