Costa Rica: No military, excellent coffee, unbeatable beaches. And thanks to this weekend’s election of Laura Chinchilla as the nation’s first female president, there will be no support for gay rights at the executive level.
She’ll pick up where her mentor — the sitting president Oscar Arias and National Liberation Party member — left off. And among the fast-facts being distributed by the media (so outlets like us can quickly spit out an item about the election!), Chincilla is a social conservative opposing gay marriage. The president-elect, meanwhile, is happily married hrself.
Arias, meanwhile, previously designated May 17 as National Day Against Homophobia, but also approved a ban on gays donating blood. Looks like another term of mixed messages.

WTF is with heterosexuals wanting–and DEMANDING–*special* rights?! Why don’t they understand the difference between a CIVIL/ SECULAR marriage and a religious (though in most people’s unfortunate minds, “Christian”) marriage?
Moreover, who the frakk has convinced so many people that Separate-but-(un)equal is good enough for us and, despite global history, is actually *okay*?! Over the past 10 years of study it has been unequivocally disclosed that so-called “Civil Unions” and “Domestic Partnerships” do NOT provide the same legal and societal protections, etc. that marriage does. In fact, most businesses that are supposed to accept CUs and DPs, are not following through with that promise; and no one but gay people actually know what CUs and DPs even are! So, WTF?!?!?! Anyone know who we can blame? The truth of the mater is that CUs and DPs are NOT viewed as “real marriages”, nor do they have (as hetero. society seems to have convinced themselves) all of the rights of marriage without the name!
Why doesn’t the gay community start instituting separate-but-(un)equal to every heterosexual client en mass, to show them that CUs and DPs are really very similar, theoretically-speaking. ;o) Someone HAS to teach the breeders a sorely deserved lesson!

Please check your linked article, it says that Arias removed the ban on gays donating blood.
